The weekly assignment consists of five parts:
1) Read the assignment. This week's reading is from We the People. It is Chapter 2, and you can find it here. If you want to print it out, you can after school.
2) Take Cornell Notes on the reading. I will collect these notes on Friday in class.
3) Find another credible source on the internet that connects to the reading above or to the class topic from this week ("What are the American political ideals"). You can use any of the sites I have listed on the right, or more general news sites like nytimes.com.
4) After you read the source that you find, answer the following questions as a blog entry below:
- Write a summary sentence for the text you found.
- How does the text connect to that week’s topic or to the other text you have read?
- What evidence do you have that the text you found is credible?
- Does the author present strong evidence to support his/her argument? Provide an example.
- What would the author of your text say about the class text from that week?
- What would the author of the class text say about your text from that week?
Keep in mind that everyone else will see what you write below, so please keep it professional. This post is due Thursday, 9/20, by 5:00pm.
5) Come to class on Friday ready to discuss the reading and the text you found!
If you need support or have questions, my office hours are Monday and Wednesday from 3:15-4:15 in Room 229.

ReplyDeleteBill Schams american crossroads. By leigh ann caldwell, Is about how President obama features two small business owners sayin he's bad for businesses. And "how he's increased our taxes, He's increased our health care expenses , and how there's a reason there areint more jobs. This text is relavent to justice because justice is also talking about jobs back in 2007 in florida how other got payed more then others ,They both have diffrent opinion President Obama is increased taxes and health care. Michael Sandals disagree and he is trying to find out why employee are getting payed more then other employee like what the text say from Michael Sandals "in 2007, CEO at major US corporation were payed 344 times the pay of average worker on what grounds,if any, do executives deserve to make that much more than their employees? And leigh ann caldwell disagree on how obama has increased our taxes and he is bad for businesses. This text is credible becuase is from the page CBS.com and it was post by by leigh ann caldwell, September 18,2012 10:25 am. Bill Schams show strong evidence by saying " obama has made alot a lot of bad decision, He is treat us like we're his enemy. Bills Schams will most likely agree on michael sandals text and say people should be payed fairly and great amount of salary on everybody, becuase everybody will like to get payed good. Michael Sandals will most likely agree also on Bill Schams text becuase it true what President Obama have done, increasing tax and health care is not gonna help no body and he making thing harder for the community and the US citizens.
The article “teachers’ pension a big issue for Chicago” is about how the cut back on school funding is causing a huge crisis due to the fact Laurence Msall says that ‘the problem does not get easier by waiting. The problem gets bigger, and starts to become an insurmountable obstacle.’ This causes problems for the president since people believe that he is the one controlling an authorizing the pension cuts on the school. This article connects to our topic of Americas 6 main values by showing how the people show there control over their community by speaking out against the president and what they believe is justice to their current situation. I find this text credible because since it is a major news tittle, the New York Times, and it has many hyper links to other articles involved or share the same similar idea on the topic of politics and government. The author shows arguments by quoting what Laurence Msall says to the public and has connections to another hyper link connecting the topics of the article. The author would question the believe of how the people have a say in their community and how to act on their ideas and why does the president not get involved with the crisis if it involves the people if the United States of America. The author of the article would defend the people and judge who is actually considered “the people” if before they believed it was the rich white land owners that lived on the united states soil we stand in today.
ReplyDeleteBased on the article from the Los Angeles times, House passes Republican take on 'Buffett Rule' by Danielle Ryan. she writes that a bill has not been picked up yet untill november elections. This shows that they must wait for every person around that area votes. This is an example of natural rights of the individual. This connects to the opic of this week because us humans are equal and as one. As in the reading by Danielle there's a Rep. named Sander M levin. One way I think they chose him was by electing him and letting him fight for the people. This shows connections with constitutionalism and equality because the right of the individual is as equal as everyone in the world. That relates to having the right to say ( freedom of speech ). One piece of evidence that this piece is credible because its from the LA times. Another piece is from Constitution. The voting rights act of 1965. This had to deal with each different colored person in the U.S. Especially the African Americans. In order for them to vote they had to be able to pass the literacy tests and poll taxes. But they ended up with little political power. The author of the article and constitution would take a poll and send the votes and elect a rep. and would fight for each human being and their property they own. But most importantly how us humans receive independence while the government is on our way. They should just protect our rights and not our independence.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.history.com/topics/19th-amendment
ReplyDeleteThe following source called “19th amendment” is based on the idea of the suffrage for women, now that by that time the amendment of the suffrage of men was accepted. This source connects to this week’s topic because this generates the idea of equality. In other words, equality has the following purpose: the idea of “the people” that are created equal has expanded over time. This connects to the main idea of the source because both men and women should have the right to have equal rights. All individuals were born with the natural rights, meaning no one is allowed to remove natural rights from anybody. This text is credible because history.com is a very popular website and channel on television. If some day they ever give false information to readers and viewers, people from that day on will never believe on anything that the History channel publishes. The author of my source would say to the class text from this week that their idea of equality is correct because both the class text and source focuses on the idea of equality. The source would also agree upon this week’s topic because equality is one of the American values. This same reason applies to the answer for the response from the author of the class text to my source. Overall, both pieces of writing connect to the same idea of equality. Both genders should always have the same, equal rights because we are all human beings at the end of the day.
