This assignment is for Civics, Period 2 and Period 3.
The weekly assignment consists of five parts:
1) Read the assignment. This week's reading is from The Dictator's Handbook. It is Chapter 1, and you can find it here. If you want to print it out, you can after school.
2) Take Cornell Notes on the reading. I will collect these notes on Friday in class.
3) Find another credible source on the internet that connects to the reading above or to the class topic from this week ("Is America living up to our ideals?"). You can use any of the sites I have listed on the right, or more general news sites like nytimes.com.
4) After you read the source that you find, answer the following questions as a blog entry below:
- Write a summary sentence for the text you found.
- How does the text connect to that week’s topic or to the other text you have read?
- What evidence do you have that the text you found is credible?
- Does the author present strong evidence to support his/her argument? Provide an example.
- What would the author of your text say about the class text from that week?
- What would the author of the class text say about your text from that week?
Keep in mind that everyone else will see what you write below, so please keep it professional. This post is due Thursday, 9/20, by 5:00pm.
5) Come to class on Friday ready to discuss the reading and the text you found!
If you need support or have questions, my office hours are Monday and Wednesday from 3:15-4:15 in Room 229.
The NY article, “Money for Nothing” is about how large budget deficts will cause an overwhelming result of economic crisis towards the people in the US. The text connects to our class this week because the article explains how the governments control on money influences the people decision and their view on the government and how the government uses their power. This article is credible because the NY time is large and well known newspaper label and many people read this newspaper. Yes the author uses an expert, “In March 2011, Erskine Bowles, the co-chairman of President Obama’s ill-fated deficit commission, warned that unless action was taken on the deficit soon, “the markets will devastate us,” probably within two years.” The author would argue that the government has too much power over the peoples decision and that would affect how the people see the president and his decisions on the economy. The author of class would agree that the governments control on the money that goes in and out of the community is unequal because the regular people don’t have the same money as giant companies since the companies are considered people. But the companies would argue that they can have their freedom of speech and they can defend their position strong.
ReplyDeleteThe article I choose is called “The Poor -- A Strong Swing Vote” written by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson. This article has to with how the poor, doesn’t really vote and how they are often ignored by political campaigns, but are now seen as potential swing voters which can really bring a difference to future political elections. This article connects to the reading we read in class called “Restoring Free Speech in Elections”. They connect because the first article talks about how people believe as quoted “in a democracy, poor people are potentially rich voters. Their votes count as much as those of wealthy voters, and there are many more poor people”. This article expresses thoughts and opinions on how the author views political elections. While the second article talks about how The Supreme Court now allows “ any group to speak out on the core political issues of the day on behalf of its members, contributors, shareholders, employees and the like” under the First Amendment. One article talks about how there has been change while the other article does the action able to be done by the change. The Article I found online is credible because it is branched from the New York Times, a universal newspaper that is strongly trusted. The article however comes from The Washington informer another newspaper online that is always tide to The New York Times making it credible as well. The author of the article I choose online does present strong evidence to back up his ideas. Jackson brings his own expertise and experience to his article. He writes “I know this from personal experience. In 1984, my campaign for the presidency focused on reaching and registering poor and minority voters. In 1986, what one southern Senator called the "new voter" transformed the electorate in Georgia and elsewhere and helped Democrats take back the Senate”. He brings his personal experience into the article in order to support his argument on the poor being very helpful when it come to presidential elections this helped make his argument stronger. What the author of the article I found online would say about the reading in class is that, due to the First Amendment he was able to speak out and fight for the poor during presidential elections. He was also able to defend his argument by using one of the candidates in this year’s election by saying, “Mitt Romney invoked the poor as part of his attack on Barack Obama's policies. But his own agenda features devastating cuts in basic support for the poor — Medicaid, food stamps, Head Start, aid to poor schools, public housing, training — to help pay for another round of corporate and personal tax cuts, largely pocketed by the very rich.” While the author from the text in class would add on and say that at least the First Amendment is taken serious by that author because he is expressing his feelings about presidential elections. He would also say that the article online is a perfect example of why it is important and why it is helpful that the Supreme Court is taking the First Amendment more serious now.

The NY Times article called “Military Cuts and Tax Plan Are Central to Obama's Budget” is about the president obama wants to reduce deficit in order to pay for things like education , public works, research , and clean energy. This text connects to this week text the Dictatorships Handbook because this book explains taxes and how government just provides a good welfare for us so we are happily paying all these high taxes. This text credible because is coming the New York Times a well known newspaper and also because the author Jackie Calmes is the New York Times White House correspondent. The author of this text provides a strong evidence when she uses statistics such as “through his proposals to raise $1.5 trillion over 10 years mostly from the wealthy but also from closing some corporate tax breaks”. This of course does not raise any more revenues since they want to root out many tax breaks lower than the 35 percent rate. The author is this text would most likely with Mesquit because Mesquita explains how we willingly pay for taxes just because we want protection. We do not want the government to use our tax money to pay the president or the prime minister. I think Mesquita would agree with Calmes because In the Dictator's Handbook Mesquita explains how the government taxes heavily on the poor and that money is given g to the winning coalition which just makes them wealthy while the poor stays poor. Mesquita would also just agree with Obama’s budget this would benefit the lower income class and the middle income class too.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/23/business/ford-and-toyota-to-work-together-on-hybrid-trucks.html
ReplyDeleteThe following text “Ford and Toyota to Work Together on Hybrid System for Trucks” describes how two car brands get united to work on an idea that they came up with to build a hybrid system for trucks. This article connects to the class text we are reading this week because one part of the class text talks about that nothing can be done by only one person. In other words, team work has to exist somewhere in a job where more than one person is needed. For example, the text states, “All of these notions are flat out wrong because no emperor, no king, no sheikh, no tyrant, no chief executive officer (CEO), no family head, no leader whatsoever can govern alone” (1). This quote sticks to the same idea as the article above. They’re basically saying that we sometimes need another hand, not everything can be done just by one person. Therefore, in order to make everything go well and smooth without any problems, you must find an ally to help you out, just like Ford and Toyota looked for each other to work together. This text is definitely credible because it came from the website www.nytimes.com, a very popular website, which means if they ever post false information; there will not have as much viewers as they have today. In other words, anything they post up after they post up the false information, millions of people will not believe a word they state. The author of this chosen article uses evidence to support his argument because he clearly uses statistics. For instance he says, “… having sold 3.3 million since introducing the popular Prius car in 1997”. Basically, Brunkley is demonstrating that the topic he has chosen to discuss about should be interesting to others, especially by including some statistics into the article. The author of my text would most likely agree with the class text from this week because both pieces of writing focuses in the main idea of not achieving goals with anyone’s help because that’s not possible. Also, even though absolute monarchies had total power over everyone, they needed help from somebody because absolute monarchies weren’t going to be able to control everyone they were in charge of. The author of the class text from this week would say to my article from this week would definitely feel a positive feeling because the article shows that working as allies were going to take both Ford and Toyota somewhere achievable and helpful for their companies. Working together is a way to accomplish goals.
