  1. This week I read “ Guarding A Fundamental Right Of Privacy In Europe”, by Eric Pfanner. This article talks about trying to keep the privacy of the people protected especially with social network like Facebook and search engine Google being worldwide. This article connect to Chapter 39 from We The People because it talks about examples of government violating the rights of others when it comes to privacy for example FBI takes computers to check personal files by taking out the hard drive inside to see if there any evidences that the FBI can use. This situation mostly happens when there terrorists actions or suspicious involve. This article is credible because its publish by the well known newspaper New York Times which has the reputation of putting out credible news worldwide. This article is also credible because author Eric Pfanner has written over 780 articles for New York Times which means that New York Times really trust Mr Pfanner to basically represent them in news coming from there newspaper. Pfanner shows various evidence about the importance of the people privacy being important. CNIL ( Commission Nationale de L’informatique ‘et des Libertes) and Ms Falque - Pierrotin has press big companies such as Google and Facebook due to that fact that their very popular and if they make a privacy change for the people guess what other social company going to do ? Well they obviously going to do the same which is good because then the spread of privacy will help the people feel secure and comfortable behind their computer screen. CNIL has the power to fine companies as much as $382,000 which means they are very important and serious in keeping privacy a big issue. Both of these article focus on the rights of the people and shows examples on asking historical questions such as the one from We The People where it shows examples of the government’s action are really violating the people’s rights which is unconstitutional. In Eric Pfanner article Ms. Falque - pierrotin stated “This is not about taking the scalp of a big company” “ It’s about pushing them to come into conformity. If a company that is at the heart of the digital economy cannot come up with a satisfactory solution , that is very serious”. Based on this statement both article connects with each other because both article are using popular events and or popular websites to sent out the message of how important it is to protect the privacy of the people. Using popular sources would help something that people may think someone would be like “ damn , I really didn’t think of it like “ damn , I really didn’t think of it like that , thats not right we need change”.

  2. The article I found was “Nation Reels after Gunman Massacres 20 Children at School in Connecticut” by James Barron. James Barron talks about how a guy named Adam Lanza went into Sandy Hook Elementary attacking and killing 20 children and 8 adults with rifles and shotguns. One of those 28 people was the women who brought him into this world which was his own mother. James also touches on the how the parents reacted towards this massacre and how this effected the small town in central Connecticut.
This article relates to this week’s topic because it discuss on liberty and violence of this nation. Both articles talk about how violence has been increasing and now reaching out to schools making the crime scene increase. They both talk about how the government needs to balance order with liberty.
This source is credible because it comes from the New York Times which it’s a very known company which won’t give false statement. James Barron is an American journalist who writes for the New York Times. He also has his own book called Piano: The Making of a Steinway Concert Grad.
The author does present strong evidence to support his argument about how violent and tragedy this event caused by stating Obamas view towards the massacre. As James Barron stated “He called the victims “beautiful little kids. They had their entire lives ahead of them: birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own,” he said. Then the president reached up to the corner of one eye”. Obama is feeling the pain of the parents that lose their children as if he was put in the same situation. Obama talked from his heart and made it known that gun policy will be way different due to this case. James Barron also states” The rampage, coming less than two weeks before Christmas, was the nation’s second-deadliest school shooting, exceeded only by the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, in which a gunman killed 32 people and then himself”. The shooting will affect this town forever and also put these little children in a difficult situation due to what they saw during the shooting.
The increase in violence has led to many cases and issues in today’s society. We the people stated “violent crime is widespread in the nation’s inner cities, but few areas of our society feel safe. Violence even has become a problem in our schools”. James Barron will agree with we the people because they both talk about how violence has been accruing not only in the streets or homes but also in schools, where you think is safe. James Barron reads “Hundreds of terrified parents arrived as their sobbing children were led out of the Sandy Hook Elementary School in a wooded corner of Newtown, Conn”. Here I can’t imagine how these kid must have been coming out of a crime scene and running into their parents arm. The parents of these children must have been so terrified for them and praying that everything is okay because no one will want to be in a situation like this. Sending your children off to school where you think it’s safe and not knowing if you would ever see them again.

