This assignment is for Civics, Period 2 and Period 3.

The weekly assignment consists of five parts:

1) Read the assignment. This week's reading is from We The People, Chapter 37. You can find it here. If you want to print it out, you can after school.

2) Take Cornell Notes on the reading. I will collect these notes on Friday in class.

3) Find another credible source on the internet that connects to the reading above or to the class topic from this week ("Is America living up to our ideals?"). You can use any of the sites I have listed on the right, or more general news sites like nytimes.com.

4) After you read the source that you find, answer the following questions as a blog entry below:
  • Write a summary sentence for the text you found.
  • How does the text connect to that week’s topic or to the other text you have read?
  • What evidence do you have that the text you found is credible?
  • Does the author present strong evidence to support his/her argument? Provide an example.
  • Create a short synthesis paragraph connecting the class reading and your text.
Keep in mind that everyone else will see what you write below, so please keep it professional. This post is due Thursday, 10/11, by 5:00pm.

5) Come to class on Friday ready to discuss the reading and the text you found!

If you need support or have questions, my office hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 3:15-4:15 in Room 229.

  1. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/scout-sends-eagle-badge-gay-teen-article-1.1179351

The article that i found is by Rheana Murray from the New York Daily news. This article is talking about a Dentist who gave up his medal to a young Boy Scout because the young Boy Scot was denied a Eagle Rank medal because the simple fact that he was homosexual.
This text connects to the idea of Individualism and equality. The decision of not giving the the young boy scot an eagle medal award because he was gay is against violates the idea of equality and individualism. Individualism is the american ideal that everyone has the right to be who they want. And Equality meaning we are all equal under god. This violates individualism and equality because they are not giving the young boy scout the right to be an official Boy Scout because he is gay , also the fact they try to degrade of him of feeling like less of a Boy Scout or human for the fact that he is homosexual. Also the fact that Boy Scout Programs are known to deny giving a Boy Scout a medal if they are openly gay, and no one has chose to act upon it.
The author provides relevant evidence to prove her point. In the article she states a quote from the young scout , “It was by far the biggest goal of my life,“It’s totally devastating.” said from the young scout boy. This violates equality because it has made the teen feel like he less than the rest of the young scouts, which relates to individualism as well because it does allow the young scout to see his value in the world.
This text is credible because The author is known for having articles similar to this one that can some way be related to american ideals, beliefs, and amendments. It is also from the New York Daily News which is a newspaper buisness that not only focus on problems in New York but problems around the world since they acknowledge New York’s diversity in nationality.
Voter ID laws is an excellent example of how America is not living up to its equality ideas. Trymaine Lee states that African Americans,Latinos, and Asians are less likely to own a valid government issued ID. If these voter ID laws were passed according to the Brennan Center For Justice at New York University “ between 170,00 and 475,00 young black voters; 68,000 and 250,000 young hispanic voters;13,000 and 46;000 young Asian-American voters; 1,700 and 6,400 young native Americans voters and 700 and 2,100 young pacific islanders voters could be denied the right to vote or turned away at the polls for not having the proper credentials”.Many of these minorities are most likely to vote for Democrats or Obama, it would make sense that Republicans would want to pass these laws because that would mean less votes for Democrats and more votes for Republicans giving them the higher chance of winning without having to spend a bigger budget on the presidential campaign. Fortunately these Voter ID laws were able to get denied due to threats of being taken to court for discrimination , minorities right are protected.

  2. In the article “Most Say Homosexuality Should Be Accepted By Society” from Pew Research Center Publications talked about the change in peoples opinion on homosexuality. This research shows how in the recent years people have changed their minds from opposing homosexuality to being more accepting and in favor of homosexuality from past years. In this case America proves to be living up to its ideals because it exemplifies the ideology of equality. In the article it says “While the public is divided over same-sex marriage, a majority of Americans (58%) say that homosexuality should be accepted, rather than discouraged, by society.” The author gives data of the change of opinion on homosexuality throughout the year through polls and data. This article is a credible source because the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press is an independent, non-partisan public opinion. The Center conducts regular monthly polls on politics and major policy issues as well as the News Interest Index, a weekly survey aimed at gauging the public’s interest in and reaction to major news events on research organization that studies attitudes toward politics, the press and public policy issues.

  3. The article that I have found is “Fixing the immigration system for America’s 21st century economy” by Barrack Obama. This article talks about how Obama is trying to stop removing of the threat of deportation for young people who came to the U.S. as children and are low enforcement priorities. He also states his future goals to meet the people’s standards and have the immigration system running right. This idea connects to the idea of immigration and the population of immigrates coming to live in America connecting to the reading of the week based on immigration and Americas challenges facing in the future. This article is credible because it comes straight from the White House, has other hyperlinks and the White House is a very know place where they won’t lie. I do think Obama sets a good argument about resolving immigration problems because he thinks everyone should have the right to come to America and pursuit there dream. As he stated “—the idea that each of us deserves the chance to shape our own destiny. That’s why centuries of pioneers and immigrants have risked everything to come here…The future is ours to win. But to get there, we cannot stand still” (Obama). He thinks that if the immigrates and pioneer’s left everything behind to accomplish something here in the United States so should immigrates that want a better life style because it’s not going to just be handed to them. Many immigrants that come to America do suffer a lot to get where they are now and should be appreciated. Obamas speech is a clear example of him fixing the broken immigration system and immigration policy. “We the people” will agree with Obama because it also talks about how much immigrates will be in America in 2050. 24% of the population will be Hispanic, 15% African American, 8% Asian and the Native American population will double, reaching approximately four million. Making the immigration law to work. Although immigrants will be entering the United States the immigration laws will already be settled and in effect so the immigrants will have less trouble. These two articles connect because in Obama’s speech he talks about giving the immigrants equal rights and the new immigration law, it relates to the topic of the chapter “we the people” because it shows the percentage of immigrants coming to America due to its advance technology and job opportunities coming up in the future. Sooner or later the United States is going to be full of immigrates as you can see today there are many Hispanics, African American and Asians in the United States already.

