This assignment is for Civics Periods 2 and 3.
The weekly assignment consists of five parts:
1) Read the assignments. This week's readings is Public Agenda's Healthcare reading and gives a strong overview of healthcare.
2) Take Cornell Notes on the readings. I will collect these notes on Friday in class.
3) Find another credible source on the internet that connects to the reading above. You can use any of the sites I have listed on the right, or more general news sites like nytimes.com.
4) After you read the source that you find, answer the following questions as a blog entry below:
- Write a summary sentence for the text you found.
- How does the text connect to that week’s topic or to the other text you have read?
- What evidence do you have that the text you found is credible?
- Does the author present strong evidence to support his/her argument? Provide an example.
- Create a short synthesis paragraph on the one of the texts and your text.
Keep in mind that everyone else will see what you write below, so please keep it professional. This post is due Thursday, 11/1, by 5:00pm.
5) Come to class on Friday ready to discuss the reading and the text you found!
If you need support or have questions, my office hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 3:15-4:15 in Room 229.
The article I found was” With Medicaid, Long-Term Care of Elderly Looms as a Rising Cost” by Nina Bernstein. This article talks about how the government is spending a large amount of money on Medicaid for the poor and elderly. They also interview an elderly woman called Rena Lull, 92, who spent the last of her life savings on $250-a-day nursing home care saving it in order to pay for her medical conditions. The article connects to our week’s topic about healthcare because it talks about how Medicaid and Medicare are going to raise due to the baby boomers turning 62 already and getting money from the government called social security. It connects to because they both touch on that the government is spending most of their budgets on Medicare and Medicaid. This text is credible because it has other hyperlinks that relate to the topic of health care, Medicaid, Medicare and Obama vs. Romney’s point of view toward healthcare. Nina Bernstein does present strong evidence to support her argument giving all the support the government can do to the elderly because they don’t have the power to make any money to support themselves. Bernstein states “Overall, 31.5 percent of Medicaid’s $400 billion in shared federal and state spending goes to long-term care for the elderly and the disabled”. This is beneficial for the elderly and the disable because they will get more money to pay for their doctor visits and medicine than paying from their pockets. Nina Bernstein will agree with “A citizens’ solution guide health care “because they both agree on giving the elderly poor and disable people the opportunity to get Medicare and Medicaid no matter the situation they come from. As Nina Bernstein states” No state has a more ambitious plan to overhaul Medicaid than New York, which has the biggest Medicaid budget in the country — $54 billion — and spends about 41 percent of it for long-term care, almost half on nursing homes”. Here she is saying that the government spends most of our federal budgets on Medicaid to provide for those people who really need it. “A Citizens’’ solution guide health care” reads “ people above the age of 65 account for the most health care spending and the amount of health care dollars devoted to older Americans is going to continue to increase steadily”. Here it’s talking how the money going towards health care is going to continue to increase all the way to 2030 due to the baby boomers hitting the age to retirement and starting to collect social security. Medicare and Medicaid are both two big issues the government deals with and is trying to deal with it and make it accessible for everyone and affordable to.
ReplyDeleteThe article "Truth and Lies About Medicare" talks about how the republicans are argueing that the medicare know is to expenceive to purchase and obama is trying but not succeding in making a change. the hyper links present strong evidence to support her argument giving all the support the government can do to the elderly because they don’t have the power to make any money to support themselves. Bernstein states “Overall, 31.5 percent of Medicaid’s $400 billion in shared federal and state spending goes to long-term care for the elderly and the disabled”. This is beneficial for the elderly and the disable because they will get more money to pay for their doctor visits and medicine than paying from their pockets.“A Citizens’’ solution guide health care” reads “ people above the age of 65 account for the most health care spending and the amount of health care dollars devoted to older Americans is going to continue to increase steadily".Medicare and Medicaid are both two big issues the government deals with and is trying to deal with it and make it accessible for everyone and affordable to, some many people need it and cant afford it while other dont need it but can afford it. This shows medicare is a big issue that has to be adress and cant not be ignored.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/18/health/policy/limits-placed-on-immigrants-in-health-care-law.html?pagewanted=all
ReplyDeleteThe following article called “Limits Places on Immigrants in Health Care Law” by Robert Pear is describing the idea of how Barack Obama contradicts ideas from agreeing that young immigrants will have all Medicare cost covered by the government to changing his phrases and stating the opposite. This article clearly connects to this week’s reading because this article explains the reason why healthcare is needed for people, especially for immigrants. Both the article and this week’s reading discuss the importance of healthcare and why it is beneficial for individuals, which explains why everyone is in need of healthcare benefits. This article is credible because it’s published from a famous organization, NY Times, and if false information is ever published by them, then their number of viewers will drastically decrease. The way Robert Pear makes his argument stronger is by using different examples of real-life situations that have occurred to individuals. For instance, Pear states, “Ricardo E. Campos, 23, of Wheaton, Md., an illegal immigrant who came to the United States from El Salvador at the age of 12 … He is attending a community college and said he desperately needs affordable health insurance. After doctors discovered that he had bone cancer, he underwent a 36-hour operation in 2009 and was in a wheelchair for a year”. This demonstrates how an immigrant is in need of the federal government’s benefits, especially after he was diagnosed with bone cancer. Robert Pear also uses statistics to make his argument stronger. For example, Pear states, “The Pew Research Center estimates up to 1.7 million unauthorized immigrants could eventually seek deferrals of deportation under the exercise of executive authority…” Overall, with the help of healthcare services, individuals, especially over 65, can save up lots of money and can be able to pay other expenses that they have pending. Most of them won’t need to worry about healthcare expenses and this is one of the reasons why immigrants should also have the right to be eligible for Medicaid. Immigrants, whether they’re young or old, deserve to be respected as each and every one of the U.S. citizens are respected just for the sake that they are “legal”. Whether individuals are legal or undocumented in the United States, they each have the right to defend their own rights and beliefs and be respected just like other individuals.