What makes a dictator... A dictator? Bruce Bueno De Mesquita and Alastair Smith, authors of The Dictator's Handbook, both assure that a dictator does not make his decisions by himself. One who leads can not make his decisions right off the top of his head, at least not anymore. However, in the political world, one needs to organize a group of potential followers who can support and conclude a rational decision. Mesquita and Smith started off with Louis XIV as an example of a previous ruler who created an inner circle of people that were loyal to him. "Those who were privileged to be in his 'winning coalition...any one of them could be easily replaced if they did not prove sufficiently trustworthy and loyal to the king". This shows that even dictators need back up. Surprisingly, Mesquita and Alastair wrote an article in the prestigious newsletter The New York Times. Mesquita and Alastair's article "How Tyrants Endure" talks about how do dictators thrive? Mesquita and Alastair writes "Despotic rulers stay in power by rewarding a small group of loyal supporters...But they only carry out this messy, unpleasant task if they are well rewarded". This shows that a dictators power can only be sure of thriving is if he has a group of supporters. Mesquita and Alastair would agree that a dictator does not rule by himself. And if so, chances of a rebellion would undermine his power.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/25/nyregion/congressman-michael-g-grimms-campaign-office-is-vandalized.html?ref=campaignfinance
ReplyDeleteThe article "Congressman's Campaign Office Vandalized" by Alison Leigh Cowan and William K. Rashbaum is about Michael G. Grimm, a Representative of Staten Island, claims that the headquarters was broken into over the weekend and "confidential campaign files and polling data" was erased. Soon after, the New York Police Department began investigating and determining whether he accepted illegal donation in his successful 2010 race. The allegations involve a fund raiser for the 2010 campaign, which was acused in August with immigration fraud. This article connects to "An Electoral Catastrophe", because Grimm's campaign finances had issues as well as the Citizens United case in the other article. There was an issue because they were under investigation by federal prosecuters which connects with the illegal donations. As a representative of Staten of Island, this could jeapordize his re-election because the people wouldn't want to be representated by someone who uses illegality. This text is credible because the NYTimes is well commonly known for it's positive reputation and if the NYtimes publishes non credible articles, there'll be a rapid change in it's reputation, whcih means it won't be reliable. Mr. Grimm doesn't present strong evidence because police experts had examined the campaign's computer systems and concluded that nothing had been erased or tampered with after he said the files and polling data were erased. He had no evidence to back up his argument and only argued that one point. Alison Leigh Cowan and William K. Rashbaum would agree that there was no evidence and that the argument was weak and his chances were low.
In the New York Time the article "Romney Ads Reaches Out To Working Class" by Ashley Parker, is about candidate Mitt Romney is seeking to bounce back after a leaked video shows Romney making comments about people who don't pay their income taxes. This article connects to this weeks topic of "Is America living up to our ideals" because the article goes on to talk about how Romney plans on recovering from his mistakes by making ads to help influence swing states to vote for him. In the article Parker writes, "On Wednesday, the Romney campaign reserved $3.4 million worth of advertising time in eight swing states." This means Mitt Romney's campaign has spent $3.4 million just on the swing states advertisements. This text is credible because it was published by the New York Times, it also has numerous hyperlinks that connect to this years presidential elections including current President Barack Obama. What Ashley Parker would say about this weeks topic of "Is America living up to our ideals" is that the actions Mitt Romney is taking to run for president is part of republicanism since he trying to become he next leader for this country. What the author of the class text would say about Parker's article is that it is a valid text source that connects touches the ideals of republicanism, but doesn't connect to every other American ideal.
ReplyDeleteThe article I found was “At Huge Rally, North Koreans Declare Kim Their Leader” by Choe Sang-Hun. It talks about how Kim Jongun the new Supreme leader in North Korea took an emotional turning point for the hermetic country. He was announced on Thursday September 20, 2012 by Kim Yong-nam, the president of the North Koran parliament who is considered the ceremonial head of state. This article connects to our week’s topic about leaders and leadership and how to maintain your power. I feel this article is showing how powerful Kim Jongun is because he had thousands of people cheering for him and showing there appreciations towards him. Additionally North Korea rewarded Kim Jongun with the honorific titles of “great leader”, “dear leader”, “peerless leader and “the sun of the 21st century” for now. This article is credible because if from a very well-known company which is New York Times has an author and has many hyperlinks that connect with other articles based on leadership and dictators. Choe Sang-Hun really does present a strong evidence of his argument because this article gives enough information that show the people that Jongun is going to be a good leader in North Korea due to the number of people that voted for him and the amount of people that showed up during his announcement at Central Square in Pyongyang.” The announcement was made before a crowd of tens of thousands that gathered in a central square in Pyongyang, the North’s capital…”. This is important because this is one type of evidence which is statics; it gave us an approximately number of people that were at the announcement conformation. Choe Sang-Hun will agree with Bruce Bueno de Mesquita because they both believe that in order to be a good leader they need to have people by their side that would support them and believe in them. Sang-Hun states “At noon on Thursday, the country observed three minutes of silence nationwide in memory of Kim Jong-il. Trains and ships sounded their horns, state news media reported. Similar but smaller ceremonies were held in cities across North Korea, the country’s official Korean Central News Agency reported”. Showing that Kim Jong-il was a great leader and had people in his ceremony to pay their respect towards him. Bruce Bueno de Mesquita reads “staying in power, as we now know, requires the support of others”. Bruce Bueno de Mesquita will agree with Choe Sang-Hun because they both agree about having most people by their side what gives them more power and if they think the people aren’t loyal to them they can replace them and find others that are both loyal and trustworthy. After all having the most power also deals with money and how much money you’re willing to waste on the people who vote and support you but money can be risky too.” Money it is said is the root of all evil. That can be true, but in some cases money can serve as the root of all that is good about governance”
ReplyDeleteThe title of the article I read from the Ny times is called “ Obama sets Stage for Clash of Governing Ideals “ and it was published on January 25, 2011. One thing Obama stated in this article was that the ideological battle of the coming year which surprisingly had different views of the role of the government. Obama feels that the federal government must play a central role in the guiding of the country’s economic future. To confront the rising economic powers that ate away at America’s lead while the nation was involved in the post of sept. 11 decade. Obama feels like America is way behind, and the american’s needs are not being met. South Korean’s home have a greater access to the internet, Europe and Russia have invested more time and money on railroads then American have and China is building newer airports and faster train, something American isn’t showing interested in doing. I believe the US government isn’t taking the opportunity to improve their nation. Mr.Obama is nearly the first president to rekindle the war competition in an effort to force Americans to side aside the political difference and to come together to improve the nation, have some equality and come as a whole. The necessary ingredients for global competitive success are education infrastructure and innovation Obama believes. This article can be compared to the article we read in class called “An Electoral Catastrophe”, they both state things they to improve. In the article from class is states how Chief Justice disagree with the idea of democracy he feels like it can be improved. He disagrees with the fact that only the rich Americans can decided certain things. I feel like this is unequal because us, the normal people don’t have a say in the government, which limits the American Ideals. In this case the normal people’s power are very limited and are in control, as freedom of speech. Individualism is not being practice if the rich people make the decision in court. This text is credible because it’s from a well known website that has been visited numerous times by many people. The argument that the author of this article has stated is based on the improvement towards changing the economic of America. This author clearly states somethings other countries have that they don’t have, “Countries in Europe and Russia invest more in their roads and railways than we do. China is building faster trains and newer airports.” The author of this article would agree with the point made in the class article, that it’s unequal that the only changes made it was by the court itself. He would disagree in the fact that it’s unequal because thats a way the America's Ideals aren’t being met. The author of the class text would agree with Obama in the improvement of America’s economic. He would also say that America needs a strong government and authority (constitutionalism) in order to expand the economy’s power in America.