The article I choose is “Romney debate attack on green energy, says Obama picks ‘losers “ written by Ben Wolfgang , This article is about how Mitt Romney “attacked” President Barack Obama on the energy sector he choose were “losers” which is having wind turbine as an energy sources and should use other energy like fossil fuels also natural gas and coal which lead to fighting of which was a better Energy sources President Obama to Romney about the cost of $ 2.8 million on an annual subsidies for oil and gas companies but Romney that told Obama about the $9 million on $90 billion directed at wind, solar and other renewable-energy do to Obama Project green energy . This article is credible because it’s from the Washington Times which is one of the most trusted newspapers the author of this article give what both the President Barack Obama said and his opponent Mitt Romney during the 2012 Presidential Debate that happen on October 3 2012.this article is Relevant because it was one of the topics that we talk about in class talking about which is better between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to see which this the best to became President .If Ben Wolfgang was in class he would agree on which of both man could be better to become President Obama or Romney .http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/oct/4/debate-on-green-energy-losers-vs-fossil-fuels-heat/?page=all

  5. The article I read was called "Non citizens Sue Over U.S. Gay Marriage Ban" by Julia Preston. In the article it is revealed that Same sex marriages are a huge controversy in American not only that but so is immigration. Heather and Maria are women who married but are suing because they keep getting denied their legal residence application due to the fact that they are both gay and do not have their green card. Heather states “I’m very proud of this country, I don’t want to feel like I have to leave here in order to be with the person I love. I shouldn’t have to choose.” This is one strong example of America not living up to our human ideals of equality and liberty. Heather and Maria are being given the choice to be deported or to exile to their life in a foreign country. This violates the right of equality because the sex of a person does not define the choice to be considered a citizen in America. I believe homosexuality is being pushed to the side as a minor problem when in fact though marriage has been legalized it does not mean the torment and conflict is over for the homosexuals in America. They are often misread and treated foul due to te fact tradition is such a strong resolution in America. Heather then strongly says “But we live every day with the uncertainty that we will be separated because the government didn’t recognize that we are a family,” this reveals that homosexuals and immigrants cant live their lives freely without worrying that the government will not support their lifestyle or the way they choose to live. Immigration is such a huge problem in America because our government believes we must be citizens in order to speak our opinions but doesn’t that abuse our equality? Though Americans and immigrants are from different locations does that mean immigrants have to be forced to transform themselves because of our government? So what if they are not American does that mean they do not have the same equal treatment as someone who is not? America is not living up to our ideals in many different ways. Immigrants and homosexuals are often discouraged because they are not seen equal in government. It is not a fair way to live life simply because one individual lives in America and works in America but does not have their green card does that not mean the person deserves a little gratitude. America is not living up to the ideals of many individuals who live here because they often do not seek to help those who have to forcibly change their lives because they are not “Americans” Preston provides several forms of evidence she uses quotes dates and several other forms of evidence. This connects to our class topic because we are learning about American ideals such as individualism , equality, etc. This text is credible because it is from the New York Times therefore it is read by many Americans in America because it is a large organization that will not jeopardize its company with false stories or articles. The author Julia Preston also provides several forms of quotes from the victims she also uses dates. This article connects to the reading because it involves immigration which was a huge problem in America before and is still an on going problem today.

  6. The article I choice was " Laws steer immigrants from starting U.S business , study finds" by Rosa Ramirez. This article talks about how the new laws that the American government is making are pushing away the bright and hard working men and womens who are immigrants. This article also talks about how even thought immigrants are not suppose to be here there the reason why the economy rises because of there companies and the amount of worker or are employed contribute. If America would like to stay to a good point in economic crisis they should leave these immigrants to start there businesses with out no problem they really helping America instead of affecting America. This situation is an example of American not living up too its private property ideal because the government is creating laws that are pushing away immigrants which is an example of the voter ID laws where immigrants has to show documents they dont have to have the right to vote there representer. This article is credible because the author updates the article with hard facts such as datas that shows the affectness of what the immigrant people have contribute to the American economic society. This article is also credible because it has a hotline in which you can call to ask any questions or ways to contact them by email , etc. Author such as Vivek Wadhwa stated " let them come and start their company and employ American workers". Which is a pretty smart thing to do if you want to keep American's economic crisis above from a depression. Datas dont lie as immigrants indeed has contribute to American economy as immigrants led businesses have generated $63 billion in sales since 2006 and have hired 560,000 employees". This shows how much of a impact immigrants has done to America society. This two articles connect because , both articles are looking at the mind set of how American would be with immigrants and the article from Rosa Ramirez is supporting the immigrants in staying in American with number statitic because in theory they are helping America in a way. The author from "We the people" would probably use Rosa's article as credibility because it has data facts of what American soluction in the future holds with the help of immigrants. Rosa Ramirez might use the constitutional convention of 1787 to protect the immigrants rights in staying in American which the convention states that "giving everyonr the opportunity to speak and no one the opportunity to dominate debate". In which case immigrants has the right to speak there mind in how they feel about these laws pushing them away and protecting there property in which they created to help the growth of America economic situation

  8. In the Article “Obama to Permit Young Migrants to Remain in U.S.”. The authors Preston and Cushman talk about president Obama explain how kids that come to the united States will be able to go assist school without fear of deportation and able to work. This text connects to the week's topic because in the “ We the People; Chapter 37” Sandel explains how the population will exceed four hundred million. This text is credible because is from the New York Times an Internationally well known newspaper. Also the author Julia Preston was a member of The New York Times team that won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for reporting on international affairs for its series that profiled the corrosive effects of drug corruption in Mexico. John H. Cushman Jr. the second author, does the economic blog for the New York Times everyday. The authors of this text use strong evidence by citing the president Obama. For Example“a temporary stop gap measure” that would “lift the shadow of deportation from these young people.” This statement was said by the president who's currently trying to make sure immigrant kids get and education. Hes not only trying to make it fair but just for society. This idea of President Obama trying to make it just also is shown in the text of “ We the People” when author Sandel stated that “ American is known for balancing the benefits of a diverse society”(Sandel). This is because the American government tries to spend more on human services, such as medicare and medicaid. According to preston and Cushman “ the broad policy change, which could temporarily benefit more than 800,000 young people”. This can lead to Sandels theory of “ Americans becoming too dependant on government”. This is because the the government takes a lot of charge in making sure their living to up to their egalitarian ideal. Even though the president is trying to help the immigrants this is “not granting any permanent legal status, clears the way for young illegal immigrants to come out of the shadows, work legally and obtain driver’s licenses and many other documents they have lacked”(Cushman, Preston). This connects to “We the people” because once people can't do something about a problem they turn to the government right way. Sometimes is the right thing to do but sometimes people should use their rights that were given in the Constitution.