ReplyDeleteThe article I found was “Romney,Obama Uphold Health Care Falsehoods.” In fact check this article explains the positive and negative outcomes of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obama-care. Romney stated that this law would cut Medicare by $50 billions ,which would add to our deficit. But according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) this would cut the deficit. This text Connects to the Public Agenda's Healthcare because it emphasizes different approaches on how the government is planning to change Health Care and make sure everyone is covered. These two text are so specifically focused on Health Care. This text is from FactCehck.org a nonpartisan website. This means that the website doesn't pick a political party. This text analyses the Health Care issue by quoting Romney he said the law is a “job-killer.” But CBO says the law would have a “small” impact on jobs, mainly affecting the amount of labor workers choose to supply. It’s also stated that people who receive subsidies, will work less hours because they are paying less for health care. Meaning if you're getting some financial assistance from the government then you don't really need to work long hours because then that assistance will most likely be taken away. The CBO says But the jobs would not be lost or killed. Most of those workers would have the “financial resources” — because of the subsidies provided by the law — to retire or reduce their hours.” But because 79 million baby boomers are turning 65 at the rate of 10,000 a day. means they can retire. As for the other people whose working hours are being reduced they will probably receive some sort of subsidies. Similarly, in Public Agenda's Healthcare, stated in Approach two the employer will provide Health Care. This would include giving tax credits to individuals and the businesses to make their insurance more affordable. On the other hand the government is trying to negotiate a ways in which they can lower cost on Health Care. An as to baby boomers they will receive elderly flexibility on their health care.
ReplyDeleteThe source that chose this week was the website ThanksObamacare.org. In this website, I played the Obamacare Game of Healthcare. This virtual board game places you, an 18 year old adult, in situations which allow you to make certain decisions that we, as teenagers, will make at certain points of our lives. For example, at age 24, I landed in a situation that said I couldn’t find a job. However I was still granted healthcare due to Obamacare policies leaving me under my parents insurance until age 26. At the end of the game, I was able to retire at age 65 and the “the choices [I] made will help to keep [me] happy for many days to come” (Obamacare Game of Healthcare final results). The overall point of the game was to give people a view on how life will be like under Obamacare. The connection between Public Agenda: Health and the Obamacare game is blatantly, the topic of healthcare. Public Agenda discuss the economical stand points of healthcare and the Obamacare game discreetly explains how our money is used in Obamacare by explaining how Obamacare helps us in each step of our lives. This source is credible because it was founded by ProgressNow, which is a progressive advocacy organization founded in 2003. Their mission is to answer conservative propaganda. Both Public Agenda and ThanksObamacare.org can agree on one thing, healthcare is not cheap, which doesn’t allow everyone to have healthcare. “In 2010, the US spent 17.9 percent of the nation’s economy on healthcare…” (Public Agenda: Healthcare). While there are spending all this money on healthcare, still there are “50 million people uninsured…” (Public Agenda: Healthcare). With Obamacare you are insured “...under your parents insurance until you are 26” (Obamacare game). Which allows you more time to get a job, and also gives the government time to grow economically.
ReplyDeleteThe following article that I found is called “Millions still go without insurance if law passes” by the associated press this article is talking about how if state legislators pass a new healthcare law then millions of people would be uninsured and would have to pay to visit the doctor with their own money. Some people argue that they want the Affordable Care Act to be passed because it would increase the number of insured Americans even though insured Americans can face a tax penalty. If this law is passed then undocumented immigrants won’t even be eligible for medicaid. This article is credible because it is from Fox News a huge and famous organization and if it does say something that is false then it would lose it number in viewers. The associated press makes this article stronger is by giving examples of how if this law was to be passed how it would affect American citizens and Undocumented Immigrants. He show this when the associated press says “many legal U.S. residents will go without insurance, too. About 36 percent of the population that remains uninsured will qualify for Medicaid but won't sign up for various reasons”. This show the side of the American citizens the associated press show the side of the undocumented immigrant when they say “Still, millions of illegal immigrants won't qualify for coverage”.The main point about this is that this law can benefit one group of people and hurt the other group. Both the article and the text talk about the good and the bad about how healthcare can benefit some people both the the online text and the article agree that a law should be made that would benefit illegal immigrants and U.S. citizens.