  3. The I article chose is called “A Cruel and Unusual Record” by Jimmy Carter. This article is about how America is no longer the global champion of human rights due to its violation of human rights like assassinations or involving in “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”This article connects to the class reading as they both talk about how America has forgotten the founding ideas which it was built up on. This article is credible because it is from the nytimes, a news source with a reputation for producing high quality, precise and concise news articles. The author Jimmy Carter uses strong evidence to support her example of how America can “no longer speak with moral authority on these critical issues[Human rights]”.An example of strong evidence is “United States, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in 1948 as “the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. This is a strong piece of evidence because it shows how the united states handles their power and they choose to handle it with responsibility. Both these texts would agree that America has forgotten its original founding principles. My article supports this argument by saying “Revelations that top officials are targeting people to be assassinated abroad, including American citizens, are only the most recent, disturbing proof of how far our nation’s violation of human rights has extended.” The class reading supports this argument by saying “American constitutional history has witnessed many conflicts between competing principles of equal merit”. Both these pieces argue that America has forgotten their founding principles.

  4. The text I found is about how the Dream Act will benefit the nation’s economy. If those undocumented students get to attend college they will get to contribute to the nation and decrease the deficit. The Dreamers would have good jobs when they graduate college and the nation would have more people paying taxes. This connects to this week’s topic because it talks about the fundamental principles of life. The Dreamers are part of the minorities which is talked about in the class text. This text is credible because it is a well known non partisan website. It was also founded by John Podesta Who served as White House chief of staff to President William J. Clinton. He served in the president’s cabinet and as a principal on the National Security Council. The author presents strong evidence to support his argument. He uses expert testimony to prove that the Dream Act will benefit the nation. Raul C Jara who is a research associate at the University Of Notre Dame’s Institute for Latino Studies. He said that the Dream Act “would provide a pathway to legal status for an estimated 2.1 million undocumented youth currently living in our country. For the nation as a whole, passage of the DREAM Act will add a total of $329 billion to the economy by 2030, support the creation of 1.4 million new jobs, and generate more than $10 billion in increased revenue for the federal government.”This proves that the Dream Act is not only aiming to benefit these undocumented students, it would also benefit the nation. In the article I read it says “enabling these 2.1 million eager-to-be-Americans to contribute to building the American Dream would deliver a double boost to our economy.”This tells us that immigrants are not harming our nation as much as some people believe. They can benefit the nation with paying taxes if they can become citizen. They will become professionals like other Americans have the opportunity to do so.In the class text it says that “Immigrants are not the refuse but the sinew and bone of all the nations,Education is the essence of American opportunity, the treasure that no thief could touch, not even misfortune or poverty.”This quotation is saying that immigrants should have access to education and that immigrants shape our nation. These texts connect because they emphasize the fact that immigrants should have equal opportunity to an education and that they benefit our nation.

  5. The New York Times article that I found this week is titled “Stop and Frisk Policy - New York City Police Department” and it is about how stop and frisk is now being challenged by the federal court. The connection between the class reading and the New York Times article is that they both have to do with citizens challenging unfair treatment by the law enforcers. In addition, both articles talk about ways that the police are or have try to violate the citizens rights from stop and frisk, in the article i found, to the police proposing to search peoples houses for guns without no court warrants, the class reading. As a well known newspaper the New York Times will lose many supporters if they give out false information. Robert Stolarik from the New York Times article defence his argument by providing statistics. “In New York City, the approach led to close to 700,000 stops in 2011 alone.” and he later adds “black and Hispanic young men, who have made up 85 percent of those stopped.” The police are stopping people just on their racial profiling. The police believe that the minorities are more likely to have illegal objects on them. As a result the minorities feel that the police are racist and the minorities are fighting against the practice of stop and frisk. “The Police Department conducted 203,500 stops in the first quarter… But in the second quarter — April, May and June — the police stopped 133,934 people...” As the people keep on fighting the practice of stop and frisk the police will lower the right in which they stop and frisk minorities. The police are trying to violate the citizens rights to lower crimes. “.... officials in that city proposed large-scale police ‘sweeps’ of apartments to search for illegal weapons. These searches would not require search warrants or evidence of probable cause.” The police are trying to lower the crime in their cities even if it comes at the cost of the rights of the citizens. But the police use the excuse of trying to lower the crimes in their cities to justify their unfair treatment towards minorities. “ police unfairly target black and Hispanic young men, who have made up 85 percent of those stopped.” With the citizens constantly fighting against police trying to reduce their rights or put treat several groups of people unfairly.