ReplyDeleteHelene Cooper in “ Obama tells U.N new democracies need free speech” argues the fact the Mr. Obama is trying to improve the protection among the peoples first amendment's, freedom of speech. This text connects to “ An electoral catastrophe” in which both texts discuss the issue of freedom of speech. Joel M. Gora, “The supreme court has invalidated a ban which prohibited all corporations and all labor unions from speaking out about government and politics in any way that even mentions a politician or an incumbent office holder running for election.” This means corporations and labor unions are not being protected by the first amendment because the government is prohibiting them from saying their opinions about the government and unless it is positive. This connects to “Obama tells U.N. new democracies need free speech” in which they both argue the issue that the government does not want any negative opinions towards authority. “Obama tells U.N. new domocracies need free speech” is a credible source because it was posted on the new york times.com which is a big company who cannot afford to post fake articles that would cause the company to loose money. The evidence that shows the text that I choose has a strong argument is when Mr. Obama says, “ -before a sometimes skeptical audience that has number completely bought into the American idea that even hateful speech is protected - why the united states values its first amendment so high. “ This evidence shows the government has no right to violate the first amendment of the American citizens. the author from my text Helene Cooper would agree with Fred Wertheimer, in which
Cooper addresses the issue that the government was violating citizens first amendment. The author of the class text, Fred Wertheimer, would also agree with the text by Helene Cooper in which she also argues the issue that the government does not want to listen to offensive arguments, although corporations have to write to disagree with the government.
This article “Ford and Toyota Work Together On Hybrid System For Trucks” talks about how two famous car brands are cooperating together to work with an idea that they worked on to build a hybrid for trucks. Ford and Toyota are normally competitors but they will work together so that they can make something more new and affordable to the people. This text connects to our weeks topic because in this particularly America is living up to our ideals because our “ideals” are more to benefit the people of America and that is what they are trying to do by making hybrid trucks. This text is credible because it is from The New York Times, they are very known nationwide and have a reputation so that if they post false information it would hurt their reputation. The New York Times is also a newspaper that if something false is on it the people will instantly react to it and it would hurt their business. Yes there is strong evidence to support on the development of the hybrid trucks. “By collaborating, Ford and Toyota hope to reduce the costs and development time of such work and keep hybrid trucks from becoming too expensive or lacking in performance”. This quotation is saying how they are basically going to build better, more efficient, and cheaper trucks in order so that it can be more affordable to the people. If it becomes more affordable to the people many are going to buy it. The author of this text would agree with the author of the class text because they both basically talk about how they want to be the one most in power, even tho its power in a different way, its still some type of power. For example a monarch and a dictator rule the people and are just one person in charge of many. The author of this article is trying to tell the reader how both Ford and Toyota want to work together in order to build a more efficient car and even tho they are still competitors they want to have the #1 car. Overall, this text connects to our weeks topic “Is America Living Up To Our Ideals?” because America as democratic country is supposed to help and benefit the people of America and by making these trucks affordable and better it is living up to their ideals.

ReplyDeleteThe article that I have chosen is a NY Times piece that speaks about the propaganda attracting the Jewish vote and how it effects the election. Republicans are going after Jewish voters who view President Barack Obama to be an “unreliable” representative when it comes to Israel’s security. This is important because a majority of the Jewish voters are democratic and voted for Barack Obama in 2008. The Republican Party, Mr. Romney, wants to influence Jewish voters to vote Republican, in other words, vote for Mitt Romney. I chose this article specifically because it really shows the American ideals of republicanism, private property, and freedom of speech. These are three very strong ideals that really, in my opinion, play a very big part in who gets elected or not. This relates to what we’ve been doing in class because it talks about American politics with clouded examples of Republicanism and how it effects the election. This article is a credible source because it gives the reader hyper links to pages like “American Jewish Committee” and “Mitt Romney” (that are also involved with the NY Times) that justifies what the article talks about, the NYTimes website is also a credible source because it a is large company that contains a high reputation as one of the most reliable news resource, not telling the truth would their reputation. Evidence that the article gives are the statistics that were given, for example this quote from the article shows how Barack Obama has the Jewish voter’s advantage “According to the Gallup daily tracking poll conducted from July 1 to Sept. 10, 70 percent of registered Jewish voters planned to vote for Mr. Obama, compared with 25 percent for Mitt Romney. In the spring, Gallup’s poll showed Mr. Obama up 64 percent to 29 percent against Mr. Romney.” The republican party sees this an opportunity because “Sixty-nine percent still shows that President Obama has real trouble in the Jewish community, and it hints at the challenges he is facing among a reliable Democratic constituency,” said Matthew Brooks, the executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition. I assume that the author would agree because the text from this week “The Dictator’s Handbook” talks about how all power comes from voters, that we must stop believing that these leaders are in “sole control of their respective nation”. The author of the book would agree to this because in the book it talks about how absolute power is fiction, that the citizens allow the government to do what it does, to be what it is.