ReplyDeleteThe text I found is about the cost of health care increasing yearly. It was said " that health care spending might begin rising rapidly again." This is a concern to the government because if health care costs keep rising the United States debt will rise too. This connects to this weeks topic because it is also about the cost of healthcare destabilizing our country's economy. There are different methods to reform the healthcare system but we don't know if they would work. This article said that "while healthcare costs are steadily increasing higher cost does not necessarily translate as better quality." There is one plan which is the Affordable Care Act that might help decrease the cost of healthcare. The text I found is credible because it is from a trusted news website. The author supports the argument well because he uses statistics to inform us how healthcare cost is rising. He said "Affordable Care Act has numerous provisions that help rein in costs". This shows that there is a good plan to decrease the cost of healthcare. The text I found is about the cost of healthcare increasing yearly and the class article is about the increasing healthcare cost and what we can do to decrease it. In the class article there are three approaches to reform healthcare. For example moving to government-provided, universal healthcare to make sure everyone gets covered. This will benefit the workers because they are paying more each year. In the article I chose it was said that there are "differences between how much employees are paying for premiums in companies where at least 35 percent of workers earn $24,000 or less a year, compared with how much employees are paying where at least 35 percent of workers earn $55,000 a year." Healthcare costs are affecting workers because they are paying more yearly and are not getting much help. These articles both show how healthcare cost is affecting our economy and how we can change it.

In the article “Health Care Reform: More Young Adults Have Insurance than Last Year, Study Says” by Jeffrey Young explains the effects of President Barack Obamas Affordable Care Act. President Obama signed the act into law in 2010 and in 2011, “an estimate of 3.1 million people under the age of 26 years old gained coverage between September 2010, when the rule took effect, and December 2011”. Before The Affordable Care Act was passed, “the 2010 census revealed that 50 million Americans, or 16 percent of the population, had no health insurance”. This shows that the act has taken effect and has been proving President Obamas idea on healthcare. However, President Obamas running candidate, Governor Mitt Romney, plans to repeal the act when elected as president. This brings controversy to Americans who depend on healthcare due to the high prices of medications. This article connects to this week’s topic on the reading, Public Agenda’s Healthcare, because it talks about the actions taken by President Obama and the fact that the 2012 election is nearby. Also the reading explains Presidents Obamas Affordable Care Act and the actions that were taken, and of course, possible actions that will happen soon. This article is credible because Jeffrey Young is a healthcare reporter at The Huffington Post in Washington.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was passed on March 23, 2010 but the Supreme Court decided to uphold the health care law on June 28, 2012. The Affordable Care Act was enacted to increase the number of Americans covered by health insurance and decrease the cost of health care. The Supreme Court decision of the ACA states that “Beginning in 2012, those who do not comply with the mandate must make a ‘shared responsibility payment’ to the Federal Government”. This explains that Americans who do not have healthcare would have to pay a penalty fee if an individual is not covered by healthcare.
The article I found was “This Election, a Stark Choice in Health Care” and it discusses both candidates ideas on the health care and how if Obama wins millions of more people will have and if Romney wins the number of people having medicaid or medicare will shrink. This text connects to this weeks topic because both discuss how the issue of healthcare will affect the economy and how much of the federal budget it will take up. This source is credible because it is from a well known news organization that many people get information off of for many years now and its known as a trusted organization. The author does present a strong argument from both Obama and Romney’s side and talks about the effects that each health care plan idea will have. The author states “The focus should not be on increasing the number of insured Americans, his advisers say, so much as on controlling health costs by fixing the dysfunctional insurance market.” from Romneys point of view and how is main goal is to help fix the economy of the US. “To help them afford it, the federal government would subsidize private insurance premiums for people with incomes up to four times the federal poverty level ($92,200 for a family of four). And it would expand Medicaid to cover more poor people, including many adults without children.” This quote of from Obama’s point of view and how he is going to expand the health care to even more people and making them more eligable. Both texts connect to each other because they both talk about health care and how its going to affect the economy of the US and talk about different ways we can approach each like for example either expanding it more or making it less available and whether people should have to pay or not.

The article I found " U.S. set to sponsor Health Insurance" by Robert Pear talks about how the "Obama administration will soon take on a new role as the sponsor of at least two nationwide health insurance plans to be operated under contract with the federal government and offered to consumers in every state". This was a health care law and a substitute for a pure government run health insurance program all based on Obama's plan. This connects to this weeks topic on health care because many individuals and their families are losing medicaid and life insurance. This causes them to search for new ones and it's difficult to do that. This source is credible because it's from the NY times and it is a trustful place to find articles to read. Also because the author uses real people that are part of the health care plans. Robert supports his argument by saying "The new health care law stipulates that at least one of the multistate plans must provide insurance without coverage of abortion services. If a plan does cover abortions, it must establish separate accounts, one with money for abortion and one for all other medical services". This shows that most people in the world can't afford health care which involves with medicaid and medicare.