Susan Saulny's article "Unemployed and Overlooked Young Adults Are A Question Mark" is about young adults roughly in the age of 18-29 who do not have or are not pursing a college degree, or are unemployed. This text connects to this week's topic of "What are the American political ideals". In this article young adults are stuggling to maintain themselves economiclly, but politcally they still have individual power. These young adults are still able to to vote on the upcoming election and get their voices herd. In the Ms. Saulny's article she interviews Mat Ely a 25 year old restaurant worker which she states, "He is opposed to the Republican plan for tax cuts for upper income earners, but does not think Democrats have good ideas, either. “They’re all a bunch of rich people that I really don’t feel like care about me anyway,” Ms. Saulny backs up her article by explaining the struggles of real life young adults and how they use factors in their life such as freedom and liberty to motivate them for success. In the article Ms. Saulny writes, "The report suggested that being “persoally and explicitly asked” is perhaps the most important catalyst that motivates young people without college degrees to take political action" What Ms. Saulny would say about our class this week is that people do have the right to express their ideas and choose who they want to represent them, no matter their economic stability. The author of the class text would agree with Ms. Saulny becuase she is basically saying the same as him but just using real life examples to back up her arguement
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/20/us/more-expected-to-face-penalty-under-health-law.html?ref=politics&_r=moc.semityn.www
ReplyDeleteThe article "More Expected To Face Penalty Under Law" by The Associated Press is based on providing every legal resident of the U.S. with health insurance. This means that this law does not apply to immigrants which does affect them in a negative way. Which then links into making the U.S. society weaker. This source relates to this week's topic of "What are the American Political Ideals" because this law falls into constitutionalism which controls the society. This text is credible because it was published on the NY Times website which is very popular not only online but on newspapers as well. If this source is not credible, people wouldn't be reading and relying on daily news from the NY Times every morning. The Associated Press doesn't really provide a strong arguement because the health law is only being stated and populations are being compared. The author of my text would agree with the health law being constitutional and that it is just another American value.
This week I looked at the article “The Annenberg Guide to the United States Constitution”. This source is more like an informational tool than an article; it states The Preamble and the Articles, and all The Amendments. Not only does it state the The Preamble and the Articles, and The Amendments but it also states what it means that way you or anyone else can understand it better.
ReplyDeleteIn the reading We The People chapter 2 it is stating beliefs about the government and about the “duties” of the people. This source that I have chosen relates to this reading because it can be used to help anyone who is confused or to explain some of the points that have been made in this reading. I think this source is also related to the reading from We The People ch2 because for people who don’t know anything about the Constitution or the Amendments this can be used as a tool to give them knowledge and background on the topic. By knowing what those things truly mean because they are a part of the American Ideals can help them grasp what the reading is really trying to say.
The source that I found doesn’t show much evidence that proves that this is credible. But when you look at the other things and topics the site contains such as the Constitution guide, other current events, today in history, books and timelines proves that this is credible. Also when you read the Amendments you can tell that they are all correct, that would be another reason why this source shows it is credible. If the people who created this website just made things up about the Amendments and the Preamble and the Articles they can get into trouble with the government and they would have a lot to lose because people would know that those things that they stated are in fact wrong. On the other hand I also think this source isn’t credible in a way because there is no author or any other links connecting you to other topics related to the ones stated.
The author of the source (The Annenberg Guide to the United States Constitution) I found would find some points in the text from this week (We The People ch2) rather interesting and relevant but I think that this author would disagree with some of the beliefs others believed. For ex: “From the classical perspective citizenship should emphasize duties, not rights.” (pg 13 p4) I think the author would disagree with this because I think that he/she would think that it should be emphasized on rights not duties. Everyone has rights and shouldn’t be forced or told what to do. Another statement I think the author would disagree with would “Classical republican thinkers also believed that members of a political community must be fundamentally alike. Great disparities in wealth or differences in culture, religion, or morals cause conflict among people rather than encouraging them to work together for the common good.” (pg 13 p1). I think my author would disagree with this because members in a community can have different beliefs they don’t all have to be the same and there wouldn’t be much conflict. Yes there would be disagreements but the people would be able to coexist as one, and a great example of that is some communities in the world today. I think he/she would argue that not everyone is the same or has the same beliefs.
I think the author from We The People would argue the same thing that I did or at least something similar. I think this author would think that “The Annenberg Guide to the United States Constitution” could help some people get some background knowledge on the Amendments and the Articles. I also think that the author form We The People would relate some of the points stated to his/her text.
http://www.annenbergclassroom.org/page/a-guide-to-the-united-states-constitution
The article “On Torture and American Values” from the New York Times it talks about how President Bush was condoning secret prisons where the prisoners would be tortured and killed. This topic connects with this week’s topic because our topic for this week was American ideal. The American ideals is the same thing as American values; the ideas that shape America. This relates because people are questioning the American values because of what president bush did and asking what does America really stand for. In article it says “The Bush administration has dishonored that history and squandered that respect. As an article on this newspaper’s front page last week laid out in disturbing detail, President Bush and his aides have not only condoned torture and abuse at secret prisons, but they have conducted a systematic campaign to mislead Congress, the American people and the world about those policies.” This quote shows the disappointment the people had at President Bush and his administration for doing something so horrible without the consent of the people. Author of this article would say that presidents bush condoning of secret prison is an awful and unacceptable representation of the American values and what America truly stands for. This article is credible because it has hyperlinks , credible names and quotes said by others.