  6. This week the article that I read is called “A comparison of the Dream Act and other proposal for Undocumented Youth” from the Immigration policy center which is about how the Dream Act will affect undocumented immigrants compared to other to other proposals that will also benefit Undocumented immigrants. This source relates to this week reading because undocumented immigrants are more likely to know their fundamentals because if you don’t really know them then it’s like you don’t really have any rights. Also because since more undocumented immigrants are coming into the United States it causing unity now it’s up to them to decide whether they would like to assimilate to the custom of America. The source is credible because it’s from the American immigration council and this is a huge policy also it’s where undocumented immigrants can go and look up any information that they want about the Dream Act also they would not like to be known as a policy that give false statements . The type of evidence that the author uses is strong because it talk about how undocumented immigrants bring their culture with them and with the Dream Act being accepted they can share their knowledge and improve it and not be scared of being deported. These types of evidence are strong because they relate to things that are going on in the world and are actually affecting some people that we might know. Granting Undocumented immigrants citizenships can only be beneficial to the country and since people see that they know more about the culture than some of the people from it because they know their rights also they know their amendments and know that they cannot be violated. These two sources connect mainly because they involve both the fundamentals from this generation and previous ones. This evidence is strong because majority of young teens are of different race which was huge in this election that passed since young voters are very important and can probably decide the winner. In the reading that I read is states that ‘Meanwhile, public statements issued by Sen. Rubio and his staff about his proposal suggest that undocumented students would also receive temporary nonimmigrant status while in college or the military” this is just cause and effect because since the government probably saw the amount of teen that were not from America and saw that they were not doing anything wrong and knew their fundamentals and knew that they can not be violated. Undocumented immigrants bring their own culture and share it with Americans and some Americans sometimes even assimilate themselves to that culture. Which leads into this week reading and a quote from Ruth Fulton Benedict that states “if In world history, those who have helped to build the same culture are not necessarily of one race, and those of the same race have not all participated in one culture.” this means that the people from that country don’t only participate in their own culture but also in the one of different countries which show cultural diffusion and unity.

  7. The article I read is called "Relationship Between Poverty and Overweight or Obesity". Low-income people are far more likely to be obese. This study shows a research on the complicated relationship between obesity and poverty. Using NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) data from 1999-2004, one study of children 6 to 19 years of age found greater obesity at lower family income levels among White and Mexican-American children. Obesity rates did not differ significantly by poverty status for 12 to 14 year old based on a large national survey from 1999-2004, but rates were over 50 percent higher among 15- to 17 year old in poor families compared to non poor families. In the lowest income group and the lowest education group people are more obese than among those in the highest income and education groups. The article "Relationship Between Poverty and Overweight or Obesity" connects to the Chapter 39 from We the People because it talks about how people in this country are been affected because they live in low income areas than in people in high income areas. The article comes form The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) is the leading national nonprofit organization working to improve public policies and public-private partnerships to eradicate hunger and undernutrition in the United States. FRAC conducts research to document the extent of hunger, its impact, and effective solutions. FRAC also seeks improved federal, state and local public policies that will reduce hunger and undernutrition. The author of the article "Relationship Between Poverty and Overweight or Obesity" gives strong evidence when it says that a national study states "Obesity rates increased by 10 percent for all U.S. children 10- to 17-years old between 2003 and 2007, but by 23 percent during the same time period for low-income children". The amount of obese people in low income has increase over time. People in low income areas are been affected more than those people who live in high income areas. This article talks about how certain areas get more than those areas who are in needs.

  8. The article I chosed this week is called “Conquering Food Deserts With Green Carts” because it is helping me with my next research paper which is based on health/obesity.
I chosed this article because it talks about how groups of people are trying to bring back healthy food back to the low income areas. This article also show how green carts is way more cheaper and affordable for low income people and provides jobs for the people. It is clear that if the people work and push to get green carts outside in more areas then there will be a decrease of childhood obesity. My text connects to this week topic because this week article chapter 39 from we the people says “American experiment in self government was an adventure in ideas” so I guess it means that by people self governing themselves they are able to make new ideas. In Conquering Food Deserts With Green Carts shows “Today, many groups are looking to bring healthy food back to these areas, and some of the more creative initiatives are in New York.” meaning that by giving these groups of people freedom they can try there best to try and bring back green carts to low income people. This article is credible because is coming from the New York times and they won’t make up something because it might mess up their reputation and is also coming from David Bornstein. David Bornstein grew up in Montreal ,Canada and is an author and journalist who writes about social innovation and is a founder of doswer.org. The author of this article presents strong evidence when he uses foundations and companies to help him prove his argument. Bornstein states “To the city’s credit, it has enlisted help from Acción USA, which provides low-interest loans to vendors, and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, which offers grant support to provide vendors with business consulting services, delivered by a company called Karp Resources.” Bornstein shows that from this information that green carts are going to be in progress and start working and that companies and foundation are willing to help the people start off. The article i chosed this week is similar to this weeks topic because my article it talks about people trying to make change to help others and in We The People states that each individual has rights.