The article which I choose to use is "U.S to Sponser Health Insurance" by Robert Pear. This article discusses how the U.S government plans to take part in the nations health inserucances and plans by forming a contract between the federal government and each state. This article connects to this weeks reading of "Public Agenda's Health Care" because both articles discuss how the the U.S government would benefit heath care and health insurance if they were to step into and become a part of the soulution. The only diffrence between the articles is that "Public Agenda's Health Care" is just showing statistics on the nation's health care over the last few years. Robert Pear's text is credible becuase it was published by the New York Times on October 27, 2012. The New York Times is a well established news print organization that has been around for quite some time now. Rober Pear uses strong evidence to back up his arguemnt when he uses a quote from Walton J. Francis in his article, "“extraordinarily successful” in managing that program, which has more than 200 health plans, including about 20 offered nationwide." This quote backs up Robert Pear's arguement that with the U.S government getting involved in health care it would greatly benefit the American people. Both articles explain how the involvement of the U.S goverment in health care and health insurances would benefit the American people. The governemt can establish and negotiate contracts with states in order to help get each individual the health care they need.
ReplyDeleteThe text that I found is called "Limits Placed on Immigrants in Health Care Law" published by Robert Pear. This article talks about how "young immigrants granted a reprieve from deportation “shall not be eligible” for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program" . This article connects to this weeks topic because it talks about how every citizen deserves to have healthcare and how the president is not allowing immigrants who have became citizens into health care programs. This weeks article and the text I found explain the issue of not having healthcare and the presidents plans toward solving this issue. The text I found is credible because its from a big organization called the New York Times which is known to have reliable sources .
ReplyDeleteRobert Pears uses strong evidence when he states Marielena Hincapié, the executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, an advocacy group for low-income immigrants, said: “We had been working closely with the administration, so we were quite surprised and shocked by the new restrictions on health coverage. This is a shortsighted, reactionary and bad public policy.” This is beneficial and supports his argument because he uses quotes from an executive director who works with people into solving the issue of health coverage. The presidents ideal on health care is an example of America not living up to its egalitarian ideals. Healthcare should be provided to all us citizens and affordable for everyone . The president is not providing healthcare for children immigrants who have been documented. This is not equal because if they are documented and citizens they deserve to be treated as any other Americans.

ReplyDeleteThe article I choose is called "Health Care Debate Focuses On Legal Immigrants", written by Julia Preston. This article has to do with how illegal immigrants are not being count and cant get help with Medicare and Medicaid programs. This article connects to the reading we read is called " A Citizens Solutions Guide Health Care", by Public Agenda. They connect because the first article talks about how illegal and legal immigrants should be helped and get Medicare and health care programs, even thought illegals are not getting the help because they are not residents as quoted,"Democrats broadly agree that illegal immigrants should be excluded but many want all legal permanent residents to be able to participate in proposed health insurance exchanges and receive subsidized coverage if they quality". This article expresses thoughts and opinions on how the author views health care programs. While the second article talks about how its important to individuals and why everyone should need health care for emergency purpose and their benefits. The article I found online is credible because it is located from the New York Times a big newspaper that is strongly trusted. Both article had a really strong argument about health care and programing. How ever they have documented people, citizens and illegal immigrants wanting health care benefits. And how these health care benefits both parties their own health.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-vice-presidential-debate-healthcare-20121011,0,3580285.story
ReplyDeleteThis article involves not the presidents but the vice presidents debating about the healthcare. This was during the vice president debate and this debate included the main topics for this years elections. But one of the main ones was the debate of the healthcare. The article is mentioning what mostly happened that day but as well who had the edge for the argument. Both sides are trying to convince the voters whose plan would be a better choice and that lead to a successful nation.
This is similar to the reading because in the reading explains your basic information of what healthcare is all about. It also mentions two approaches instead of one approach. These approaches are the main idea used by presidents this year that are convincing the voters this year. The reading also mentions what should be done so it would benefit the whole nation and their aren’t any disagreements. The things that the country is doing wrong and comparing to other nations.
This source is credible because it from a very important newspaper company well-known in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Times can’t failed to give the people what they need to know and especially from the presidential race that’s occurring this year. The election is a very important topic that everyone around the nation needs to know and well informed. The author is a credible person because he has worked in many parts of the states and now he’s in Los Angeles. He has also won some awards for his leadership to his writing. A final note about him is that today is his birthday.
The author for this article uses outside information that he knows, he’s not siding with either side but he was mostly siding with the democrat side because he knows who won in that debate. The author also uses what each vice president said and tried to make sense with that. Like Ryan was stating that his plan would help out 50 million of the seniors. Now that’s just estimates and also a total of $716 billion dollars cut. All these numbers are just estimate that can be either correct or wrong. But Ryan was making sure he was getting the people interested in his plan and the candidate that would guarantee that is Romney. But Biden and protects the Obamacare by saying, “We cut the cost of Medicare. We stopped overpaying insurance companies when doctors and hospitals -- the AMA supported what we did. AARP endorsed what we did. And it extends the life of Medicare to 2024. They want to wipe this all out” (LA Times). Biden knows the Obamacare plan is just starting and would require time because everything that is being done to make a better nation takes time.