ReplyDeleteThe article i picked this week has to do with natural rights and how it had evolve throughout the years, especially with negroes. White supremacies has been around for centuries where white American are above African American based on there race or even religion. Throughout the year when laws was being written government had looked at everyone or try to and make them all equal little by little. We now live in a society where every one has a right of freedom of speech so everyone is blind of the hard facts from centuries before of all the hard experience the black people went through to finally be looked at as equal rather then be separated. You had important people throughout history that change the way history is view now because of either there actions or they way of speech such as Martin Luther King JR , John Locke , Abraham Lincoln who all wanted to get the message out that everyone should be looked and created equal thats the only way. This article fits in perfectly with this week's lesson because it fits with the characteristics of a democratic government, the ideal this article represent is equality in which some people's belief everyone should be looked at the same instead of being looked at differently. This article is credible because is from a PhD professor , has quote from different people such as MLk that lend to the change of history and the website is "org" meaning is relevant rather them being .com where any man on a "couch" could make. The PhD professor would not only agree with Michael J. Sandel but would use examples of what Sandel wrote in chapter 2 when it talked about natural right and basically the birth of this idea. Sandel would also agree with the PhD professor and use his example people as a way of how the world has involve and how the world has changed in the way people have learned about the past and witness the modern time.

ReplyDeleteThis week i read the article Pennsylvania Judges Keeps Voter ID Law Intact On It Way to Higher Court by Ethan Bronner. I found this article interesting because it talks about how the minority of poor people are “disproportionately deprived of the ballot”. This is similar to chapter 2 of justice because people natural rights weren’t being followed. In Justice john locke argued that “all are born with equal poltical rights. Ethan Bronner would have disagree with john locke when he said “The groups said the law, like those recently passed in 10 other states, was a Republican attempt to suppress participation of the less privileged, who tend to vote for Democrats”. i would disagree with Ethan Bonner and agree with john locke because poor people should be treated the same as the rich poor people. This article is crediable because it uses sources from the new york times and it uses court names.

ReplyDeleteIn the text John Locke; Natural rights to Life , Liberty and Property by Jim Powell explains in depth John Locke’s ideas and connection them to the ideas of the Constitution. John Locke expressed has the government is obligated to to serve the people and protect their rights. Jim Powell is a Historian who has been a libertarian in the Cato Institute (major Think tank for American libertarians) in Washington D.C with which he has been an associate since 1988. This text connects to “ We the People” chapter two , because the author of this text analyses how philosophers like John locke and Thomas Hobbes focused on the rights on the people such as their natural rights. They also believed that the government regardless of races, color or ethnicity should protect each individual's rights. This source is credible because Powell explains how presidents like Thomas Jefferson look up to John Locke's ideas on liberty because he felt that peoples rights such as life, liberty and property should be protected. Powell’s evidence is that Locke had inspire many libertarians ideals of the American Revolution. This is an important factor of his evidence because during the American Revolution philosophers were emphasizing the ideas of freedom and liberty. Powell would agree with the text“ We the people” because they added some ideas that locke had explained the principle of check and balances should be used to limit the governments power. This can be really important because limiting the governments power would go back to this idea of the social contract because the people have an agreement with the government. The author of “We the People” would also agree with Powell because he explains on how popular sovereignty derives from the agreement of the people which comes from the social contract and by limiting the government this would create a society. the author would agree with Powell because they mention the same of idea of If the people believe the government is violating their rights the people should have a right of revolution and create a whatever form of government they think best suits their needs.

In the article that I am reading its about Natural rights and
ReplyDeleteEquality. This article talks about the Natural Rights given to the
people by the God and also Says how Mr.M.T. Richardson said that "Man
are not created equal" which he says that some man are smarter than
others and some are stronger then others. This article connects to We
the People which I read because it talks about how the people have
their Natural Rights and also how they pick the government that would
not violate their rights so that the people could have more power then
the government because the people give the government power this is
called the social contract. Also in the article it talks about how
people value their natural rights. This article that I am reading is
reliable because it’s in the New York Times and also it is written in
1900. I think the authors article is already strong evidence because
it was written in 1900s. The author of my article which talks about
equality and natural rights makes a statement that’s Mr. M. T.
Richardson when he says “ That man are not created equal because they differ in mental qualities and strength and skill’. In the opinion of Mr. M. T. Richardson I disagree because I think that all man are created equally and the author from We The People would disagree with this opinion because he states the Declaration Independence and also says that it has to do with the Natural Rights which also says that man are created equal. The two authors of these article would both have a different opinion on the Declaration Of Independence and also about equality for people.