“Is America living up to our ideals” ? Of democracy ,equality, freedom of speach private property, republicanism, and individualism? The article “Do We Hate the Rich or Don’t We?” by Andrew Gelman explains how the gap between the rich and the poor is growing becoming more noticeable to the public and how the government isn’t doing much to detain this gap from growing farther. This article clearly connects to our topic of the week Is America living up to our ideals ? because it go into deep of how the unequal the government is giving more taxes to the poor and less to the rich adding more growth to the gap in between the rich and the poor. The evidence that I have that prove this text is credible is that it was written by a journalist in the New York Times. A major news company that would not post something on true because a lot of people are depending in this company to deliver the news that is occurring around the world. If false information given by this major news company it would lead to them losing money and viewers. Andrew Gelman uses statistics in his articles to prove his point of view. This is shown when he states “...the gap between the rich and the poor was a problem that needed to be fixed, 52 percent said yes, while 45 percent regarded it as an acceptable part of the economic system. Today, those numbers are reversed: Only 45 percent see the gap as in need of fixing, while 52 percent don’t ”.This back’s up Gelman’s point of inequality between the rich and the poor. Gelman also uses an expert to make his statement more credible “Fewer Americans See U.S. Divided Into ‘Haves,’ ‘Have Nots’, which showed not only that the number of Americans who see American society as divided into haves and have-nots” this quote Gelman took was from William Galston one of the advisers of the president. If Andrew Gelman were to be in our class he would disagree with our topic because in his eyes america is not living up to its ideals in equality they are only taking rich people into consideration and forgetting about the majority which are the poor american’s.
ReplyDeleteThe New York Times article “Republican Intensify Drive to Win over Jewish Voters” by Lizette Alvarez mainly speaks about techniques used by the Republican Party in order to win over specific groups of democratic voters over to the republican campaigns. The Jewish crowd is a group that is being targeted. This article connects to this week’s topic in class “Is America Living Up to Our Ideals” because the American political systems and technique’s back then are totally different then they are in our current generation and their has been a leap in actions that political parties have done to get electoral votes. The article “Republican Intensify Drive to Win over Jewish Voters” by Lizette Alvarez is definitely credible not only because it was published by the famous and reliable New York Times newspaper but also because the article shows statistics and detailed evidence to back up the claims. The writer of the article Lizette Alvarez also presents the audience with support to her argument and this is proven when she says “A study of Jewish voters in Florida conducted early this month” and this shows signs of not bias claims but of statistical studies that back up her argument. If Lizette Alvarez was to be a student at our wheels senior civics class I believe she would claim that America is not living up to its ideal just because of the fact that she demonstrates the techniques used by a specific political party, I believe that her facts do not match up to the facts of our past. I believe that Micheal J. Sandal would have argued that based on the article “Republican Intensify Drive to Win over Jewish Voters” by Lizette Alvarez , American ideals are not represented in this situation.

This NY Times article named “ Its Not Just About the Millionaires” by Adam Davidson is about how the corporate tax rate is too high which is affecting the rich , the poor , the middle class all around. This article also emphasizes that the higher the corporate tax rates(a tax imposed on domestic or foreign corporations that are engaged in business activities)affects many things such as less jobs, smaller economy, less hiring and even less investing. This text connects to this weeks topic because its talking about how taxes don't only affect the poor but they can also hurt the rich in various ways. This text is credible because is a source from the NY Times a well known newspaper around the New York. also the author of this text Adam Davidson is the co-founder of NPR's Planet Money, a podcast, blog, and radio series heard on “Morning Edition,” “All Things Considered” and “This American Life.” The author of this article uses strong evidence by saying that the C.E.O (Chief Executive Officer) was demanding on charging higher taxes on the millionaires, but it wouldn't make sense since the billionaires already pay $200,000 in taxes. According to this article the economy will rise but they can't just rely on the rich’s bank accounts. The author of this text would agree with Mesquita because since they government is providing all these good things for us such as medicare and providing just a good welfare for the american citizens were just pay the taxes. I also think Davidson would disagree with Mesquita because not only should the rich be taxed, they already get taxed enough and when the economy goes bad it's now affecting them too not only us. Mesquita would kind of disagree because Mesquita is saying how taxing the poor people more than the rich but Davidson is saying that the corporate taxes not only affect the poor but the rich too because they already pay very high taxes. I think Mezquita would agree because according to Davidson “Most reform proposals suggest gradually eliminating the most popular tax deductions, like mortgage interest rates ($120 billion per year) and workplace health insurance ($200 billion per year). Regardless, most economists acknowledge, and most politicians privately concede, that the middle class will have to give up some benefits (Social Security, Medicare)”. Mesquita was also saying something similar to this because we pay high taxes but in return we get all these good things such as medicaid and social security.

In the article that iread named “Ask the Experts -- How Will Citizens United Affect 2012?”Published September 27 2012. In this article it states how the rich people are giving away money to politics to go against the other candidate and it also states who is giving away money to what side. In this article it gives away a little description about the person who is giving away the money which gives you a sense of why the person is money to that candidate. In the text found it the participants talk about how they think the money that is given is going to be used. This text relates to what we have read and learned this week since it’s doing the things that America ideas are based on for example people are giving away money to the person that they clearly want to win and represent them. This would then relate to republicanism in the fact that people are voting for a leader that they would like to see in power. This also show freedom of speech in that people are say that they are going to give away money to that candidate This source is credible because the site is a center for responsive politics and if it gives away wrong information it would lose some of it’s credibility. The author uses does not really use strong evidence due to the fact that it just states people who are going to give money to a specific side of the the candidates whether it’s the Republican side or Democratic side. The author of this text would agree with the author of this week text would agree with the author of the article found because they would both agree that a leader can not run a government on it’s own let alone a nation. Both of the author would agree on the idea of republicanism and being allowed to pick a person that would lead you and make most of the decisions for you. Also use the money that you are paying in taxes for something that will benefit only the rich but also the poor.