The text i chose is called "America, land of the Equals" by Chrytsia Freeland. This article is about how the united states started being the most equal country in the world in it's early days, but now we are the least equal country in the world in terms of income. Opposite of when united states started,Freeland states"Compared to any other country from which we have data,America in that era was more equal. Today, the Americans are the outliers in the other direction.”Opposite of when most people were laborers and earned about the same capital. This relates to the topic of america not living up to its founding ideals. These two topics connect because my article shows how america has become less equal in terms of income and the class topic has been how america has not been living to its egalitarian ideals. This article i researched is credible because it is from the NY times, a widely-referenced news source known for correct information and being widely trusted around the world. a connection between my text and the class is that my article is an example that proves the argument made in class. Class topic was that america is not living to its egalitarian ideals and my article proved this with the example of income.

  10. The article I choose this week is called “This Election, a Stark Choice in Health Care” by Abby Goodnough and Robert Pear. This article has to do with this coming up election in November depending on who may win this election depends on the choice of Americans being able to have Medicaid,or Medicare. Also states if Romney wins the election his going to limit medicare and medicare. This connects to the article we are reading in class called “We The People” chapter 37. These articles connects because they both speak about the struggles America has gone though like the struggles of immigration ,medicaid vs medicare, welfare and other. The article “This Election a Stark Choice in Health Care “a a credible source because it was written by Abby Goodnough and Robert Pear two journalist that work for a large company such as the New York Times which a lot of people depend on to get their new about worldwide issues. Goodnough and Pear bring strong evidence of both candidates and their side of medicare and medicaid. This is shown when Goodnough and Pear state that if Romney wins the election he will “ Mr. Romney he would take away Medicare’s “guaranteed benefits “. But if Obama gets re elected “he would carry out the health care law and To help them afford it, the federal government would subsidize private insurance premiums for people with incomes up to four times the federal poverty level ($92,200 for a family of four). And it would expand Medicaid to cover more poor people, including many adults without children”.These quotes are considered strong evidence because they bring statistics and things expects have said and even the own candidates have stated.

  11. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/29/health/policy/hard-to-grin-while-bearing-cuts-in-medicaid-dental-coverage.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

The interesting and most shocking text I found was based on the Medicaid program cutting out dental, vision and drug benefits and because of this, adults are suffering more with their health. This connects to this week’s following topic which is “Is America living up to our ideals?” because this text clearly states that the Medicaid program is abusing our egalitarian ideals. Our egalitarian ideals must always be protected and we individuals who can’t afford the money that we are obliged to pay when we are being assisted in a clinic, dental or vision care, or hospital must be offered some type of benefit from the government. Regardless of our ages and whether we’re poor or not, we must be receiving help from the government because we should all be treated equally. This text is credible because it comes directly from nytimes.com, which is a source from where all texts are believed to be completely true. If they ever publish false information, they would lose lots of viewers that read their articles online and the people who actually buy the newspaper that are really interested in their informative details. In other words, they would look forward to view the number of their population of viewers decrease drastically. The author of this article, Abby Goodnough, provides various evidences to support her argument by using as much statistics as possible and also providing data that this situation has been happening in other states. For example, Goodnough states, “Illinois became the latest state to drastically cut dental benefits last month, when Gov. Pat Quinn, a Democrat, cut $1.6 billion out of its $15 billion Medicaid budget, reducing adult dental coverage to emergency tooth extractions”. This demonstrates how the issue with the Medicaid program has been drastically affecting people from other states. Therefore, this is the way to make an argument stronger than what it is; by providing other facts from other states and other places in the world. Although the class text and the article shown above contradict their sayings, they both have a connection based on healthcare services. Clearly, the article states that the Medicaid program are planning to cut off the health benefits for adults, but the class text are hoping that by 2050, “Medical advances will help Americans live longer. At least one in four Americans will be over the age of sixty-five” (278). By the information Abby Goodnough is providing us with, unfortunately the goal that the U.S. Census Bureau is trying to achieve by 2050 will not happen if the Medicaid program will definitely approve the idea of cutting out the healthcare benefits for adults. By 2050, what the Medicaid program is looking for is for more adults to die at a young age, which is unacceptable because we all deserve to live for a very long time. We should always be treated equally and have the right to defend our rights and what we believe in.

  12. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/26/us/considering-arizona-immigration-law-justices-are-again-in-political-storm.html?pagewanted=all

The article that i read is about how Arizona is making laws to go against immigrants. The law is that any person to be suspected to be in the United States illegally they could be stopped and ask if they have papers. The article talks about how they are trying to show that the law is unconstitutional and going against the equality of the people. The topic relates to equality because when removing people from the country by just asking for their papers on the streets is unconstitutional and also by the law passed it caused arizona to lose a lot of money for their state. I go this article from the new york times which is one of the most selling newspaper in new york with information about thing going on in the world. The author of my text shows and proves his argument by providing court case on the Arizona law and showing the argument that is unconstitutional. America is not living up to its idea of equality by passing a state law in Arizona. This law is unconstitutional because it goes against the rights of the immigrants in Arizona. Also by passing the law it will lower the income of the state which it already did because immigrants play a big role in today's economy. Also immigrants are scared to walk around the streets of Arizona without thinking the fact that they could get deported back to their home country and that they won't be able to follow the American dream. This law also impacted many families in Arizona because parents were deported while their kids stayed in Arizona because they were not immigrants.