  9. The text I found is called “ A Rotting Apple - Education Redlining in new York City” by Schott the founder of Of Public Education. This article talks about low income families and their low graduation rate and some causes. One of those causes is that kids from low income families have less educational opportunities, such as head start and after school program and bad experienced. The reading from this week talks about the connection between fundamental principles and ideas from our government to an existing issue. In my reading it states that the lack of federal interaction is the cause of the unequal distribution of opportunities by race and neighborhood. Kids who attend schools that are in high quality neighborhoods have a higher chance of their school to be engaged in better programs for the kids and to receive better services towards their learning. This is negative for the students and schools in low income neighborhood because it has huge monetary and nonmonetary costs. People from low performing schools spend most of their money on teachers that are not as experienced as they need teachers to be. These teacher use those jobs as their experience towards developing their teacher skills. As a result of this students from low income families receive low quality education that will later affect their future. My article is credible because this research report is by Michael Holzman, which is an senior research manager and an independent consultant and writer. He is also the founder of many programs for example Gateway: Paths to Adult Learning, which is a national literacy program that enabled at least 30,000 adults to learn to read.
The author of this article presents strong evidence because he uses statistics to strengthen his argument that low income families have less educational opportunities. This author shows a graph in which shows the relationship between the neighborhood and their opportunity to learn. For example in manhattan which includes the lower East side have a 0.33 opportunity to learn versus harlem that only has 0.07. This evidence was taken from many mutually reinforcing policies and practices that limit the opportunity to learn for all too many New York City students. This data concludes that the poorer your neighborhood is the less educational opportunity you have. By adding this graph the author not only increased the credibility of his argument but has clearly shown us the problem now it’s just time to take some actions toward increasing those educational opportunities rate.
Both texts are arguing that is better to know the fundamental principles and ideas of our government to the existing issues. The author from chapter 39 states how Joseph Stalin spoke upon the influence of religion to better understand of the most influential movement that sets motion the fall of the Soviet empire. Additionally, he later finds out that Poland’s government in power was impossible for them to gain acceptance by a population that has retained it’s deep acceptance. In my article is states that by acknowledging the unequal distribution of opportunity by race and neighborhood occurs with such regularity in New York then we could take actions towards increasing the graduation rate.

  10. The article I choose this week is called, “NRA Responds To Sandy Hook Massacre” by Christina Wilkie. This article is about the NRA (National Rifle Association) defending the constitutional right to bear arms and how they have no connection with what happened in the town of Newton CT, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This article connects to this week’s text, Chapter 39 from “We the people” because it has to do with the 2nd Amendment, which is the right to bear arms. They connect because they both talk about the same idea but they express it in different ways.
This article is credible because it is from the Huffington Post, which is a newspaper based in Washington D.C. The journalist Christina Wilkie covers special interest and lobby groups in Washington. This is another reason why this article is credible because, she writes about groups which provide an insight on whatever the issue is. Therefore Wilkie writes articles that are influenced by special interest and lobby groups so she does not favor a side, her articles are more of explanations to help argue these groups and their points.
Even though Wilkie doesn't present an argument her article stands strong. She goes into further details on comments the NRA has on the government’s decision to try to enforce more laws that prevent easy accesses to these weapons. One point Wilkie expresses is a quote by the NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre who's quoted statement is a response to The New York Times question on why the NRA is unresponsive on conversing with the Obama White house on this topic. LaPierre “Why should I or the NRA go sit down with a group of people that have spent a lifetime trying to destroy the Second Amendment in the United States?”. Wilkie's non-bias article makes her evidence strong because, even though she is not supporting a side she does a good job of projecting the ideas that need to be heard.
In spite of the fact that both of these text reflect on the same ideas they don't seem to support each other’s claims. “We The People” expresses that our constitutional system of government is an important challenge because it is how order and liberty is balanced. It states, “Liberty, too, must be limited in order to be possessed. While in Wilkie's article, the NRA an organization that has clearly contributed to going against what “We The People” expresses says, “The debate about how to prevent future gun massacres should focus on preventing the mentally ill from acquiring weapons. It shouldn't be a dialogue about guns; it really should be a dialogue about dangerous people” (LaPierre). Overall both articles share similar ideas, but have contrasting views on how the government handles issues that occur in the country.