http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/29/are-there-natural-human-rights/
ReplyDeleteIn America, our natural rights are well known to be protected. We citizens have our freedom, rights, and our individuality. In some countries, they faced dictatorships. Countries such as Tunisia and Egypt dealt with the fear of not having the freedom of speech and barely any rights. However, Tunisia and Egypt took action as said in Michael Boylan’s New York Time article Are There Natural Human Rights? Both countries successfully protested and their leaders fled. Both Tunisia and Egypt realized that it was inhumane, not having rights? Not having the freedom of speech? And dealing with a government corruption? But it is not easy, for countries such as Yemen, Syria, and Libya who tried to do same with their leaders and led to a massive disappointment. Their leaders killed and imprisoned those who protested. In Boylan’s article, Boylan gives an example of a leader [Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi] brutally attacked his protesters; so bloody that the United Nations and NATO had to get involved. As others revolutionized for their rights, some successful and some not, the question is, are there REALLY natural human rights? Boylan mentions “human rights were invented by Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, and Hume, and are not ‘natural’ or ‘true’ as such, but rather an arbitrary social construction that applies only to societies that choose to adopt it –“. Boylan finishes this paragraph with “Under this scenario the concept of natural human rights is not a legitimate universal category by which to judge societal or individual conduct”. This amazes me because I believe that everyone deserves their natural rights, or everyone should HAVE their natural rights. Human rights do exist, however, nations can choose whether to follow it, or not. Boylan continues his article questioning is there natural human rights. As a professor of philosophy at Marymount University and has written a book titled “Morality and Global Justice: Justifications and Applications” in 2011, I believe that his article is credible. Boylan backs up his opinions with historic and recent examples to answer his very own question, Are there Natural Rights? Boylan would agree with Hobbes and Locke’s idea of natural rights. However, I think he would remain neutral on whether there are natural rights.

In the source that I had found it tells a person about how and what has happened to the natural rights, and mostly to woman. This man had missed the anniversary meeting but read reports about it. And had observed the people’s report anniversary meeting had aimed towards the idea of natural rights. He had held examples from the people’s reports from there and said “there are assuming promises” and said “there has been so much nonsense uttered on this topic” saying was wheres the meaning of natural rights and the abuse that has been done to the natural rights. This relates to chapter 2 page 15 because it talks about the meaning of nature first that then relates to natural rights and is showing the meaning that what we were born with is what no can’t take away from us or abuse towards us. The nature came first then anything, and is what we respect, and is the same as the natural rights should be treated. This aarticle is crediable because it uses sources from the new york times which is a reliable source.
The news reports that I read from The New York Time was about candidate Mitt Romney trying to defend what he said about 47% of the U.S citizens depending on the U.S government for aid and how this is affecting his camping. This article can connect to the part of the class reading that talks about the "common good" of the society. The evidences that support that this news article is credible are that it has president candidate Mitt Romney, times, dates, a location and a reference to Fox news. The things that authors us to support their evidence are quotes from Romney, dates of when the events happen and the places where the events took place. The authors from The New York Times , JIm Rutenberg and Ashley Parker, and Michael J. Sandel would agree that what Mitt Romney said was not for the "common good" of society. The authors for The New York Times said "...and trying to minimize the damage from the disclosure of another set of remarks from the fund-raiser..." The authors are stating that what Romney said was not only harmful to himself but was also not good for the "common good" for the society. Michael J. Sandel said "Only by working together in a common effort to promote the good of all could citizens maintain their republic and keep it free from the domination of others." He is saying that if a republic is trying to survive everyone must work hard and help each other.
ReplyDelete1. The text " John Locke And The Natural Laws And Natural Rights Tradition " by Steven Forde talks about how John Locke and Thomas Hobber had different views of the rights of people. Hobbes state " Men are free and independent, having a right to purse their own interest ". Hobbes also believes individuals have no limit when it comes to their rights even to not respect others individuals rights. John Locke argues, he says that all men are free and equal but they all have a limited (laws). John Locke believe that individuals have a duty to respect the rights of others unless their life is been threatened. John Locke also believed that people should limit the power of the government.
ReplyDelete2. The text " John Locke And The Natural Laws And Natural Rights Tradition " connects to the text we reading in class because John Locked inspired the American founding fathers. The founding fathers in the Declaration of Independence, speak of both natural rights and natural laws. John Locke believe that the people should have limit the power in the government and the United State was build on the theory of Locke, every men is born with natural rights. The Unites State separated form mother England because they didn't have a "voice" in the government to represent them.
3. I trust this text because it comes for National Endowment for the Humanities. NEH is a independent federal agency created in 1965. NEH is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States. NEH also serves and strengthens our republic by promoting excellence in the humanities and conveying the lessons of history to all Americans.
4. Steven Forde present good evidence strong to support to support both Locke and Hobbes theories. Steven Forde given good example of Locke believe, " Locke speaks of a state of nature where men are free, equal, and independent". Forde also give a good example of Hobbes believe, "According to Hobbes, one consequence of this is that the state of nature is a "war of all against all". Steven Forde evidence support his text.
5. Steven Forde would connect the text form class by saying say that John Locke influence the founding fathers of America. Locke believed that the people should limited the power of the National Government. Steven Forde would say that John locked helped build the United State.
6. The Author form the text we learning in class would say that Locke help build the united state and influence them to fight for their independent against Britain. The author would also say that civic virtue was started by John Locke, respect other or/and neighbor rights .

ReplyDeletehttp://influencealley.nationaljournal.com/2012/09/collins-backs-gay-immigration.php
I found this post in the National Journal , which talks about the statement from the senator of Maine, who claims she would would give gay immigrant married couples the same right as Heterosexual ones. A bill which she is the first one in her support. This article connects to the topic we learned yesterday which was the American Values. This article relates to equality, because the article is trying to make Gay married Couples have the same equal rights as Straight ones , basically they are trying to balance out that everyone is equal under god no matter what.