ReplyDeleteThe nytimes article I read talks about how Mitt Romney wants to win over the Jewish voters. In 20o8 the Jewish voters gave Obama 78 percent of their vote.TheRepublicans are making commercials about getting Jewish votes and want to continue to erode Obama's popularity in the Jewish community.7O percent of Jewish voters plan to vote for Obama and 25 for Romney. The Republicans hope that the Jewish vote for them instead of Obama. The text connects to this weeks topic because the text we read talks about the interchangeables, influentials, and essentials. Both Obama and Romney want the vote of the Jewish. That is a big percentage for the elections. This text is credible because it is from an important news source. The author presents strong evidence. There is statistics for the percentage of voters for Obama and Romney. An example is that "19 percent of Jewish voters are republicans according to a March survey by the American Jewish Committee."The author of my text would say that the coalition is important for both candidates because that will determine whether they win or ont. The author of the class text would say that the Jewish are important for both candidates who are runnig for president.

The article I read this week was called “In Texas Conviction, an Immigrant Rallying Cry.” This article was about an illegal immigrant from Mexico named Rosa Jimenez. Rosa Jimenez was incarcerated for 10 years for allegedly stuffing paper towels down an infant she was in care of, ultimately leading to his death. Rosa Jimenez maintains her innocence and refuses to say that she committed this crime. During trial, a forensic pathologist determined what caused the death of the infant, although the forensic pathologist was neither an expert in choking nor in pediatrics. Nor was the forensic pathologist the one that Rosa Jimenez’s lawyer paid for or sworn in. Although the real victim in this case is the toddler, Bryan Gutierrez, Rosa is also a victim. Sure, Rosa isn’t a citizen of United States of America, but she was deprived of her equality and the right to a fair trial, fair being the key word. In the trial, it almost seemed as though the court wanted her to go to jail. If she was found guilty, wouldn’t it be more just to deport her back to Mexico and let them handle it? So, is America living up to its ideals? I believe not. If everyone in America is equal, why was Rosa’s trial unfair? This piece, although nowhere near is this article related to the article in class, reminds me of the piece we read in groups. My group got the Forbes piece listing the richest presidents of all time. The piece challenged me to think the question; can a poor wo/man become president? This piece answered the question with the answer, no. No ‘poor’ wo/man can become president. Every president that was listed in the article by Forbes has had money either from their immediate family (mother, father) or from trust funds. Although it makes sense that you need money to be a president, in my opinion, it’s saying that nobody without money can run. This source is credible because it is from the New York Times. The New York Times is a big news corporation with a reputation that cannot be harmed. The source also contained quotes from the victim’s mother, Rosa herself and the Mayor of Mexico. I don’t really think that the author from the Forbes piece would have anything to say to the author of this piece due to their topic of choice.

ReplyDeleteIn this article, religious Islamic groups in the United States are being socially discriminated as Muslims believe they aren’t being listened to because of their religious diversity. Up until now, there have been many videos on the internet and propaganda in the Subways of New York that discriminate Islamic as being “savages”, this type of discrimination is unconstitutional as every human is protected equally under law and ironic because this country was founded by many immigrants. Furthermore, this article talk about how this large group of Islamic people have a small say in government due to the fact that a large part of the nation is still aware of terrorist attacks and terrorist influence in American soil, making individuals be conceited about being a pure white American and putting down other racial ethnics.
ReplyDeleteThis article relates to the text “Restoring Free Speech in Elections” which was written by Joel M. Gora, because both talk about how companies and organization can talk freely about politics through use of propaganda and other forms of communication to the publics. This eventually leads to conflicts as many groups take it offensively and think that the United States government is giving too much power to organizations to politically talk about ethnics groups in order to follow the “American tradition” to be a citizen. Furthermore this idea connects to the class’ discussions and lessons because this form of propaganda is abusing the 1st amendment to speak out publicly and saying things at the wrong time, making other ethnic groups seems as terroristic individuals.
This source could be credible as this news publisher has been around since the early 1980’s, along with the three decade old company, it is also a national news reporting channel which shows the reputation this news broadcaster has gained over the decades. Among this, the journalist discusses reliable and formal evidence to back up her article.
The journalist does present strong evidence as he talk about about the desperation and discrimination that the group of individuals faces, the journalist also connects this problem with the Bill of Right’s 1st amendment because it is a law and the government has to follow it’s ideology behind the law, which tends to be the freedom of speech. The Journalist also indicates that both human and industries are protected under this first amendment, clarifying that the he deeply analyzes the law by connecting it to laws that also protect industries that provide propaganda.
The author of my text would say that he would agree with Joel M. Gora’s statement that he leans more to the side that government has more power and gives more power to the larger industries because they provide surplus amounts of money for political reasons. Joel Gora’s opinion will also indicate the faults of the government choice to give more power to industries for propaganda, and under law companies can discriminate ethnics (which was talked about in this article).
According to the Joel M. Gora’s ideology that the government is overusing the 1st amendment to discriminate religion, the Journalist would also indicate that large wealthy industries are using this amendment to their advantage to gain and/or help a political for a government elective vote from the people that oppose certain groups in America. On top of that, the Journalist would lastly agree because although American Government allows freedom of speech, it gave it to industries without some sort of restriction.

Louis XIV, known as the sun king, lasted for 72 years, longer than that of any other know king European sovereign. Louis XIV became king at the age of four after his father death. Louis XIV broke with tradition and astonished his court by declaring that he would rule without any help. Louis XIV view as a person who represented god on earth. Louis XIV launched the war of Devolution (1667-1668), invading the Spanish Netherlands.
ReplyDeleteThe text about King Louis XIV connects to "The Dictator's Handbook" because they both talked about monarchy, "rule by one". Both text talk about the different kind of class and the rights that each class have. Both text talked about money. "Money it is said is the root of all evil". Louis XIV only tax the poor people and not the rich people. Louis wanted to keep the rich family's in his side.
I got me information form history.com. The website is has an email and phone number so if you see a mistake on a text you reading you can call them to check if they did a mistake or if you are wrong. This is helpful because that anyone can add information on the blog. I also trust this website because
There is strong evidence about Louis XIV been monarch. Louis belief that he was chose by god to rule his people (Divine Rights). Louis XIV also believed that he was a "God's grift", his name came form that belief. Louis XIV didn't want anyone to rule next to him, he want to be the only one in charge.
The authors of the text of Louis XIV would talk about how Louis policy would be similar to the "The Dictator Handbook". He might connect some policy that a government might have to Louis XIV monarchy. He also might say that Louis was scare to give a lot of rights to lower class people because of fear of been replace.
The author of the class text say might argue that king Louis XIV was a dictator. The author of "The Dictator's Handbook" can connect information about both text to argue that Louis was similar to a dictator during his time. Evidence that the author he might use is that a dictator only care about a certain group.