Overall the article is showing just a summary what happen in the debate and who had an edge towards the election. Healthcare is an important subject that each candidate should talk as well with other issues like the economy and immigration. But healthcare is for the seniors that would need help from the government for so much service towards the nation. Each candidate is giving great ideas but for Ryan we would want to hear more about the plan so it won’t be much of a waste. The democratic is better at explaining at their ideas and the author of the article would included the winner was Biden.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/28/health/us-to-sponsor-health-insurance-plans-nationwide.html?ref=healthinsuranceandmanagedcare
ReplyDeleteThe article I read is “U.S To Sponser Health Insurance” by Robert Pear. I read that the Obama administration will sponser two new nationwide health insurance plans which will work under the federal government power and that competition in state health insurance markets, many of which are dominated by a handful of companies. This is connected to this week topic and also last week topic because it has been seen that from the reading of the “Public Agendas Federal Budget” it shows that healthcare was one of the 5 most important ideals to the United States and shows how the government has an important role. Health care is important because as people get older there going to need it and also goes for retiree and baby bloomers. When i hear the word health care i also think about the workers in job and how they need to be protected. For example “ The personnel agency has earned high marks for its ability to secure good terms for federal workers through negotiation rather than heavy-handed regulation of insurers.” when I read this it makes me think that health care is going to help workers work more longer because there are going to be protected and fully covered if anything happens like better medicane which can help a worker continue working. This source is credible because is coming from the new york times and they wont give false statements and is coming from Walton j. francis author of a consumer guide to health plans for frederal employees. I think the author is agreeing with his statement because he said it will increase competition in health markets. The author agrees because is going to make more workers come and work and be protected to.
The article i found "Where Obama and Romney Stand on the Big Issues" by Gregory J. Krieg,In this article it talking about what both Obama and Romney are going to do if they won the 2012 Elections both Obama and Romney have different ideas for Taxes,Health Care,Medicare,Energy and other thing that could help or not help the people of america this connects to the work that we have done in close for the pass few weeks. this article is Credible because it's from the ABC News which most everyone reads. in the article Gregory may have agreed to what both Obama and Romney have wanted to do in america and how it's going to be in 4 years for the next Elections.

This week the article I choose was called “Single-payer system would save American lives and money”, written By Richard A. Damon, M.D.; this article focuses on how a doctor feels the government should pass a National Single Payer Health Care program to improve the countries
ReplyDeletehealthcare. The article connects to this week’s reading because it specifically explains the actions the government should take in approach one from the reading. The reading expresses what the steps are that the government should take to make healthcare better, and the article explains why it would make America better. The text is credible because, it comes from a site that is ran by doctors and is mentioned a lot in media; it also is connected to a lot of newspapers like the NY times and is well known by many people. The author uses statics as evidence for his article but doesn’t really use anything else. I would say that he didn’t really use any evidence from outside sources to make his argument strong. However the fact that he is a doctor and he wrote the article on a website that is for making healthcare in America more successful makes his argument strong because he knows what he is talking about. The author used his own knowledge to make his argument strong. Doctor Damon’s article shows the positive affects the country will get from the “single payer health program”. As stated by him “The opportunity to pursue good health is a human right. A single-payer system would save both American lives and money.” The single-payer system will not only benefit the country’s health system but will also save money for the country. That would be very good for the country because everyone will be backed up by health insurance and the country would be able to start fixing the economic state in which we are in. It would also benefit the country because by it would limit the amount of people who die every year due to health issues.
The New York Times article I researched “What we Give Up For Health Care” by Ezekiel J. Emanuel is about the things that have to be changed in order for health care to remain available for the people that are in need of it.”A Citizens solutions guide Health Care” page # 2-3 connects to the article the I researched because both articles talk about the expenses of health care and the changes that must be done to be able to maintain healthcare available. “When premiums doubled between 2000 and 2009, the percentage of Americans who were covered by employer-sponsored health insurance dropped to 61 percent from 69 percent.” This demonstrates that insurance for the public decreased. The text “What we Give Up For Health Care” by Ezekiel J. Emanuel is credible because it is an official article from the famous news feed New York times . Ezekiel J. Emanuel does support hi argument with strong evidence and this is shown because he uses statistics to support his argument. Overall both articles provide knowledge to better the understanding of how health care works and why it changes its status.

1. The text I found is call "Health care law excludes undocumented immigrants ACA is available to legal immigrants and citizens in mixed-status families", Elizabeth Aguilera talks about how the Affordable Care Act can impact immigrants, both undocumented and lawful immigrants. The Affordable Care Act can excludes undocumented immigrants, including undocumented children, from the health-exchange component and from Medicaid. This means that everyone will be required to prove citizenship or immigration status to receive non-emergency health care in certain circumstances. A benefited is that undocumented immigrants include can get additional funding for community-based medical clinics that often serve those who cannot afford other care, both citizens and immigrants, both legal and undocumented.
ReplyDelete2. The article "Health care law excludes undocumented immigrants ACA is available to legal immigrants and citizens in mixed-status families" is connected to this week reading because they both explains what are going to be some impacts about health care. In the article "A Citizens solution Guide Health Care" it talks about some much is the Health Care problems that is going to affect everyone and in the article I found talks about one of those groups.