This article is credible, for the fact that it is from a website that has a lot of visits, because it has news on things happening around all the states in the nation. It also gives example on why the topic is beneficial in a positive or negative way. the author does present strong evidence to support his/her argument when he/she states "This important civil rights legislation would help prevent committed, loving families from being forced to choose between leaving their family or leaving their country." this quote can connect to individualism because it gives family the right to make a decision they are comfortable with.
I think the author would agree with page 7 in the section that talks about equality. Especially in the part where it says that every individual is born with political rights given from God, which can be used to defend the fact that every LGBT person should have the same rights as a heterosexual, I also feel the author would agree with section one from the 15th amendment and the articles of confederation because they talk about self value of a person, and that no one should be considered lower power , because of race, color or “previous condition of servitude.”
At first while reading the article "Segregation Prominent in Schools, Study Finds" By Motoko Rich, the one and only American value that had hit me at first was equality. Schools, neighborhoods and the Board Of Education was depriving Americans of the values we were promised. The article can be summarized down in one sentence: Poor kids, most likely minorities are segregated into poor schools, while Caucasian and the Asian communities are most likely found in more funded schools. Data collected shows that segregation among race is increasing. The co-author of the Civil Rights Project, Gary Orfeild said,"Extreme segregation is becoming more common," It is not only the author of the article, Motoko Rich who finds the schools segregating by race a problem, but also Raul Gonzalez, who is the director of legislative affairs and education policy at the National Council of La Raza, a Latino advocacy group. Gonzalez said "black and Hispanic parents did not necessarily say “I want my kid to be in an integrated setting.” Instead, he said, “they’re going to say I want my kid’s school to do better than what it’s doing.” After finishing the article I pondered about whether it was equality was the only ideal being questioned in this article. Although it is unfair that schools in African American or Latino neighborhoods are not funded as well as the schools in Caucasian and Asian neighborhoods and it questions the whether the American value of equality is placed in effect in this case, but also the American value of freedom of speech is being placed in action. This action of freedom of speech is shown when groups like the National Council of La Raza are formed to give a voice to the Latinos. Also people like Gary Orfeild and Raul Gonzalez give voices to the minorities who are in a sense silenced because of there monetary status. This source is credible because it contains quotes from credible people and also hyper links to re-direct me into pages that further explain Motoko Rich's argument. The author of this article (Motoko Rich) will agree with the author of We the people because while the author of We the people does not agree or disagree that America is following the values that they "claim" they obtain, he does admit, though, that those American values do exist.
ReplyDeleteThe article Texas gun case tests scope of Second Amendment found on the web site CNN is about how the supreme court has never really decided clearly saying that it’s an individual right to carry a firearm in the article it states “A lower court ruled that a federal law that took away husband Timothy Joe Emerson's gun in a bitter divorce case was unconstitutional because it violated the Second Amendment, an individual's right to own a gun.”This case was known as the U.S V. Emerson. Michael J. Sandel would agree with the law being unconstitutional since he believes that everyone is equal so then he wrote that “ Natural rights philosophy emphasizes the existence of inalienable rights to each person regardless of wealth , social status or birth.” Both of these authors would agree with each other and say that human rights also know as individual rights belong to the people and that no one is allowed to take that away from them. This article is credible because it’s a site baised on justice and news that people need to hear.

ReplyDeletein. This article states that “ those who are more unequal appear to have more mental illness, infant, mortality, obesity, high school dropouts, teenage births, and homicides. It is unequal because they have a better quality of life. This text connects to this week’s
topic because in the text we read it talks about human equality. John Locke said that all men are created equal. He believes that governments do not protect people’s natural rights. They do what they want when people agree to the social contract. I believe that this text is credible because it's from an important news source. The author has strong evidence to support his argument. One example is a book written by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett. The author of the text I

If the poor speak up they have to be heard by the government. The author from the class text would agree with the author from the article I chose. The text I researched “John Locke and the Natural Law and Natural Rights Tradition” by Steven Forde is based on the famous philosopher John Locke is mainly based on both the theory of John Locke and Thomas Hobbes on the idea of natural right. John Locke believes that there is a limit to the each individual’s natural rights and this is proven when Steven Forde says “he asserts that men in the state of nature are free and equal, and at liberty to do as they wish—but only “within the bounds of the law of nature.”
ReplyDeleteThe Text of the week “Justice” (Chapter 2) discusses the difference between natural rights and classical republic but also how both systems influenced our current society and the article “John Locke and the Natural Law and Natural Rights Tradition” by Steven Forde also talk about natural rights and the idea’s of the philosopher John Locke.
“John Locke and the Natural Law and Natural Rights Tradition” by Steven Forde is credible because it is recommended and trusted by the National Endowment For The Humanities and also copy rights are reserved.
The author Steven Forde does provide strong evidence to support his argument of both John Locke and Thomas Hobbes because he states “In Hobbes’s state of nature, men are free and independent, having a right to pursue their own self-interest, and no duties to one another.” This shows Thomas Hobbes theory on natural rights that people should only pay mind to their pursuit of happiness and not get in the way of others.
Steve Forde would most likely argue that John Locke’s theory of natural rights would have influence the independence of the United States from Britain. The United States was forced to separate it’s self from Britain because the U.S had no representatives in the Britain Parliament which was the representation of the people.