Now, with less than seven weeks until Nov. 6, it's likely the candidates will look to their top fundraising states for some extra cash. For both men, that means heading back to California, the state that's been the top fundraising locale for each of them -- producing $39.4 million for Obama, accounting for 20 percent of his contributions of more than $200, and $23.9 million for Romney, making up 11 percent of his. As a result this helped president become president.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.opensecrets.org/news/2012/09/location-location-some-states-still.html
DeleteThis week i found the article “ location, location: some states still up for grabs, but money chase leads else where” i found it interesting because in class we were discussing how do president and running up president get there money. And they get there money from other sources such as big companies or funds. "Now, with less than seven weeks until Nov. 6, it's likely the candidates will look to their top fundraising states for some extra cash. For both men, that means heading back to California, the state that's been the top fundraising locale for each of them -- producing $39.4 million for Obama, accounting for 20 percent of his contributions of more than $200, and $23.9 million for Romney, making up 11 percent of his". This is an example of how the president and the running up president get there money. This is a crediable sources because is coming from michelle martinelle and is a blog that have sources from other people. I agree with the source because in class i learned that president obama get the most fund money and then romney cane in second but obama has wasted more then half of all his money. The more money the candidates had the better chance tey have of wining.
The NY times article "Spain Unveils Sweeping Budget Cuts" is about how bad budget are being cut off. And its causing a bad repartition on the U.S. economy its more like a crisis happening. The text connects to this weeks topic because the article explains how the economy/budget is affecting the U.S. and many people. Also the article is talking about how other people budget is being cut down but meanwhile their other that has their money frozen for about 3 years. This article is credible because the NY times is a big newspaper company and well known people and this article be read by millions of people and its also been around for many years. The author would agree that the government is having to much power and is trying to control the economy and peoples budget. In some way they want to help but the help they trying to provide is not good enough. The author of the class would agree that the government has to many power over the money of the country and wants to control the back and forward transaction of the demand of the money and wants to be demanding other peoples money.
ReplyDeleteThe article “Ford and Toyota to Work Together on Hybrid System for Trucks” was basically about the automobile companies, Ford and Toyota, joining forces to create are hybrid truck and working together as business partners. In civics class this week we were talking about republicanism and who truly has the power the rich or the poor. Unions and companies are also seen as people, having the companies as people makes it harder for the real normal people to have a voice. These two companies merging make it even less possible for people to have a voice because these are two very popular and prosperous companies. The authors opinion on the article is a positive one, you can tell it is because of a quote he uses in the last paragraph of the article, “This is the kind of collaborative effort that is required to address the big global challenges of energy independence and environmental sustainability” making it obvious that he believes that the merging of these two companies would be very beneficial. I believe the author of this article would say that there is a segway to the true definition of republicanism , meaning that he believes that companies who are thriving and successfully wealthy have the right to merge if the reason for their merging if “ beneficial ” to others.
ReplyDeleteThe article; “Ford and Toyota to Work Together on Hybrid System for Trucks” is a credible source because it is from the New York Times. The New York Times is a very well known popular news paper and if they lie in an article their reputation will pretty much be ruin. And I am pretty sure the consequence legally will not be anything enjoyable.
The article that I read was named “Since Suicide, More Resources for Transgender and Gay Students.” This article was about a new support group in Rutgers University for LGBT members. This group was created to help the LGBT community in Rutgers. This group gives them a place to talk and share their feelings to avoid another suicide, similar to the one that happened 2 years ago by former student Tyler Cleminti. The group creates ‘allies’ meaning they join together like minded people, to create new friends. The group advocates for the LGBT community and provides the message to everyone, “Hey, it’s alright to be gay or transgender.” This article reminds me of the American Ideal of republicanism. The group is offering a voice to kids who are ‘silenced’ because of bulling, whether it be physical bulling or homophobic slurs, the group protects them by offering advice. This piece reminds me of conversations we had in class last week, when you first introduced the topic of ‘American Ideals.’ We talked about how senators and representatives that we appoint are the voice of our community. This source is credible because, the source was from the New York Times and it contains hyperlinks and quotes from credible sources like Jenny Kurtz, the leader of the LGBT group in Rutgers University. New York Times is also an important company that will get severely hurt if their news turns out false it is also well respected and viewed by many American citizens.
ReplyDeleteLouis XIV is well known as the sun king who reign in power for 72 years. Louis XIV became king at the age of four after his father King Louis XIII passed away. Louis XIV believed in monarchy which means that people should be ruled by one person and that person have absolute power. Louis XIV started the war of Devolution in 1667-1668 by invading the Spanish Netherlands.
ReplyDeleteThe text about King Louis XIV connects to "The Dictator's Handbook" because they both talked about monarchy which mean rule by one. Both article talks about the different kind of class and the position that each class is made to stand out to be for example kings , nobles and serfs. Louis XIV only tax the poor people and not the rich people and of course the poor people had trouble paying those tax money and Louis took advantage of the situation.
I got my information from history.com. The website is credible because it has 11 million like on facebook and it gives you the option to email and called them just in case theres a valid mistake on the website. This is helpful because that anyone can add information on the blog and end up having wrong information on a project or a paper you are working on.
A strong fact about Louis being a monarchy was that he belief that he was choosen by god to rule his people which is an example of divine rights. Louis XIV didn't want anyone to rule after him, he wanted to be the only one in charge and have all the complete power to himself.
The authors of the text of Louis XIV would talk about how Louis policy would be similar to the "The Dictator Handbook". He might connect some situation in which a government once show an example of how Louis XIV used the belief of monarchy to control the people rights and to have all the power to themself. He also might say that Louis was scare to give a lot of rights to lower class people because of fear of being over thrown by them and lose his reign in power and end up being beheaded.
The author of the class text might say that king Louis XIV was a
dictator. The author of "The Dictator's Handbook" can connect information about both text to argue that Louis was similar to a dictator during his time in power.