  11. This week the article I choose was “The downside of diversity” written by Michael Jonas.Jonas spoke about how the United States has became increasingly populated and extremely diverse leading to social, religion and diversity in language. This has become such an extremely diverse nation that some are considering the United States a bilingual.Michael Jonas concept of diversity in the United States connects to this week’s other text I read called “Fundamental Principles”.These two articles connect to immigrants making this country matter and more interesting with their new culture and language they have brought to the United States along with their families and how should we as citizens take new step in order to control this and not lose our own american culture.Overall these two articles speak about the impressive things diversity brings to the United States but also how it causes us more money since we have to get more funds for health care, housing and other government funded programs.Jonas’s article of “The downside of diversity” is found credible because it is taken from a news source that get a lot of views. Also Jonas quotes from experts such as “His findings on the downsides of diversity have also posed a challenge for Putnam”, Putnam is a Harvard political scientist that made an experiment with 30,000 across america to go more indepth into the topic of diversity. This is the strongest evidence I believe Jonas used throughout the whole article because he is connecting both ideas his and Putnam to come to the conclusion of diversity benefiting and being a problem to the United States funded programs at the same time.

  12. My document “Making Healthy Food More Accessible for Low-income People” talks about how there are not many local restaurants stored with healthy foods. These unhealthy foods are leading to obesity and health issues. Also how local supermarkets in low income are not supplied with many whole foods which lead to people, transportation programs are needed in both rural and urban areas to make it easier for low-income people to reach food stores with greater variety, healthier options and lower prices, and how healthy foods should be cheaper for Food Stamps recipients. My text connects to this weeks topic because both discuss how a certain group of people have to be treated a certain way and how some things that the government does in order to obtain a bigger gap between the rich and the poor.
This source is credible because the Center for Food Integrity (CFI) was established in 2007 to build consumer trust and confidence in today's food system and its a non profitable whose members represent each segment of the food chain, including farmers and ranchers, universities, food processors, restaurants, retailers and food companies. The article does present strong evidence to further their argument by stating “Rural supermarkets nationwide have been found to charge on average 4% more than suburban supermarkets. Even within the same chain, supermarkets in urban and rural areas are likely to charge more than those in suburban areas”. Supermarkets where wealthier people are located tend to have healthier foods for a cheaper price meanwhile the low-income supermarket has less healthy choices for a much higher price. “ In the article “What does returning to Fundamental Principles Mean?” the author states “ A nation is judged by how it treats its minorities” which is a quote that relates to both articles because they both discuss the issue on how America is not treating minorities the same as whites. For example, the healthy food issue on having poor transportation to get to healthy supermarkets for people and having healthy supermarkets. The people of these low-income backgrounds which are also most likely minorities are becoming obese and more of these Americans are having health problems. This is because not many have access to healthy foods like they should be to be healthy but instead they have foods that do much harm to them. Our nation is supposed to be known as “treating all people equal” and show true republicanism but they're going against their own beliefs by not making healthy food accessible for local low-income supermarkets and improving things such as transportation or even raising the amount of money given for programs such as food stamps so that these low-income Americans will be able to purchase healthy foods.

  13. The text “ Assault Weapons Are Weapons of Mass Destruction and Should Be Banned.” by Robert Creamer explains how rapid fire arms are being used for slaughters of large numbers for human beings. These mass destruction weapons are falling into the hands of terrorist. This weeks reading on chapter 39 “what does returning to fundamental principle mean?” explains that how the city is trying to search people's homes for weapons. This text is from the Huffington Post is an american news website founded by Arianna Huffington. The Huffington Post was launched on May 9, 2005 as a liberal commentary outlet. Robert Creamer is a long-time political organizer and strategist, and author of the book: Stand Up Straight. According to Creamer “For 10 years there was a ban on the production, ownership and use of assault weapons in the United States until Congress and the Bush Administration allowed it to lapse when it sunset and came up for reauthorization in 2004.” This obviously has caused bad outcomes such as the Sandy Hook Incident were 20 first graders lost their innocent lives. The purchasing of guns should be illegal. According to Chapter 34 the 4th amendment says“ the right of people to be secure in their persons , houses, papers, and effects... shall not be violated and no warrants shall issue , but upon probable use.” But there is no reason why weapons of mass destruction of any sort such as chemical weapons, improvised explosive devices ,missiles, nuclear devices, or assault weapons should be easily accessible. On the other hand Creamer says “The simple fact is that no right is absolute because rights come into conflict with each other. Your free speech does not give you the right to cry "fire" in a crowded theater.” Yet of course people have the right to own a weapon and they are just taking advantage of these rights. There should be a stronger regulation on the ownership of weapons. The weapon shops should do a background check or a mental check on people because most of these people are just sick in mind, maniacs or terrorist. Not every individual should be trusted with weapons.