3. The website I got my article form is U-T San Diego. This website provides everything you need to advertise in San Diego. Under each menu, explore the wide variety of products you can use to reach San Diegans on paper, online, or on their doorsteps. This help people to get a better sense of our audience, we’ve included stats for the San Diego market in each category print, online and direct mail. It also content, information, reports, images, features (including, but not limited to RSS, API, software and other downloads), products and data, as well as any mobile sites and applications of U-T San Diego.
4. The author form this article, Elizabeth Aguilera give you important evidence because when she stated her article she said "I checked in with the National Immigration Law Center to clarify if and how this decision might impact immigrants, both undocumented and lawful immigrants", National Immigration Law Center is the only national legal advocacy organization in the U.S. exclusively dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of low-income immigrants and their families. This shows that the author check with other sources to support her details. The author also give examples about her explanations for people that were confuse.
5. In my article the author, Elizabeth Aguilera explains how immigrants are going to be affected my the health care. But she also gives benefits about the health care. In the article of the week tells us about how much is the health care, it takes 20 percent of the federal budget. It also explains how our health care is higher than 33 other countries because of our technology.

The article that am reading is about health care reform which is mostly about The Affordable Care Act also know as Obama care which will help low and middle americans get more support on health care and will also help lower the deficit by $138 billion over a decade. This text connects to the text i am reading about which is about health care it connects to the text because it talks about how health care is having a major impact on the deficit. It also connects because it talks about how they could help people so they could get health care enough support that will help them pay for there medical bills and wont have to take that much money out of there pockets which is Obama are. This text is credible because it comes from the new york times which is one of the highly source of news for new yorkers also because this topic has other hyper links that relate to Obama health care plan and that also relate to the deficit. The author of my article does show strong evidence by providing strong statistics for example when he says "which has also estimated that it will reduce the federal deficit by $138 billion over a decade". This shows that he provided the number of money that Obamacare would lower the deficit by.
ReplyDeleteThese two articles relate to each other because they speak of the same idea which is health care and talk about healthcare . They also have the same ideas on how to reduce the deficit by using Obamacare while also supporting Americans and helping them pay for there medical bills. It also talks about the opposite side which is the negative things that will happen because of obamacare like not all Americans will get full support and how through out the years the cost of healthcare is raising because of baby boomers

ReplyDeleteThe article I chose for this weeks blog post is called " Americans Without Health Insurance Decline, Census Says " written by Alex Wayne. In This article Wayne reports on the decreasing numbers of Americans uninsured. One possible explanation of the recent decrease is because of the Affordable Care Act that allow young adults to remain in their parents plan until the age of 26.This reminds me of the conversation we had of the start of the unit, when we watch the video on what the Affordable Care Act would bring to America and it sounds like approach one and a bit of two in the booklet that Public Agenda made on Healthcare. The article I chose is a creditable source,Bloomberg L.P. is a mass media cooperation and is known all around the world. The writer Alex Wayne is a graduate in Journalism in the University of Florida.

The article I have selected is actually a video “Ad Takes Aim at Obama Health Overhaul” by Gerry Mullany who discusses the issue of why the Obama Care system should not be continued in the United States. Mullany says, “President Obama’s health care over haul would leave the United States with a system much like Canada’s, one in which costly delays in treatments would threaten people’s lives.” (Mullany, 2012) This relates to the article posted on the blog, “Public Agenda’s Health Care” by Public Agenda. In the “President Agenda”, there are arguments on weather the Obama Care should continue. Both “Ad Takes Aim Obama Health Overhaul” and “Public Agenda’s Health Care” are sources that argue weather the Barack Obama is taking the right actions for the citizens. The source I have selected is a credible source, although it is from a partisan’s point of view and propaganda from the Republican Party stated on The New York Times. The New York Times is a reliable website because it is known nationwide and it would loose credibility and publicity if it posts false information. Debating on weather the Obama Care is necessary is a topic that needs further statistics from nonpartisans, because it is still not accurate enough to show if it has and will give more or less positive impacts on residents.

The "Citizens Solution Guide healthcare " text that was presented to us was mainly about the means of healthcare and the impact that it has on the United States economy .The credible source that I found was from the Highly visited website, the New York Times. "Health Care Shares of U.S Economy Rose at Record Rate" by Katherine Q. Seelye is a post that introduces how the Health care problem is eating up the majority of the family budget, this meaning that healthcare is the main thing that we worry about. As the text later stresses that "This represents the biggest one-year expansion of health care’s share of the economy since the federal government began keeping records in 1960." HealthCare is a big problem in this economy.

The New York Times article “Settlement Eases Rules for Some Medicare Patients” is about a plan that the Obama administration has on medicare and its patients. Everyone with chronic disability would find it easier to receive Medicare, even if they don't show no change towards improvement. Both the text in class and the text from the New York Times are about health care. Also about some problems that are and have been presented with the health care system. This text is credible because the New York Times is a well known newspaper that will lose numerous supporters is they lie. The way that Robert Pear supports his argument is by using sources such as Judith A. Stein, director of the nonprofit Center for Medicare Advocacy and Dr. Lynn Greber, director of the Center for study of Chronic Illnesses and Disability at George Mason University in Virginia. Even if health care helps sick people it is still a system with a lot of holes that need to be fixed or just reconstructed. Robert Pear says “ Tens of thousands of people with chronic conditions and disabilities may find it easier to qualify for Medicare coverage of potentially costly home health care,” The health care system tends to let go of people that have long term or life disabilities. With what the Obama administration is trying to do is to make sure that the elderly with long term disabilities are covered. Public Agenda wrote “Whether one agrees with it or not, the ACA aimed to tackle part of our health care problem, providing access for many populations of uninsured Americans.” The Health Care system has many errores that the government has to fix but the ACA, also known as the Obamacare is fixing some of those mistakes.