Michael J. Sandel would also agree with Steven Forde because od the simple fact that John Locke contributed to existence of the U.S with his beliefs.

The article I am reading about talks about natural rights and equality. The article I found was” Should This Woman Be Jailed by the U.S. For Resistance to Iraq War?” This article is talking about a woman called Kimberly Rivera a former fighter in the US army leaves the military without authorization. She began to distrust the war also her assistance in the war and being part of the US army. So she decided it was a good idea to leave the United States in 2007 and live in Canada with her children leaving the military without permission to avoid getting send back to fight in the Iraq war. She thought that leaving the United States and going to Canada will not allowed the United States to go and get her but she was wrong. Now she will find out if she will be deported to the United States where she will be immediately be put to jail for resistance to the Iraq War for 2-5 years. This article relates to the weeks topic because we are talking about people’s natural rights and freedom. I feel this article show how she is over using her power and is now risking her freedom. By violated her contract with the government because she signed to fight and protect the United States and she ended up leaving and not protecting us like she said she will. It’s not like she was forced to do it she volunteered to do it and knew what she was getting herself into. Additionally she had the freedom of speech which she disagreed with the government about her getting involved with the army and killing people. I find this article credible because it has many hyper links to other articles that share similar idea on the topic of human rights, has an author and peoples opinion written at the bottom. The author really does present a strong evidence of his argument because the article give enough information about what happen and how serious the judges are going to take this due to her children being in between. “An application to delay her deportation on humanitarian and compassionate grounds based on the best interests of her four children is currently pending”. This is important because they are postponing this issue because the government / judges don’t know what to do with Kimberly’s children. Kyra Stoddart will agree with Michael Sandals,” what ideas about civic informed the founding generation?” Because they both relate to natural rights, individual rights and human equality. Kyra Stoddart states “the right to refuse to perform military service for reasons of conscience is part of freedom of thought, conscience and religion, as recognized in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Sandals read “each individual possesses inalienable rights to “life, liberty, and estate [property] (6)”. Michael sandals will also agree with Kyra Stoddart because Kimberly had the courage to do what she thought was right even under certain circumstances and the consequences she will be serving. Using her freedom of speech she disagreed with the government and her natural rights life liberty and property to protect her.

The article “former officer gets five years for false arrest of black man” is discriminating and biased, with laws meant to protect the individual from equal opportunities, and the right to be protected under the law, there are times government fails to meet its own ideals/ expectation. According to this article, officer officials arrested a dark skinned colored man and the penalty of 36 hours behind bars. At the end of the court case, the 35 year old police officer was sentenced to 5 years behind bars for discriminating and breaking a civil rights law.
ReplyDeleteThe important fact that makes this arrest unconstitutional is the man had no arms and was solely based in the Stop And Frisk law, which gives the officer the official right to search an individual for suspicious reasons. This law breaks the ideal of individualism as government officials searched the man and arrested him for no reason, and claimed that the man was breaking the law. Overall the idea that society should provide equal rights and equal protection stated by the idea of individualism which connected to this article as both the officer and the laws are meant to go against the idea that human equality should be spread amongst equally.
Overall the authenticity of this article is valid because it has been written by a professional journalist who has a clear indication regarding the vast knowledge about civil right laws. This article is published by the Wall Street Journal which is nationally known and prestigious. Furthermore the publisher has been around since the late 1800’s.
The journalist of this article has a clear idea as to how the incident between the cop and the victim happened, adding on; the writer knows the situation because he explains how the Stop and Frisk laws operate, this author also relates to the civil rights era and how similar discriminations were presented in the 1960’s and the present day. The journalist writes, “U.S. District Judge William Kuntz said Daragjati had chances to change his behavior but chose not to – he has had two civilian complaints and three civil suits filed against him, all by black men.” The journalist strictly indicates the background information that people of colored were always socially discriminated and that Americans believed/ still believe on white superiority. Furthermore the journalist is stating that the government is corrupt by saying that the officer had no right to sentence a black man to jail without any reason, making the belief of individualism corrupt as officers of the law were harassing an innocent man without any reasonable consent.
The author of the article will say he is in shock as the journalist describes that the American constitution is not being followed, this is certainly true as the popularity of social discrimination still occurs. On top of the the unconstitutional laws that are being followed, racial slur could help the Author of “We the People” be in disgust because he is writing about how much constitutional ideals need to be followed.
The Journalist would certainly agree with the author’s description of the Constitution because the author describes the fundamental idea of why America fought for freedom. And now that they have the freedom, the journalist would ask, why live in a society where we are still controlled by another force that we actually voted for to protect us in the first place.

The source I found is about how most fast food restaurants are going to be required to post the calorie count of everything on the menu. The government is making this a health law because Americans need to know that a Big Mac contains roughly 700 calories before they buy it. This text connects to this weeks topic of " American political ideals" because the government believes that it is common good to let the people know how many calories are in the food that they eat. The Roman Republic would agree with this text because they believed in common good. Common good is basically doing whats best for the whole society. This source is credible because it is from a world-wide newspaper, The New York Times. What also makes this source credible is that the article has many links, the name of the author and even a short takeaway listening. Stephanie Rosenbloom states "... it will be impossible to chomp down on a Big Mac without knowing that it contains over 500 calories..." The Roman Republic and the United States government would agree that the people should know what they are going to eat before they eat it.