  14. http://www.courthousenews.com/2012/03/29/45147.htm

In the article “NYC Renters Fight Police Sweeps” by Adam Klasfeld writes about residents getting bombarded while living in New York City’s Operation Clean Halls. Clean Halls are private owned buildings that let landlords allow the police to patrol the area. In the article, Klasfeld writes that this action taken by the New York City police puts “hundreds of thousands of mostly minority New Yorkers ‘under siege’ in their own homes”. Klasfeld also writes that those affected are the minority, who are mostly black and Latino residents.
Klasfeld’s article connects to this weeks We the People Chapter 39 because on page 297, the chapter states that prospective tenants should fight using the Fourth Amendment and states that searches require warrants. Klasfeld’s article and Chapter 39 connect because both confirm that an unreasonable search from police officials is unconstitutional.
Klasfeld uses a statement said by the New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman to prove his article. Lieberman says “For residents of Clean Halls buildings, taking out the garbage out or checking the mail can result in being thrown against the wall and humiliated by police”. The New York Civil Liberties Union is one of the nation’s defenders of civil liberties and civil rights. Klasfeld continues to use examples and statistics from the NYCLU such as a filed complaint relating to residents tales, “a 17-year-old detained after buying ketchup for his mother; a woman's call to 911 after her boyfriend, a police sergeant, was detained for bringing Chinese take-out into her building; and a high school junior arrested for ‘trespassing’ in his own home”.
This article is credible because Courthouse News service is a nationwide news service for lawyers and news media, focusing on civil litigation.
Klasfeld’s article “NYC Renters Fight Police Sweeps” and We the People chapter 39 both explain how it is unconstitutional for police officials to search innocent Americans in their own homes. It is not a coincidence that New York City police officers are searching the minority, blacks and Latinos, due to racial profiling. This discriminates the majority of New York City residents, especially those living in Clean Hall buildings, because they don’t have the power to argue against police officials at the time. However, residents can use the fourth amendment to stop illegal searches.

  15. The article that i found this week is called “East Harlem residents rank rising crime ahead of healthcare, housing and jobs as neighborhood's biggest problem”. This article talks about a survey done to the residents living in the community of East Harlem, about which topic they think that they city needs to fix. The topic with the highest vote, was Crime Reduction which had 77%. this article provides some good statistics votes ranging from the Lower East Harlem to the Upper East Harlem.
This article relates to this week’s reading of “Chapter 39”,because it mentions information about how violence is one of the biggest problems so far nationwide. The reading says that “violent crime is widespread in the nation’s inner cities.” This article is credible because it becomes a large and successful newspaper organization, that is one the highly read newspaper in the Tri-state area. It focuses on issues affecting not only New York City , but internationally as well , and also very diverse topics from crimes in New York City to civil issues in the Middle East.
The author gives good evidence because the author includes a survey from 2010 where the author quotes ““Crime was not in the top five (in past years),Now it’s number one . . . it’s clearly resonating.” problem in the colored communities of New York City. The author also includes a compare and contrast statistics. according to statistics “felony complaints in the seven major crime categories (murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto) in the 23rd and 25th Precincts — which cover East Harlem — were up 14% and 17%, respectively, compared to the same period last year, and have reported two-year increases of 10% and 14%, respectively.” East Harlem now has a problem on their hands which is violence , which might relate to stop and frisk policy, because since the crime rates have gone up, this might give officers a reason to search suspects.
East Harlem is a large neighborhood in Upper Manhattan, which holds lots of Black history of New York City. However as stated in Chapter 39 , violence has become such a large problem In the United States. Harlem has already other problems like complaints on stop and frisks, however more violence leads to bigger problems, in overall adding more fuel to the fire.

  16. The article that I found is a section from the website stopandfrisk.org called NYCLU Briefing, and this exert introduces many data relating to recent NYPD stop and frisk reports from 2011.This text leads you to the thought that there is some type of racial profiling within the NYPD .