  13. The Article that I found was “Unequal Education Federal Loophole Enables Lower Spending on Students of Color” By Ary Spatig-Amerikaner . This article is about how mainly about how the loophole have been found that shows that kids of color are getting unequal education this is basically going against the 14th amendment that states that everyone no matter what their skin color is they are still protected by the government. This text that America is not really believing it’s idea of equality since now people are looking for loopholes just to be able to treat kids of a specific color a different way. The website where I found this article is http://www.americanprogress.org/ this is a credible source mainly because it’s a web site where it talks about issues going on in America and one of it’s also because it’s a Government issued website which means that this website is known for having credible sources because if it would have a fake source it would be criticized and lose lots of it’s credibility. Ary Spatig-Amerikaner argues that kids of color are that are going to the same school as student that are white but are not getting the same education and that white students get more benefits then a student of color “ Today’s racial separation in schools may not have the formal mandate of local law, but it just as surely reflects and reinforces lingering status differences between whites and nonwhites by enabling a system of public education funding that shortchanges students of color”. This article draws back to the Brown vs Board of education case where the decision was that schools would no longer be segregated because it violated the 14th amendment. This week reading from “We the people” “What key challenges does the United States face in the future”where it explains that America's population will increase because of illegal immigrants coming over and that this is shown in the public schools so mainly you would see hispanics and blacks in a cheaper school then you would see a white child because of all the benefits.

  14. The article I read is about the cost of health care in the United States.Americans are saying that the U.S is paying twice as much as they should be paying for just one person. They say that the health insurance money wasted could cover for the health care of 150 million workers. They believe that the money wasted is not improving peoples' health. This connects to the article I read because it also has information on medical advances. In that article it is said that medical advances is good for the Americans and that it can increase the life span of 1 of 4 Americans to over 65 years old. This text is credible because it is from a important news source. The information is from a medical unit. The author does have strong evidence to support the argument. For example he says" The U.S. health care system wasted $750 billion on unnecessary and overpriced medical tests and treatments." He also says that "75,000 deaths might have been prevented if states delivered higher-quality care." The author uses statistics to prove his point and argue that he is correct in what he believes. The article I chose emphasizes the idea that the U.S. is wasting too much money on health care and that it should be used better. The class text informs us about how health care is beneficial for the people and its helping them live longer. The author from the article I chose says that "Unnecessary and inefficiently delivered health care services cost $340 billion in 2009." He believes that they are wasting to much money and not getting a good outcome. The class text says that "modern science is making it possible to sustain life across a broader age spectrum, beginning with the fetus and extending to advance old age." This shows that if less money is wasted on health care they can waste more money on important things like modern medical supplies. These texts show how America is wasting money and how it should be spent to improve the lives of Americans.

  15. In the article, “This Election, a Stark Choice in Health Care” by Abby Goodnough and Robert Pear they talk about both Mitt Romney's healthcare plan and Barack Obama's health care plan and how its going to affect the nation and our people. Romney wants to decrease the amount of americans who would have medicaid or medicare and hes planning to give each state a certain amount of money so that the states can have more control over the heath care benefits and wants people to pay more and have a private insurance plan.. Obama wants to continue his healthcare plan and expand it even more by giving it to even more millions of people who need it.
This text relates to the american ideal of equality because every american that needs medical insurance deserves to have it. Just because they might not have enough money to pay for medical assistance themselves the United States as a country that is supposed to help its americans should be required to give them that type of assistance. Wealthy people have enough money to cover their medical expenses but poor people do not and everyone deserves to be treated when in need of a doctor or anything medical. Every citizen in the United States should deserve the same amount of equality no matter what their economic status is. The Obama Care is an example that it is living up to its ideals because America as a democratic country should be in favor of the people, not just the rich.
This source is credible because it is from the New York Times which is a well known Newspaper. The New York Times has a reputation on the line so if they post false information they would not be as popular as they are today. Also because the texts in it are very intellectual meaning that not everyone would be able to understand the New York Times because they post very hard readings that not everyone with a low education can understand.
The authors do present strong evidence of the argument that they are trying to make which is that there is a strong decision to be made between the two presidential candidates. If Romney wins there will be a large impact on the fact that the government won't be in control of the healthcare anymore but they states would. If Obama wins even more millions of americans are going to have healthcare which is a good thing considering that most americans are low class and are not able to pay for healthcare themselves. “ When Americans go to the polls next month, they will cast a vote not just for president but for one of two profoundly different visions for the future of the country’s healthcare system”. This quotation is trying to show the importance of how the two different presidential candidates ideas will change america in someway. They will either benefit the american people or not.
This text connects to the class reading because they both are talking about the american people and the text that I chose talks about how its going to benefit the people. Most of the people being talked about in the class reading are from the lower class that seek more assistance from the government and immigrants which are also very dependent on the government because most of them that come to america are poor. Both authors of each text are talking about the american people and on bettering their lives.

  16. 1. The article I'm reading Is "Immigration Reform", former president Bush supported comprehensive immigration reform. Bush wanted to resolve the status of the millions of illegal immigrants already in the United States by making them US citizens. Bush encourage illegal immigrants to live in the America culture this included to learning how to speak english if you wanted to stay in this country. Former president George Bush had to improve border security, so the population of illegal immigrants won't increase. Border security funding increased from nearly $5 billion in 2001 to over $10 billion in 2007 another thing that increase was the border patrol agents it went from 9,000 to 18,000. Of those 18,000, Six thousand of them were National Guard troops that have been called to temporarily assist the Border Patrol. A new policy was made, deportations of illegal immigrants, many immigrants family were affected.

    2. The text "We The People", Chapter 37 is similar to the article "Immigration Reform" because they both talk about how immigrants had an impact on the United State. "In We The People" it talk about how recent immigrants enrich the nation economy. In the "Immigration Reform" explains how president George try to make a law in which many immigrants can benefit form. The United State is a country composed of immigrants of every nation. Immigrants made the United States the country it's today.

    3. The website I got the "Immigration Reform" was the U.S. Immigration Support. This website provides the most current information related to United States immigration. U.S. Immigration Support also provides free access to an extensive database of immigration related news and articles. This organization is a leading publisher of legal books and immigration guides. Their mission is to help immigrants through the United States immigration system with our "do-it-yourself" immigration guides. The U.S. Immigration Support also gives information about U.S. visas, Green Cards and citizenship application guides.