In the article "Election math: Ballots + New York = @#&*?! By Clyde Haberman speaks about Charles B. Rangel and Adriano D. Espaillat running for city councilmen. In other words an advocate for the people that are fundamentally alike.Haberman goes in depth in how messy the election have gotten in choosing a winner. This article connects to the class topic of the week ("what are the American political ideals ") because by Rangel and Espaillat running for city councilmen demonstrates how the people are extresesing the American ideology of republicanism , which is the right to vote for an advocate to represent you in government. Another way this article and the class topic relate is when Haberman states "On Monday , the Espaillat camp turned to a state judge to help sort things out". This demonstrates how the American ideology of constitutionalism being practiced how no body is above the government and also equality in having an opportunity to decent your self. This source is credible because it was taken out o the New York Times. A major news paper company that a lot of people rely in to get the information that goes on around the world . This company could not give false information to the viewers because they would be the ones loseing it's credibility and reliability on the source.Clyde Haberman went into about the voting situation when he states "Rangel and Espaillat out of more than 40,000 cast, at least 2,000 ballots remain to be counted " explaining the details that went wrong in counting each vote. The author of my article would agree to disagree with the class topic because yes America's ideology in government might be correct in his eyes but the question he might as is are we doing what we said we were going to do and what is written in the constitution.
ReplyDeleteThe article I read was called “Teachers’ Strike in Chicago Tests Mayor and Union” . This article was discussing how teachers in Chicago were practicing their freedom of speech by striking their work place because they felt they weren’t being valued equally. “You have a situation where the teachers feel totally and completely disrespected,” said Randi Weingarten . This reading obviously explains how Individualism and freedom of speech can lead a group of people or an individual to fight for what they want to persevere. Jay Carney the White House press secretary stated “His principal concern is for the students and families who are affected by the situation. And we hope that both sides are able to come together to settle this quickly and in the best interest of Chicago’s students.” This was directed about Obama. This shows while people are entitled to their freedom of speech it can always come with a price in which this case it is the students of Chicago's education. They were not able to attend class and many parents had to sign their children up in daycare because of the strike . In the end, the moral of this article is while the teachers are exercising an American right/value, people will always get effected, either positively or negatively. The article I observed was credible because it is from the New York Times therefor it is trusted by many dedicated American people it is also a huge organization in New York. The article has quotes , hyperlinks, and important dates. This connects to our topic in class because we are learning about American Values. This article talks about two of the six American values we learned in class. Monica Davey would agree with the author of We The People because they are both discussing about American values and why us as citizens of America should exercise our values and use them daily to express our inner concerns.
ReplyDeleteThe article that I choose is called, “ Soldiers overthrow Mali government in setback for Democracy in Africa” by Adam Nossiter. This article has to with soldiers in Mali overthrowing their government because it failed to follow their natural rights, and having a democratic based government gave them the chance to shut down the government. This article connects to this weeks reading because they both talk about natural rights and how people tend to revolt when these rights are being violated. The Article I found online is credible because it is from the New York Times, a universal newspaper that is strongly trusted. The author doesn't really show an argument, the article is more of an informational. For example the author writes, “ The Malian leader is a former soldier who overthrew the president-for-life, Moussa TraorĂ©, in 1991 before handing power back to civilians. He came to office in elections in 2002 and was returned to office in 2007.” The author talks more about facts and the actual situation then his opinions and argument. The author of the text we read in class would agree with Adam Nossiter because the situation that happened in africa reflects with one of the points the author had for example, “ Locke argued that if government fails to protect individuals rights, then the people are entitled to replace it, if necessary by revolution.” The author would agree because the point that was quoted explained exactly what the soldier in africa did to their government because they felt insecure about it. The author of the article online would also agree with the article from school because they both have to deal with the importance of the individuals rights.

ReplyDeleteThe article “ Natural Law and Natural Rights” by James A. Donald, is about how natural rights and values of individuals continuesly changed of it’s original definition of natural law. This article connects to the class topic from this week “ What are the American Political Ideals” in which both texts talks about how the idea of natural rights are being changed continuesly and if America is living up to it’s ideals. An example that questions that America is continuesly changing it’s idea of natural laws and values, is when James A. Donald says, “ It is to imagine in principle a world where these definitions were not equivalent . If humans were intelligent bees, rather than intelligent apes these definitions would not be equivalent and the concept of natural law would be trival or meaningless, but we are what we are...”. This text I found is credible because it is a resource page that includes contact information of where and when it was published Including a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 3.0 license. James A. Donald would agree with the author of “What are the American Political Ideals” because he too questions if the America is living up to it’s ideals and if the government is doing a sufficient job at succeeding . As well as the author from the class text who would agree with James A. Donald, in which he would say natural rights and values are continuesly being changed by the government every time their is a big Impact on the people making government include more natural laws to the constitution to satisfy the average Americans, who seem to always come up with an idea that gives them more power as in society.
The Los Angeles times presents an article recently published by Kathleen Hennessey on September 13th, 2012 called “Obama promises to punish terrorists, lauds American Value”. This article is about the campaign speech rally that President Obama made in Colorado about the issue on terrorists and the American values that are taking action till this day. This concern has been dealt with ever since September 11th, 2001.