Both this weeks reading on the Fundamental Principals from chapter 39 and the article that I found from stopandfrisk.org NYCLU Briefing bothconnect to each other purpose and message, Because the reading on the Fundamental Principals help you understand the fact that the things that you do are done because you as a individual have principals and or they are more like your moral, your reasons on doing something. And this weeks article helps you question the Fundamental principles of the NYPDs stop and frisk program, simply based on the emphasis on the topic of racial profiling leading to the many wrongful stop and frisk.( in this case wrongful meaning cops using their sense of suspicions and stopping innocent people).

The website stopandfrisk.org is a credible source because is a website put on by a public organization in which their goal is to raise awareness on the police brutality and wrongful stop and frisk procedures. StopandFrisk.org is awebsite in which it has many ,partnership like the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), the NYCLU is an civil rights organization in the United States. Founded in November 1951 as the New York affiliate the ACRU , it is a nonprofit organization with nearly 50,000 members across NEw York States. This implies that stopandfrisk.org is a credible website because of its successful partnership with the NYCLU.

In the excer from stopandfrisk.org NYCLU Briffing introduced many statistics and other reports regarding to the NYPDs stop and frisk procedure . For example, it states that The NYCLU has released quarterly reports compiled by the NYPD revealing that stops have continued to increase dramatically. the fact that the amount of stop and frisk is increasing just out lines that the NYPDs suspicion is leading to all this stop and frisk. Within the NYCLU Briefing a chart is presented and this chart demonstrates the division between the latino , black , and the white. it says out of 685,724 stops in 2011 33.7 percent latino were stopped , 52.9 percent blacks were stopped , and 9.3 percent were whites. when you notice that the majority of the people stopped were blacks, this argument sparks up the many suspicion on what is really the cause of the NYPD stopping the blacks more.

The NYCLU Briefing introduces the many facts that can help lead to the suspicion that the fact that there is more stops and frisks towards the black and latino is because of racial profiling. Studies say that in 2011young black and latino males were the targets of a hugely disproportionate number of stops ...black and latino males accounted for 41.6 percent of those stopped . This is a sign of racial profiling coming from the NYPD mainly because of the people that is being targeted. .In the NYCLU excerpt it shows a chart that demonstrates the percentage of stops resulting in forced use and it demonstrates 22.5 of black, latino have been stopped and force was being used. But what causes the NYPD to imply these physical actions, so does racial profiling leads to the NYPDs wrongful stop and frisk?.

  17. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/immigration/9744501/Ed-Miliband-tells-immigrants-to-learn-English-as-he-admits-Labour-failed-to-stop-segregation.html

The following article titled “Ed Miliband Tells Immigrants to Learn English as He Admits Labour Failed to Stop Segregation” by Rowena Mason describes how immigrants should learn how to speak English so they can be able to defend themselves when the English language is being used towards the immigrants. This article connects to this week’s reading because in one part of the text called Chapter 39 from We the People, it mentions the idea of unity versus diversity. Specifically, it states the following, “Throughout American history English has been the principal language of the country”. In other words, the primary language should be taught to every individual residing in the United States, whether they’re undocumented or not. This article is credible because it is from a very populated website called The Telegraph and it includes the name of the author. It also provides hyperlinks to the author’s name and the time and date the author published this piece of literature to the internet. If false information was ever to be published in a piece of literature, that author will definitely lose the number of viewers and readers drastically. Rowena Mason presents strong evidence to support her argument in various ways. Mason states the following, “That’s about learning English, it’s about making sure that you don’t have slum housing where you have maybe ten, 20, 30 people all packed in a house working in a local factory or somewhere”. In other words, Mr. Milliband was able to express his feelings in a way that won’t harm others. In other words, Mason expresses other individuals’ opinions, which benefits her into making his argument stronger. Overall, the article and this week’s reading have a very strong connection towards each other. While the article argues that the immigrants should have them to learn, speak and write English, in this week’s reading it states the following, “For millions of immigrants learning English has been an important first step to becoming a U.S. citizen”. This emphasizes the idea that there is a very strong importance into knowing that hopefully, immigrants will all have the opportunity. Yet, in order to do that, the solution, based on the week’s reading, is the following, “Schools must teach immigrant children who speak languages other than English”. By observing these ideas, America is trying their best and possible way to allow the immigrants to have the same rights as U.S. citizens.