ReplyDeleteThe article I choose for this week’s blog post is called “Presidential Debate Prep: understanding Obamacare’s $716 Billion in Cuts to Medicare” which was published on October 16, 2012 by Bob Moffitt and Alyene Senger. This article talks about Obamacare’s cut (modifications of medicare’s complex payment formulas) made throughout the bulk of the Medicare programs. The Medicare cuts has decreased Medicare spending by an estimated $716 billion. They’ve been using the money from hospital services, Medicare Advantages, skilled nursing services, hospice services, and other Medicare services. Obamacare doesn't necessarily cover the gap of drug benefit for seniors but it’s separated from the $716 billion. The cost will be shared with the government to fill the “donut hole” (coverage gap in the medicare prescription drug benefit )to help the economy. The ratio cuts to increase benefits are 15:1, with this the seniors will feel and see the impact of Obamacare’s cut. The Obamacare is a long term program that will last for future generations. In the reading from this week it talks about some issues dealing with healthcare and the country’s economy. One of those problems are the over 50 million people didn’t have healthcare coverage in 2010. They also state some reform proposals and the difference among a numerous of them. One reform mention is the ACA ( Affordable Care Act ) provided access for many uninsured Americans. This week’s article states the problems and the reforms but they don’t really talk about solutions. The article I picked out states some next steps to the problems stated in this week’s article. One of those next steps is that Obama will pay for other new programs created under the law to improve the economy and what the medicare provides. And Obama also stated that instead of focusing on the gap he will focus on beneficiaries sharing with the government with the burden of filling the “donut hole”. The article shows credible because it’s from a well-known website and there’s links to click on that expands and provides you with more examples and evidence towards this topic. This article also shows a lot of statistics and it’s from a partisan website. The authors main point from the article is to end the popular confusion regarding the $716 billion in saving Obamacare’s Medicare payment cuts. I believe that author has supported this argument very well. They stated, which parts of medicare will obama cut- which were hospital services, Medicare Advantages, skilled nursing services, hospice services and other Medicare services. They also stated where does the money go- which is to programs to pay new spending in obamacare. They have also stated “putting Obamacare’s Cuts in Context which was the long term plan for the future generations. These are some of the many evidence stated supporting the argument.
ReplyDeleteThe article “A Citizens Solution Guide- Health Care” provides clear examples of how healthcare or medical treatment are threaten to destabilize the country’s economy. “Furthermore, while health care costs, are steadily increasing, higher cost doesn’t necessarily translate as better quality, and some providers are actually able to offer higher-quality care while reducing cost”.This quote clearly provides evidence between the struggle of high quality health care in a low price. In “Presidential Debate Prep: Understanding Obamacare’s $716 Billion in Cuts to Medicare” proves the confusion regarding the $716 Billion in savings from Obamacare. “In Obamacare, the payment cuts are across the broad cuts made throughout the bulk of the Medicare program”. The article from the other text would agree with this system of the saving of Obamacare because it would help the economy. If they work on saving money that means that using that money they can pay off the debts they have as a nation. Which means they can invest more in the people’s healthcare and improving the economy.
The article I’m choosing this week is called “Limits places on immigrants in health care law “By Robert Pear, published by the new York times. The article talks about how young immigrants that are going to be granted the permission to stay in the United States without the fear of being deported would not be granted with health insurance. Immigration over all is a very controversial issue and now that these young immigrants are going to get the right to stay they wouldn’t be granted with health insurance. They would be able to pay taxes but would not be granted with health insurance.
ReplyDeleteThis text relates to the Reading we did this week by “public agenda” a nonpartisan source. This week’s reading talks about healthcare. It talks about facts on health care and how health care Is a very hot topic for this year’s elections. Also in my article they speak about health insurance and immigration. To very important topics that would for sure make a difference in the way people vote this election. As we learn in other public agenda readings health care is a big part of the deficit. Many American argue that immigrants shouldn't get health care because they don’t pay taxes and because they don’t belong here. So if these young immigrants get the right to stay shouldn't they get all the benefits since they are going to be paying for taxes? That’s how I could relate this week’s reading to my article from an outside source.
The article that I found is reliable because it was published by the New York Times. The New York Times is a very well known news source. It also has direct links to other New York Times articles and news. The author has been known to write many of the New York Times articles. The website even allows you to email the author. This is proof that the article I choose is from a reliable source.
The author also uses evidence to back up his argument an example of this would be using real people to back it up. He interview young immigrants and he quoted them. Also he used stats and numbers. An example of this would be when he says “expected to average $5,300 a year for each person subsidized in 2014, and the cost is expected to raise to $7,500 a person in 2022” the author also quoted important people such as the congressional budget.