    4. The author of the "Immigration Reform" is unknown but he gives strong evidence about how former president George Bush try to help immigrants."enhance border security, introduce a temporary guest worker program, and penalize employers for willingly hiring illegal immigrants" this shows that George bush was trying to make programs to support immigrants.

    5. America is not living up to our ideals of protecting every humans natural rights. "We The People" chapter 37 it talks about how immigrants help this country in any kind of way and in the article I'm reading "Immigration Reform" talks immigrants been deported. The United State was build by immigrants and now a lot of them are been kick out of the United State. This affect many immigrants family because their kids that were born here stay and the parents go back to their country. The United State belief that every person is created equal but the immigration laws are proving that America is going against their own belief.

  17. The article that I choose was “The Downside of Diversity” by Michael Jonas and it is based on a counter argument of the negative affects of brought to American society with large diversity with in the society. “The Downside of Diversity” by Michael Jonas and “37:What Key Challenges Does The United States Face In The Future?” are similar in the way that they both express challenges faced in American society when different cultures and traditions from all over the world is combined in an are. “The Downside of Diversity” by Michael Jonas is a credible and reliable source to use because it is a prestigious news organization (New York Times) and also it has been able to maintain itself since 1851, which is obviously a very good time period for an organization. Michael Jonas uses statistics to provide evidence of his argument on “The Downside of Diversity” and this is shown when he says “our differences make us stronger. But a massive new study, based on detailed interviews of nearly 30,000 people across America, has concluded just the opposite.” This quote helps understand Michael Jonas’s argument because he backs his argument up with “a massive new study” which clearly shows that different people’s reactions were recorded. I actually agree with Michael Jonas and his argument of diversity in American society because as a result of things like this, America is not living up to its ideal principles of freedom because culture and diversity affect the things that people do in the way that people are far more confortable with other people of the same ethnic background as them.

  19. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/10/us/illegal-immigrants-see-opportunity-in-work-permit-rule.html?_r=0

In the article “Illegal Immigrants see Opportunity in New Rule” by Adeshina Emmanuel writes about the new government policy of work permits” that allows young illegal educated immigrants to start working. In “We the People” chapter 37, “Critics question whether such immigrants should be allowed to receive government services and other legal protections” (284). Well that question has been answered. In 2012, President Barack Obama took action and created The Dream Act; young illegal immigrants who are educated can remain permanently in the United States for a six-year period. Emmanuel gives an example of a 23-year-old Venezuelan immigrant, Juan Escalante, who has a bachelor’s degree in political science and international affairs at Florida State University but cannot apply to professional jobs. Therefore, Escalante is looking forward to the new policy.

Emmanuel continues the article with data from the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan group in Washington, says “140,000 illegal immigrants in this country are enrolled in college. An additional 80,000 already have college degrees – about 48 percent from two-year programs, 43 percent from four-year programs and 8 percent from graduate school.” Before the policy, the percentages of those immigrants were limited to jobs than needed proof of citizenship. Emmanuel is a freelance writer who has written for the New York Times. “We the People” and Emmanuel’s’ article are similar because in “We the People”, the chapter explains the impact of the future amount of immigrants that will live in the United States and the changes that will happen. Emmanuel’s article somewhat answers the changes that has happened recently and its future outcomes.

  20. The article "Should high-skilled immigrants get special treatment" by David Grant talks about how some people in Congress want to give special visas to foreign- born graduates of American universities, as long as they have advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering and math. This text connects to this weeks reading of chapter 37 of We The People because it states according to the U.S Census Bureau by 2050 "the population of the United States will exceed four hundred million". It also says that "most of the increase in population will result from immigration...” If more immigrants see that they can get a special visa by getting a certain degree, possibly more immigrants will try to go to school to get the visa in order to stay in the United States. This source is credible because it has many links that you can click on to find out more about the topic. Also when you click on the authors name it tells you all about the author. Another reason why this source is credible is because the author, David Grant asked representatives from different states how they feel about the topic. Author David Grant does present strong evidence by quoting governmental officials. Senator Mark Warner (D) of Virginia, who agrees with high skilled immigrants getting special treatment, says "It makes no sense that we require these graduates to return home so they can compete against us". This connects to the class reading because if more immigrants get a high degree in certain areas the population may rise more than the U.S Census Bureau predicts.

  21. According to article “We the People” it discusses the amount of monetary expenses that the government issues to those who are in need, or suffer from being in poverty. According to the statistical data explained in this article over 60% of the state money is invested in medical assistance and other financial issues plaguing the state. One of the few problems that States cover is financial help, which is over 6 billion dollars for children's medical insurance. Eduardo Porter state that the financial consumption for medical help will be 6.7 percent of the nation’s economic output by 2037, up from 3.7 percent today. Adding on, the presidential campaign also was stated because both President Barack Obama and Governor Romney have different issues on how to resolve this on their 4-year term, if either is elected. Obama proposes to address the problem by creating the Affordable Care Act, which heavily taxes the rich, and make the cost of this service much cheaper. On the other hand Governor Romney states plan is to give vouchers, which is very useless because it will cap the spending on this voucher.

This article connects to the text as both talk about the financial issues that society is facing. Although both do represent that problem, the article “We the People” also discusses the future of America and how much its problem will might be. One of these problems stated is financial debt. Overall the article also connects how the legislative branch passes laws that hurt the country. This also connects to the text because both describe how citizens are becoming too dependent on government for financial and medical assistance.