ReplyDeleteThis text connects to this week’s topic and reading because it discusses the issues about people’s natural/ human rights and American value. Obama discusses the issue on terrorism and how it is not permitted in a society that praises their American values. He believes that everybody needs and should be treated equally. Obama wants the people to realize that one shouldn’t suspect that if you are Muslim you are a terrorist. He wants to prove that the United States is filled with different amount of people from all around the world. The other text We the People is similar to Hennessey’s article because it talks about the philosophical beliefs / ideas that strengthen the ideas of human rights and the power of a united society.
The Los Angeles times (latimes.com) is a credible source in Los Angeles, California because the reporters write about experiences that they and others have witnessed in their society. They know what’s the truth about their stories and no one else. “Obama promises to punish terrorists, lauds American Value” is the article that Kathleen Hennessey has published on September 13th , 2012 in latimes.com.
Kathleen Hennessey does not present strong evidence to support her argument because most of the article presents Obama’s ideas.
Kathleen Hennessey would say that the class text, discusses the same ideas on how the people should be treated fairly by the others. Everybody is created equally no matter what race, religion and ethnicity you are. The people have the right to have a say in electing there leader and government. The government was not created to control the people but to help them make beneficial choices and create laws that will organize and help the society.
The author from the class text would say that Kathleen Hennessey should not receive the total concept credit to the article she published because those are not her words and ideas but Obama’s. Her ideas might be similar and grasp the same understandings of the author and Obama.
The article I found was from The Johns Hopkins University Press titled “The Philosophic Foundations of Human Rights” it was written by the President of the American Bar Association & Jerome J. Shestack and a text from chapter 2 We The People. Individual rights: Natural rights Philosophy emphasize the existence of inalienable rights of each person. From chapter 2 we the People, in this saying it talks about the natural rights of people in the United States .This is one of the topic's that we had in class this week about Individual rights and 5 other rights that Americans have .one credible post is from a The Johns Hopkins University Press written by titled “The Philosophic Foundations of Human Rights” written by the President of the American Bar Association and a past United States Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights Jerome J. Shestack ,. The things this that it doesn’t have is hyperlinks or any comments made by other people reading this source, the thing this article is Relevant because is close to one of the topics of this week class. The thing that Michael sandel & Jerome J. Shestack may agree with each other due to that they both believe in Individual rights due to the thing they both talk about how that it’s one of the natural rights of people in America, in this week we have talked about some characteristics of a democratic government and there ideal which were Republicanism ,Constitutionalism , Individualism , Equality , Private Property and Freedom of Speech which we are the natural rights of the citizens of the united states
ReplyDeleteThe article I read is called “Full Text: Obama’s Remarks on arrival of the bodies of Chris Stevens, 3 Others from Libya. Tyrone Woods devote his 20 years of his life to the SEALs. Sean Smith also lived to served, first in the Air Force then the State Department. They both loved to serve this country and served it well. They knew the baggage/ danger it came with and they proudly accepted it. They also embodied the American ideal. They had courage, hope, idealism and the belief that they can leave this world a little better than before. The message Woods and Smith sends everyday is civilians military. They believe people should start focusing more on dignity and freedom that every person deserves. This article talks about the American Ideal, courage, idealism, and belief in which all fall under the categories of individualism, freedom of speech and equality. Courage and belief have to do with individualism and freedom of speech because if you’re independent you have the quality of mind that enables a person to face difficulty without fear. This author presents strong evidences to support the argument. An example stated in order to gain people’s freedom and dignity they will stand fast against the violence on their diplomatic missions. The author of this article will agree that a big part of developing a society has to be freedom of speech, equality and individualism. The author of the class text will agree that certain needs are needed to sacrifice their pursuit in order to lead a nation in war and peace. They will also agree that people need courage so that the community could work together and overcome obstacles. I believe this it’s from the national journal.
ReplyDeleteThe article that I choose for this week reading is called “Equality And Natural Rights” by William E. Blake. This article in about how natural rights were given to men by god but also says how Mr. M.T. Richardson goes against that and says that all are are not created equally due to the fact that they have different strength and different set of skills. This article in a way connects to We The People reading because it talks about equality and natural rights and how people were born with the but it also goes against them by saying that each person was created not created equally due to the fact that they have different skills such as intelligence and strength, but both agree in the fact that they were born with the right of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
ReplyDeleteThis text is credible because it was posted in the New York Times in August 28, 1900 the New York Times is a large news site for New Yorkers trying to find out the latest news it has been around since 1851 and to this present day it remains a top news source for many people. The author of this text William E. Blake shows arguments from Mr. M.T. Richardson on his opinion on how people are not created equally due to the fact that they have different traits. Also one of the major evidence that he uses to show his arguments is actual words that president Abraham Lincoln said such as “They did not mean to say all were equal in color size, intellect, moral development or social capacity”. Which in a way agree to this because everybody was born different with also a different purpose in life some were born to succeed and others weren’t but we all have a purpose even if its big or small. William E Blake would say that We The People should talk about a different perspective even though we humans need one another in order to survive it won't change the fact that we are all greedy and selfish and want to follow and chase our own dreams and do the things that make us happy. Even though they will both agree on the fact of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The author of we the people of have a negative view of the article from William E Blake and say that the people need to worry about the community in order be a good classical republican and put their difference and individuals values aside in order to benefit the community even though they are created with different traits.
Super post. I hope within a short time we will get more post like this nice post.Bankruptcy Attorney.