The article, "FactChecking Health Insurance Premiums" is a out each candidates side has a plan on health care and how that plan would affect the people. This article gives a summary and a analyzation of what health insurance premiums do for the employer sponsored families. Both FactChecking Health Insurance Premiums" and "Public Agenda's Health Care" discuss how the changes in healthcare that employer sponsored families might have to face. "FactChecking Health Insurance Premiums"connects to this weeks topic of health care because the article talks about the percentages of average premium costs over a span of four years, the article also states how republicans say that premiums will go up while Barack Obama says they will go down and even though Obama is fighting for annual premium costs to decrease slowly they are increasing. This source is credible because it has graphs showing the annual growth in employer-based insurance premiums over a span of 11 years. Factcheck.org also went back and updated their information to make the article more accurate using updated news and percentages. Another reason why this source is credible is because the article has a works cited page, the author quoted sources like the U.S Senate Republican Policy Committee, U.S Department of Health and Human Services and House Energy and Commerce Committee. The author quotes people who want the premium price to go down and people who want the premium price to go up, but even being a bi-partisan author she still shows what side shes really on by saying " Out-of-pocket costs, however, could decrease for some, depending on their use of such provisions. But the impact on families' bottom lines would vary widely, depending on the plan, what provisions it did or did not have on the law, and how much a family used any added benefits...For now, what happens to health care spending and premiums in the future is an educated guessing game". "FactChecking Health Insurance Premiums" discusses how the annual premium for employer sponsored families have increased and decreased over time and what will be done if either side is elected. While Obama wants premiums to decrease, the opponent wants them to increase. "Public Agenda partially agrees with Obama by saying "Workers, freed from having to stay at dead-end jobs solely for the health-care benefits, would have greater freedom to start businesses...".

The article i chose is “This Election, a Stark Choice in Health Care” by Abby Goodnough and Robert Pear. This article talks about the different presidential candidates health care policies and their effects on hospitals. If Romney were to win the election, the president’s goal of achieving near-universal coverage could take a backseat to Mr. Romney’s top priority, controlling medical costs. If President Obama were to be re elected, the president’s signature health care law — including the contentious requirement that most Americans obtain health insurance or pay a tax penalty — will almost certainly come into full force. This article is relevant to the class discussion as both revolve around the fiscal policy of health care and how health care affects the economy and the federal budget. This article is credible because it is from the New York Times, an american newspaper founded in 1851 and now receives over 30 million viewers a month on their website.(Wikipedia) Anything published on this prestigious news source is bound to be credible and accurate. The author uses specific evidence to show the advantages. disadvantages, economic results of each health care plan. If Obama wins the election, The result, according to the Congressional Budget Office, is that 30 million uninsured people will eventually gain coverage. If Romney wins the election,”his focus should not be on increasing the number of insured Americans, his advisers say, so much as on controlling health costs by fixing the dysfunctional insurance market.” The class reading and this article are connected by the idea of healthcare. In class we read about the issues with the healthcare and how important it is for america and this article gives solutions and possible approaches to the issues. The class outlined the problem while the reading outlines the solutions to the issue: Healthcare

Secretary Kathleen Sebelius article “Health Care Law 3rd Anniversary: Paying for Quality Saves Health Care Dollars” discuses the changes the Affordable Care Act that was passed which is goal is to improve the type of health care people are getting, having a lower cost on the government. This new Act is trying to make america focus on quantity not quality. This will fix part of the deficit that medicare is causing. This text connects to this week’s article of “A Citizens Solution Guide Health Care” on health care because the government here is also trying to figure out a way to also focus on quantity not quality and how to lower the deficit. The solution guide also connects to Kathleen’s article because that are both trying it find a way to help the deficit of the United States without cutting people off that really need it. This source is found credible because it come from a website called the white house. Theses are all the major stories the United states is focused in and the the problems the president is facing and trying to fix. Kathleen Sebelius is the 21st secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services that has been trying to enhance America's health since she started in the office. “Every year, about 2.6 million seniors – or nearly one in five hospitalized Medicare enrollees – are readmitted within 30 days of discharge, at a cost of more than $26 billion to the Medicare program”, with the Affordable Care act theses billions of dollars are lowering because theses patients were back in the hospital for preventable reasons. The Affordable Care act is also putting insurance companies accountable. Now “even when an insurer decides to increase rates, consumers are seeing lower rate increases than what the insurers initially requested. More than half of the rate requests for 10% or more ultimately resulted in customers receiving either a lower rate increase than requested or no hike at all”. The Affordable Health care plan is trying to make everything possible in order for lower income individuals get high quality health care at a lower price but the government to still be able to lower the deficit in the process of giving more quality than quantity. The united states deficit has been growing since 2008. The Affordable health care is a clear example of the United States trying to fix the deficit without leaving people without medicare and medicaid. Kathleen Sebelius cities a source that demonstrates “ health care price inflation in January dropped to 1.5 percent, one of the smallest increases on record” therefore they are making progress in decreasing the gap of the deficit still satisfying the citizens under these safety nets.