This source is credible due to the fact that the publisher has a high reputation across New York as well as the nation. Not only does the publisher have reputation, but also it has been founded in 1851, which means it has history of news. This article can also be found article as the journalist has been in this career for over two decades, adding on Eduardo Porter has worked with previous publishers such as The Wall Street Journal and Notimex, a Mexican news agency. This demonstrates that the writer obviously has record of writing credible and factual articles.
According to the author he agrees that the economic disaster is only worsening because there are families and individuals that are considered minorities who are over consuming the government’s wealth, which ultimately increases the taxes of citizens. Porter states, “And while raising more money from high-income Americans is a first step, most economists believe that to avoid cuts in health benefits the government must raise taxes on the middle class” (Porter, Cutbacks and the Fate of the Young). Eduardo Porter demonstrates his biased against minorities because he thinks the government intervenes too much in order to help the ones in need. Alongside this he also believes that the government intervenes so much that debt, in the next couple of years, will over exceed how much tax we pay compared to now. Porte agrees by stating, “Health spending has skyrocketed while middle-class wages have failed to keep up with the cost of living” (Porter).
Porter describes his opinion by stating what can happen if we don’t act now to stop government from intervening so much, which also breaks the government ideal of Laissez Faire. Porter argues this true by stating, we seem on track to bequeath our children a double whammy: a mountain of debt and substantial program cuts that will undermine their ability to shoulder it when their time comes" (Porter). This states that the more time we spend now trying to spend more money without limiting the money being spend in the first place, it will be much more difficult to resolve our financial issues now.

  22. Based on the article I found which is "Romney Softens On Immigration, But Will It help Him With Hispanics"? It was about how Romney allowing young illegal immigrants to stay in the United States. This does not follow to the American ideal of constitutionalism and equality. This does not follow these ideals because "... increasingly powerful Hispanics vote.....". This shows nothing to be able to vote. In order to be able to vote you must need a certified ID and legal papers and social security. That's the law. Even now people are starting to get their papers done in time to become a U.S citizen and not still be illegal with no papers. This text is credible because its from the " National Journal" and it's written by Beth Reinhard. But it's also trustworthy enough to use because now its politics season and immigration is being dealt with it now. One example from this text is that " Obama's order was to stop deporting children brought to the United States illegally by their parents". This proves that Obama wants to stop immigration and Romney does not want to. In order to become a citizen and not an immigrant, all you need is legal papers and proof of Social Security.
Based on all American ideals, immigration is not following any of them. Beth Reinhard the author of " Romney softens on immigration, but will it help him with Hispanics"? Sticking with immigration and allowing illegal immigrants staying in the United States, means that it's not following any of the American ideals. This violates the 5th amendment of the Constitution stated from " We the people" in the section of Property Rights. Its a bad thing to remove property of others who earned it and paid for it to just allow illegal immigrants staying around those areas. That's why immigration does not follow the American ideals.

  23. The article I read was called “Health Care Reform”, published on September 24, 2012, the article talked closely about the reformation on the health care issue Americans faced. On March 23, 2010, President Barrack Obama signed a legislation to overhaul the nation’s original health care system and guarantee access to medical insurance for many Americans. The act is called The Affordable Care Act, it works “…primarily by expanding Medicaid and providing federal subsidies to help lower- and middle-income” (2012).This article links backs to Chapter 37 of We the People because this chapter brings up the argument that new technological advances and cultural diversity (immigration)will re-shape America. The Affordable Care Act takes action on re-shaping America in our current and monitorial deprived generation. The piece “Health Care Reform” is a credible source because it comes from NewYorkTimes.com which is a big news corporation that has much to lose if they lie in their news. Also, the article contains strong data, such as comparison between the past health care law and the new health care law. The article also contains hyperlinks to other credible websites and news sources. The author represents the argument by providing well represented data such as “The law will cost the government about $938 billion over 10 years, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, which has also estimated that it will reduce the federal deficit by $138 billion over a decade” (2012). This quote shows the readers that the author stands in the metaphorical “team” that is the new health care reform.

The article i read is about how Mitt Romney will continue Barrack Obama waivers for children of illegal immigrants. This was a very interesting article i choosed because i found it interesting that Mitt Romney would actually try to help or continue helping immigrants in the united states. I also found it interesting that Mitt Romney would try to help immigrants because last week when i was writing about voting ID laws it would be directly too them, But if he wins he is trying to be helpful to them. This article was interesting because when i was reading it Mitt Romney is trying to be on the other side of Barrack Obama by saying "he would work with congress during the first year of his presidency to pass permanent immigration reform". I disagree with what he said here because if congress didn't agree with Barrack Obama idea of the DREAM Act what makes it so sure that congress will agree on mitt romney idea and let him do that. This source is credible due to source such as the national journal and the Denver Post and everything Mitt Romney is saying is being quoted. The author does not give enough evidence to prove what Mitt Romney is trying to do the author is just stating what are mitt romney plans towards immigration. I think that this article could also be described as equality because if Mitt Romney becomes president then he will try his best to treat the illegal immigrants right.

  25. The article that I used is “In 12 Race, Mayor seeks immigration discussion” written by Kate Taylor. This article talks about how New York city Mayor R. Bloomberg wants to go to the states where the candidates have their headquarters to do a public discussion on the role of immigrants in the United States. According to this article mayor Bloomberg seems to have very positive feelings toward immigrants. Mayor Bloomberg said “if we are going to create jobs in this country, we have to have immigrants”. These words by major Bloomberg are very strong. He shows full support to the immigrant communities on staying in the United States. In this article mayor Bloomberg also advocates to give green cards to foreign born graduates who graduate from a masters or doctoral programs in subjects like math and science among many others. This article relates to our class discussions and to chapter 37 on the book “We the People” because during class we talk about how different presidents and political parties have different views on different topics. Even if we dint discuss the idea of immigration this is certainly a topic that is going to make a huge difference on the way people vote during elections. It also relates to the reading because they talk about how much immigration has affected this country. The country went from 4 million people in the 1790 to, 300,000,000 in 2007.They talk about how the country might not be able to take so much diversity. Also the reading states that there might be some disadvantages and advantages to immigration. Mayor Bloomberg sees immigrants as something positive for the state of New York and for the entire nation. This article comes from a reliable source because it’s publishing by the New York Times. The New York Times is a very important company in the news section. Also the source is reliable because the author quotes the Mayor of New York City. The article also offers direct links to other New York Times post articles. The author provides strong evidence of her arguments because she quotes important people such as the mayor of NYC. She also talks about other important events such as radio shows that Mr. Bloomberg was on.