The article that I picked was from the NY Times named M.T.A. Violated Rights of Group, Judge Says written by Benjamin Weiser, when the M.T.A violated the first amendment by say no to a sign that says “Support Israel. Defeat Jihad.” Which was a right of the first amendment of freedom of the press which goes with one of the topic that we learned in class about how the first amendment was not the way how it really is? I think this article is credible do to it was written by a someone in the NY Times it was a really court case that the MTA lose do to the first amendment there are hyperlinks that take you to other articles and a link to the writer of the article the only thing this have is other people comments on this article. this article is Relevant do to it talking about the topic we had in class and mostly what have we been talking about in class that the natural right of people of American were being violated and making the right of people going to the rich and less to the poor which is also mess-up up equality of the people in the united states I think joel M Gora would agree with be Benjamin Weiser article do to it talks about how the MTA are violating the rights of freedom of press and also Benjamin Weiser would agree with Joel M. Gora do to the same thing talking about how the first amendment is being violated

Based from the article I chose "Behind the People who Pay no Income Tax" written by Annie Lowrey. It basically talks about how that "half of American households do not pay federal income tax". This connects to this weeks topic by people having their own rights and becoming a rich or poor person in life. This shows that this article is credible because it's from the New York Times. One specific evidence that proves this is credible is that there's a person who wrote it and was published to the N.Y Times. The author of this article says " Tax Policy Center found, consists of households taking advantage of tax credits and other provisions, mostly support for senior citizens and low-income working families". This means that only senior citizens have the most support and not every other person. But from the class text from this week " by providing protection we happily pay TAXES".

Neil MacFarquhar is a New York Times reporter who discusses the issue on the disagreements between Obama, Mohamed Moris and Abed Rabbu Mansour Hadi on the rights of freedom of speech. The article, At U.N., Egypt and Yemen Urge Curbs on Free Speech was published on September 26, 2012. Moris disagrees with Obama’s beliefs that the people have the right to speak their mind even if people tend to disagree. Moris believes that the people should be satisfied as a newly democratic country (Egypt) as do Obama and Abed Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Moris as a new leader of Egypt wants the people to see him as a good representative in order to not be overthrown by the government for not meeting their needs. “Egypt respects freedom of expression, freedom of expression that is not used to incite hatred against anyone”(Mohamed Moris, 3).
ReplyDeleteAt U.N., Egypt and Yemen Urge Curbs on Free Speech relates to The Dictator’s Handbook because they both discuss the ideas on freedom of speech. The people should have the right to say what they believe in any part of the world and nobody especially the president or dictator should stop them from doing that because then they will lose their power and essentials . In The Dictator’s Handbook by Bruce Bueno De Mesquita reasons that dictatorship and democracy are in debate whether for which is best for the leaders or which works the best for the people. “’dictatorship’ really means a government based on a particularly small number of essentials drawn from a very large group of interchangeable and, usually, a relatively small batch of influentials. .. democracy , we really mean a government founded on a very large number of essentials and a very large number of interchangables , with the influential group being almost as big as the interchangeable group” (Bruce Bueno De Mesquita, 8).
The evidence in the text At U.N., Egypt and Yemen Urge Curbs on Free Speech is credible because it is posted on the new york times newspaper, a local company and resource that reports story’s that are trustworthy and reliable to the society and others. Neil MacFarquhar is a credible reporter because he has reported story’s for years about Muslims in North America, he highlighted their daily lives. He is an author of two books, the most recent The Media Relations Department of Hizbollah Wishes You a Happy Birthday and The Sand Cafe.
Yes, Neil MacFarquhar does present strong evidence to support his argument on freedom of speech. His studies prove that freedom of speech is everywhere in a both positive and negative way. Just recently violence broke out since September 11,2012 on how a California man who named himself Sam Bacile created an anti-Islamic video last year about Muhammad being a womenizer, religious fraud, and child molester. It inflamed parts of the middle east. In relations to this latest news, MacFarquhar provides an example that perhaps may contain similarities. Mr.Moris president of Egypt states,“Insults against the prophet of Islam, Muhammad, are not acceptable. We will not allow anyone to do this by word or by deed.” He is not going to let a small group of people ruin his society, he needs to care about the rest of socety who as well have opinions and follow rules.
ReplyDeleteNeil MacFarquhar would say that the class text The Dictator's Handbook by Bruce Bueno De Mesquita brings controversy between democracy and dictatorship because they are different ruling methods. In one ruling the people have the say while in the other people have no say at all. Freedom of speech is a way to express yourself in a way to an extent that causes problems which is not wanted in a society of one. Who ever the leader is, they need to do their jobs right to prevent from being over thrown and losing their power.
Bruce Bueno De Mesquita, the author of The Dictator's Handbook would say about At U.N., Egypt and Yemen Urge Curbs on Free Speech that the Presidents of the countries, the United States, Egypt, and Yemen all need to come to an agreement. Freedom of speech needs and should be the same all around the world. It should not be any different from another. Democracy is an elected choice in these countries. A democracy is a system of governemnt ruled by the people. Freedom of speech is a universal value.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/23/business/ford-and-toyota-to-work-together-on-hybrid-trucks.html?_r=0
ReplyDeleteThe following text “Ford and Toyota to Work Together on Hybrid System for Trucks” by Nick Bunkley describes how two car brands get united to work on an idea that they came up with to build a hybrid system for trucks. This article connects to the class text we are reading this week because one part of the class text talks about that nothing can be done by only one person. In other words, team work has to exist somewhere in a job where more than one person is needed. For example, the class text states, “All of these notions are flat out wrong because no emperor, no king, no sheikh, no tyrant, no chief executive officer (CEO), no family head, no leader whatsoever can govern alone” (1). This quote sticks to the same idea as the article above because Nick Bunkley demonstrates that Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president for research and development, states, “By working together, we will be able to offer our customers more affordable technology sooner.” They’re basically saying that we sometimes need another hand, not everything can be done just by one person. Therefore, in order to make everything go well and smooth without any problems, you must find an ally to help you out, just like Ford and Toyota looked for each other to work together. In other words, both Ford and Toyota want to make a profit and for that, they must have a high demand. Increasing the use of technology and trying to make it affordable is another reason why both brands arew working together. Basically, Bunkley is demonstrating that the topic he has chosen to discuss about should be interesting to others, especially by including some statistics into the article. The author of my chosen article would most likely agree with the class text from this week because both pieces of writing focus on the idea of achieving goals with an ally on the side is very helpful. Also, even though absolute monarchies had total power over everyone, they needed help from somebody because absolute monarchies weren’t going to be able to control everyone they were in charge of. For example, the class text states, “No one rules alone, no one has absolute authority. All that varies is how many backs have to be scratched and how big the supply of backs available for scratching”. In other words, in most of the things individuals do, there is a very high chance we will need support from others. The author of the class text from this week would say to my article from this week would definitely feel a positive feeling because the article shows that working as allies were going to take both Ford and Toyota somewhere achievable and helpful for their companies. For example, Mr. Mulally states, “This is the kind of collaborative effort that is required to address the big global challenges of energy independence and environmental sustainability,” This demonstrates working together will benefit both Ford and Toyota in accomplishing their challenges together, leading towards the next steps that has to be taken in order to succeed what Ford and Toyota want to achieve. Overall, working together is a way to accomplish goals and both pieces of literature are heading towards the same idea of getting things done by working together.