  26. The article which i found was "Schools Brace for Decision on Affirmative Action" by Richard Perez-Pena. This article is about how colleges and universities are looking closely into admissions submitted by certain races. this article connects to this weeks text of "We The People", Chapter 37 in numerous ways. In chapter 37 of "We the People" it talks about how immigrants coming from all over diffrent countries would eventually make up majority of the country's population by the year 2050. It also states in the text, "Most of the increase in population will result from immigration, that is, from people coming from other countries with the intent of remaining in the United States"(278). Richard Perez-Pena's text is credible becuase it was published by the New York Times, also Mr. Perez-Pena has published numerous articles for the New York Times. Mr. Perez-Pena states strong evidence to support his arguement, in his article he writes,"Schools are bracing for three broad categories of possible outcomes in the case, Fisher v. University of Texas: a complete and history-making ban on race-conscious admissions, a tightening of the current limitations on consideration of race or ethnicity, or a decision that more or less leaves things as they are." The quote explains how the University of texas is now considering accept certain applicants from certain races into their campus. The class reading touches the topic of how America would look in the next 40 years based on statistics, Richard Perez-Pena's article also touches on the same idea but on a much more specific topic.

On the New York Times site I found this article called "After Ruling, Hispanics Flee an Alabama Town" by Campbell Robertson. Its a Article about the day after an court official upheld the law.The new law would "allowing state and local police to ask for immigration papers during routine traffic stops, rendering most contracts with illegal immigrants unenforceable and requiring schools to ascertain the immigration status of children at registration time."The is relevant to the article we read this week called "We The People" (Chapter 37)because the author ask this question should illegal immigrants allow the same services as American citizens. This source is credible because this report is from the New York Times comes from a well known and highly respected news paper. The Author of the times report uses great evidence, one that really struck me was the aftermath of the decision by the Alabama court officials, about 123 students withdrew from school and by Friday 1.988 Hispanics students were absent. It was 5% of the school wide Hispanic population.I strongly disagree with this decision made by these officials and america is not living up to its idea of equality for all.But I see the invisible * in the statement all men are created equal. The source I have found takes place 3 years ago when immigration was turning more of a domestic issue. Also how all of a sudden immigration is a target for most of the republicans. The article is mentioning other domestic issues like health care. The congressman were mostly concentrated what was occurring during the wart and what were the next moves. But immigration was an issue that kept coming up to the congressman in the legislative branch.

It relates to this week’s topic because it’s talking one of the domestic issues that the presidential candidates are talking about to be able to get votes. It ‘s not only to get votes but as well to change how United States is functioning their immigration rules. In, “We the People: Chapter 37” mentioned how congressman were going to make the laws more complex and an obligation for the immigrants to learn. The same way in this article is mentioning that the republicans are trying to, “strengthening immigration laws” (Frankovic).

One reason this source is credible is because it comes from a well-known news report corporation, CBS news. The author Kathy Frankovic is well known for the best news coverage and world’s leading expert. She also has awards and has well for the researcher. She is also the Senior Producer of CBS. This person is credible and as well the website.

The author presents strong evidence stating statistics from the domestic issues. Also having some words from the House of Representatives and the senators. The author is also bringing the republican candidates like John McCain and Mitt Romney.

Immigration topic has always been part of the domestic issues. In “We The People: Chapter 37” mentions main topics that were mentioned in the source. Some differences were in the source mentioned more about the population increasing because of immigration and would increase minority percentage. But in the source, shows how immigration must be stricter. But both have points of making the language strengthen so there would be diversity but with the American life.

  29. The text that I found was a good credible source because it's and article by James Flaigan named "Immigration Benefits U.S Economy Now as Ever".and this article helps me express the importance of immigrants coming into the U.S. This article " Imigration Benefits u.s economy now as ever" by James Flaigan connects to the "We the people ' chapter 37 because both illlustrates how immigrant help the U.S economically and socially. In thewe the people is states that the united states would improve in the year 2050. for example " The typical american neighborhoods would be in the south or west "[or]"medical advances will help americans live longer...[some can live up to ] over the age of 65"(278) . These change have been made mainly because if the united states is actually changing as the expect their social and economy institute will have to change because of the immigrants. Los Angeles times is a credible source because it a highly visited news website in Los Angeles. also when you compare the Los Angeles time to The new York times they are highly similar. James Flaigna use many statistical evidence in other to show the amount of immigrants immigrating to the united states and also to show how that amount i=of pepople would benifit the U.S in the long run because of all the new adaption s and changes that te=he U.S has to do .For example James states" about million of the immigrants live in the united states: more of 12% what this is pointing out is that , that 12% of immigrants are the people that are going to help the united states. I figure that the new Immigrant coming to the U.S would result in both good and bad ways. it would turn out to be a good thing mainly because they come to the united states to work and start up their life and we need work and jobs in the united states, but this also results in a bad way because the people that are already here and are going to be looking for jobs are going to be competing for the new jobs.

  30. Health care has turned into a major concern for low income individuals and families. Possible voters have a major decision to make; they aren't sure which candidate stands for their individual believes. This is why the presidential debates are so important to help ease the decision making process. Specifically when it comes to the subject of Health Care. “Mr. Obama would expand Medicaid to cover millions more people; Mr. Romney would effectively shrink it, giving each state a fixed amount of federal money to cover its disadvantaged population with more control over eligibility and benefits... Mr. Obama would preserve the structure of Medicare but try to rein[control] in costs, in part by trimming payments to health care providers” (Goodnough and Pear). Mr.Obama is making the effort to help the low income people, while Romney demonstrates no support. New York Times is a credible local newspaper that provides statistics on important state, government and society issues, concerns, and accomplishments. Reporters Abby Goodnough and Robert Pear published an article on October 10,2012 concerning the diminishing case of health care for low income individuals and families. “This Election, a stark choice in Health Care” reports the individuals and families opinions on which candidate is willing to provide health care. Elections are held on November 6, 2012. “We are all on hold, waiting to see what the election brings,”(Ms. Beck). “This Election, a stark choice in Health Care” connects to We The People, Chapter 37 because these stories discuss the challenges that might and have affected individuals the past and in coming years. The economic system has not been in good condition since 2007. And so health care has been put aside, budget wise it is not as important to the government than money. Both Goodnough and Pear provide a strong evidence that supports the issues on health care. Obama signed a health care reform (legislation) on March 23, 2010 that allowed access to medical insurance for tens of millions of Americans. Health care has been a major topic that individuals and presidents have been debating about with the supreme court and the state. Health care plays an important role in the low income society because it is hard to pay hospital bills every time you attend. Health care is being fought for. For the sake of children, the elderly, people with disabilities, low income people and adults.

  31. The name of the article I read this week is called “For Families Of Medicare Recipients Insurance Choices are Tricky” published on October 8, 2012. This article is about the benefits of health care and a couple. The couple Bruce Osterweil and Patricia Furlong are from San Francisco. Bruce is 59 years old and Patricia turned 65 years old. She provided the family with health care though her job at a small financial consulting firm. But since she retired she walked away from the company’s health care benefits.

Now that means Bruce is on his own with health insurance. Bruce said “ I’m really surprised at how hard it could be for just the average person who isn’t an actuary or benefits consultant to figure any of this out. It’s Astonishing”. Joe Baker president of the Medicare Rights Center of a hotline for Medicare that questions. Baker stated that after the age of 26 adults are no longer covered with their parent’s medicare. In the future there would be more options for adults starting in 2014 with all the federal health laws out there.

One of those laws is COBRA, which allows someone to pay full price to stay on the individual employer’s group plan. This article states a plan of the future and so does the reading from class. The article talks about health care and their benefits and the reading talks about some challenges that the United States would face in the future. They both state future plans to ensure people’s life in different ways. The article talks about federal health laws that can assist people. This website NPR produces, distributes news and it’s a common well-known website. The author supports their evidence by describing a real-life situation.
The article provided a clear understanding on the assistance of health care. The article claim “ That means, Osterweil, who is 59 and self-employed benefits consult, is shopping for his own health insurance”. These federal health laws will reform specific group of people’s life in many different ways, Some of these people are children, young adults, families with children, seniors, african americans, americans with disabilities, asian americans and pacific islanders, early retirees, employers, latinos, and women

  32. The subject of homosexuality tends to be a polarizing topic. Its is not an easy one at that, some people might have trouble supporting homosexuality because of their religion or upbringing. Even though not everyone in America supports homosexuality they should accept it. Yes, 58% are okay with it but still what about the 42% who are not. In the article it says that the public is divided over same- sex marriage but isn't that stepping America away from its value of equality. Why shouldn't a person be allow to marry someone of their own sex if they love each other, isn't the real value of marriage committing to someone you love? So then why does it make a difference on who that person. This is awfully similar to the civil rights era and before when blacks and whites where not allow to celebrate their commitment, that wasn't seen as being equal, so what’s the difference now ?

The text I chose is called “ "America, land of the Equals" by Chrystia Freeland. This article revolves around how America is viewed by the world as the superpower of equality.but contrasting this idea is the reality that as time has progressed in the united states, America has widened the gap between its richest and poorest in terms of income.

This article is relevant to the class discussions because in class we have been discussing how America recently has not been living up to its egalitarian ideals from which this nation was founded on and this article proves this statement with evidence like income. Egalitarian ideals are ideals of equality.

This article is credible because it is from the New York Times, an american newspaper founded in 1851 and has won over 110 pulitzer prizes( more than any other newspaper) . It also receives over 30 million viewers on their website.Anything published on this prestigious news source is bound to be credible and accurate because any flaws would tarnish their reputation.

The author Chrystia Freeland uses evidence to show that america has become less equal in term of income. for example Freeland finds an expert to agree with her and and say “Dr. Lindert said: “The rest of the world can’t come close to the 1 percent in America these days.” Peter H. Lindert, an economist researched and concluded that America has been widening the gap between rich and poor since the american revolution. This expert testimony supports the article’s argument. This article proves the argument from class which is that america has not been living up to its egalitarian ideals. This article exemplifies an example of how america has not maintained its egalitarian beliefs throughout times in terms of income. “There has been an absolute reversal,” Dr. Lindert told me. “Compared to any other country from which we have data, America in that era [revolutionary war] was more equal. Today, the Americans are the outliers in the other direction.” America needs to return to its basic principles of equality in order to be considered the democratic superpower of the world

  34. The article that I read was called “The Downside of Diversity” by Michael Jonas. The article talked about the downsides of having a large ‘melting pot’ of different cultures in America. Jonas argues that instead of increasing civic strength, cultural diversity weakens it. Jones begins to talk about the Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam and the study he conducted based on detailed interviews given to nearly 30,000 people across America. Putnam found that the more cultural diversity in a neighborhood, the fewer people vote, volunteer and give to different charities. Putnam studies found in his book shows how civic health is threatened when their are a large amount of diverse people in one setting. This text connects to Chapter 37 of We the People because the text talked about the promising future that America will have in the future because of cultural diversity. Since these two articles contradict each other, they both bring out the cost and benefits of cultural diversity.. The Downside of Diversity by Michael Jones is a credible source because the author, Michael Jonas began his journalism career in Dorchester Community News, a popular newspaper in Boston. There he covered a large range of urban issues. Jonas has also been a regular contributor to the Boston Globe since the late 1980’s. Jonas also works on columns discussing local politics.

Jonas begins to talk about the Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam and the study he conducted based on detailed interviews given to nearly 30,000 people across America,”The study comes at a time when the future of the American melting pot is the focus of intense political debate, from immigration to race-based admissions to schools, and it poses challenges to advocates on all sides of the issues”. Putnam found that the more cultural diversity in a neighborhood, the fewer people vote, volunteer and give to different charities. Putnam studies found in his book shows how civic health is threatened when their are a large amount of diverse people in one setting. This text connects to Chapter 37 of We the People because the text discusses the promising future that America will have because of cultural diversity. Since these two articles contradict each other, they both bring out the cost and benefits of cultural diversity.According to Chapter 37 of We the People, “Racial lines will blur..” as more immigrants enter the United States. This will allow a stop to racial discrimination amongst people. While this is a good thing, Jonas disagrees and writes “...virtually all measures of civic health are lower in more diverse settings.” This shows that while diversity can be a good thing for the relationship between the citizens of the United States, it can be bad for the civic health of our country.