The article that I read was “Since Suicide, More Resources for Transgender and Gay Students.” This article emphasizes about a new support group in Rutgers University for LGBT members. This group was created to help the LGBT community in Rutgers. The LGBT group gives them a place to talk and share their feelings to avoid another suicide, similar to the one that happened 2 years ago by former student Tyler Cleminti. The group creates ‘allies’ meaning they join together as minded people, to enforce and create new friends within each other and other students going through the same problems and sexually orientated issues. The group advocates for the LGBT community and provides the message to everyone, “Hey, it’s alright to be gay or transgender.” This article reminds me of the American Ideal of republicanism. The group is offering a voice to kids who are ‘silenced’ because of bullying, whether it be physical bullying or homophobic slurs, the group protects them by offering advice. This piece reminds me of conversations we had in class last week, when you first introduced the topic of ‘American Ideals.’ We talked about how senators and representatives that we appoint are the voice of our community. Ariel Kaminer states “Ms. Kurtz said one of the big priorities of her job was to “create allies” — people whose identities do not correspond to any of the initials in her portfolio, but who consider themselves friendly to the cause or causes and want to learn more about how to help.” This represents how the LGBT group clings together in order rise above and support each other like a government. This also connects to republicanism because the people who are not heard or looked upon create a force in order to not only promote their points but to also show the other individuals that its okay to fight back and its okay to speak out when something isn't agreed upon or when changed need to be made. The New York is also a well known organization which wouldn't risk their reputation.
ReplyDeleteThe article that I chose to read is called “The poor could be strong swing vote” by Rev.Jesse Jackson. The article discussed the importance of the poor citizens in United States and how, together, they can be politically powerful. This article by Rev.Jackson connects to Chapter 1 of The Dictator’s Handbook because this article shows that every ruler of a country needs people to help them run efficiently. In the case of this article the candidates running for president need the poor because they represent a major population of the votes in the United States. The source I got this article from is credible because the newspaper company that published this article, The Chicago Sun-Times is an American daily newspaper published in Chicago. The paper first began in 1948 and is a modernized version of an original newspaper named Chicago Evening Journal, which first published in 1844. The Chicago Sun-Times currently has many writers and editors in their staff who are winners of the Pulitzer Prize. The newspaper is recognized for its journalistic qualities. Rev.Jesse Jackson presents a strong argument to prove that the poor are a strong vote. Specifically, Rev.Jackson discusses about his past experiences of growing up in a struggling household and running for presidency in 1984. Both The Dictator’s Handbook and The poor could be a strong swing vote offer the same idea of every government ruler needs help. In The Dictator’s Handbook,de Mesquita and Smith said about Louis XIV that “He was certainly on of the preeminent rulers of his or any time. But he didn't do it alone.” This shows that while Louis XIV was a powerful and respected ruler, he did not become what he was simply by luck. In fact, Louis XIV had an inner circle who helped him run France. In The poor could be strong swing vote Jackson wrote that “....if [the poor] show up in large numbers, they can transform an election...” Together, both articles show that every government, even a dictatorship, is ran by help.
ReplyDeleteThe article “Ford and Toyota to Work Together on Hybrid System for Trucks” was basically about the automobile companies, Ford and Toyota, joining forces to create a hybrid truck and working together as business partners.
ReplyDeleteThis text relates to the class topic because it builds upon the idea of "ideals." These two companies are making it for that their trucks would become more efficient and sustainable making it better for everyone and everything involve. It taking a step to revolutionizing the way trucks are made and their purpose.
The quote “By collaborating, Ford and Toyota hope to reduce the costs and development time of such work and keep hybrid trucks from becoming too expensive or lacking in performance” is powerful evidence that supports the enforcement of hybrid trucks. The quote is explaining how they will make cheaper, sustainable , efficient trucks so that they could be accessible to everyone. If sustainable trucks become affordable to people many will buy. Some may even trade their old non-sustainable truck for these, this factor would be great because it comes out being a win -win situation for everyone. You get affordable trucks that are good for the earth and the people living in it.
The author of this text Nick Bunkley and the author of " The Dictator's Handbook" would agree with each other because they both talk about power and obtaining it. Though they both talk about power in a very different way, it is still the basic idea of the two text. For example it the text "The Dictator" it talk about monarchs and dictators and them ruling over many. Yes it is a great thing what Ford and Toyota are doing but the real reason why they are doing it is for that they could gain more power in the automobile industry. They comprehend that if two major companies merge a become an even greater corporation, there are going to be less competitors and easier to sell. Plus they would get a bigger audience to sell their products to, which means making them a lot of profit and them being in the lead of the automobile industry.
The article; “Ford and Toyota to Work Together on Hybrid System for Trucks” is a credible source because it is from the New York Times. The New York Times is a very well known popular news paper and if they lie in an article their reputation will pretty much be ruin. And I am pretty sure the consequence legally will not be anything enjoyable.
The article i found is called “Exeter students take stand against bullying”, which talks about a group of student in Exeter High school who have a anti-bullying movement club in their school to raise awareness about the issues of bullying that have been becoming an increasing problem throughout the nation.
ReplyDeleteThis article connects to this weeks topic “Is America living up to its standards?” especially to the topic of Capitalism, because in capitalism we have the right to start our own business and take ownership of the company with a limit amount of Government involvement. However the students in these school who are involved in the anti-bullying movement are using fundraising throughout the whole year to raise a anti bullying movement week to focus only on the the issues of bullying with little assistance of the principal.
This article is credible because it comes seacoastonline.com which is news site, which focuses on the internal positivity of the nation like the anti-bullying movement at the Exeter High School. They most affect on issues that affect the south ranging from weather to the new projects being made to help the community.
In the article the author quotes one of the member of the club who said “We are looking to give individuals in our community, specifically students, the tools to prevent bullying and give each one of them the courage not to stand by and watch bullying take place but stand up and truly make a difference.” These students are clearly trying to prevent the issue of bullying of happening in the school by providing what you can do if you ever in the situation. These students also use fundraising in a fun manner doing activities like sending compliments to a friend. “During lunch periods at EHS, students can purchase Compliments for $1 and send a compliment to a friend.” These member are using the fundraising not only to get profit for other events but also to get the high school members to become more socially active with each other in a positive by giving each other compliments.