  18. In the article I choose this week is called, "Anaheim's Long, Hot Summer: The Police vs. the Latino Community" by Jens Erik Gould. This article is on the protest in front of the Anaheim City Hall following the death of two wrongfully killed Latinos in Anaheim City by local police men.
This article connects to my argument on police brutality and the change my group and I want to make. By making heavier sanctions on police officers that are convicted of police misconduct. With this change we can hope to scare off the police men who even think about abusing the power given to them.
This article is creditable because it comes from the times magazine. The Times Magazines just won the award of magazine of the year back in may of this year. Jens Erik Gould was a politics and economy correspondent in Mexico City for Bloomberg News from 2008 until April 2011, where he also appeared on Bloomberg Television.
Jens Erik Gould articles does provide strong evidence like "killings by officers in Los Angeles County jumped nearly 70% last year compared with 2010" witch pushes his argument on how the police in L.A. county that includes Anaheim, show this is a problem in the area and this protest is pressuring city officials to make a change in their police men conduct to slow down this percent or even stop it if possible.
This article connects to Chapter 39 of "We the people" because it talks about the Fundamental Principles of America. The right to protest in the 1st amendment, an idea made by America's founding fathers. This articles proves the fact made by John Maynard Keynes witch is "In the long run it is ideas and not men who rule the world." Even now we use the ideas made many years before. It is those fundamental principles we still live by like Constitutionalism and the people in this protest feel that the police abuse their power and they want justice.

  19. The article I read this week is call “NYPD: Can we still call them NY’s Finest? By Cassandra garrison. This article talks about how the NYPD has been working up to the demand people ask for in security for terrorism. They also speak about how the police department has been accused for police brutalities in minorities in formal events such as occupy Wall Street. They also speak about different cases were people were severely abused by police. For example they speak about the West African immigrant who was shot 19 times by officers because he was they thought he was reaching for a gun. This article that I read this week relates to chapter 39 of the book “we the people “in the book they talk about the importance of not fearing your government. How your government should fear the people. In this case the police serves are the government because they are allowed to control people by either follow or not fallowing the laws that each individual deserves. I found this text to be credible because it comes from the website Metro. Us. Metro is reliable because it is published in more than 100 major cities across Europe, north and South America. Also metro is a free daily news paper that is offer to the public, so they would think about it twice before putting fake information because they have a reputation to cover. It is also a bias source that informs more than 20 million readers each day. The author uses strong evidence to support her argument. For example she uses date from the Quinnipiac poll. The author also quotes the city councilman Jumaane Williams. She also quotes other important individuals such as major Bloomberg. Quoting these two individuals supports her argument because they talking about the New York police department and these to guys are the ones in charge of the of people and the ones who run the entire city.

  20. The text I found is "Stop and Frisk anger grows, local city council members step up." By Chris Meyer, Columbia Daily Spectator. This article is about how people are being stop and frisk being roughly treated. This article also touches on subject about different race between blacks and hispanic. "... Police stopped and frisked roughly 2,600 people in precincts 26, 28, 30, and 32 which comprise morning side heights and a majority of harlem, according to data released by the NYPD."(by Chris Meyer). Many innocent people are being stop for no reason and being process under stop and frisk. This article relates to my groups research on stop and frisk because its giving all key points about how stop and frisk is being harass. The article I found is credible because its branched from New York Times a well trusted newspaper. New York Times is read all around the world is very important newspaper everyone likes to read to get updates about everything. The reading of this week on chapter 39 We The People, shows examples of peoples right not being trust and taken into action because the government i being unreasonable with the people which is unconstitutional. "The individuals who founded America's governments cherished and respected ideas." The individuals are being violated by the government. Both of these article connect because in the first article individuals are being stop and frisk for no reason and the second is the government involved not believing what the peoples rights are.

  21. 1-2) Based on the article I found, “Majority Rule/Minority Rights: Essential Rights” talks about the differences between majority rule and minority rights. It goes into specific about the tyranny that comes with majority rule using African Americans as an example. Then it goes on to talk about what has been done to protect the rights for both the minority and the majority, but mostly to the minority. In our assigned reading of chapter 39 from We the People, we learn about the fundamental principles American government. Based on this chapter, it talks about Majority Rule vs. Minority Right. Both texts are related because they both rely on the same issue which is the tyranny of the majority, but targeting to the impacts of the minority.
    3) This source is credible because the author of this source is Eric Chenoweth, a graduate of Columbia University. It draws upon other relevant sources, some examples are few sections of the United States Constitution and many more credible sites. This was published and created by the Albert Shanker Institute.
    4) His evidence comes from the source that was written and helps and strengthens their argument. Chenoweth the author of this article does provide strong evidence to support his claim by supporting the minority group, while in We the People, the author has no side, this means its non-partisan. Dalton states that “ the term minority may refer to those on the losing side of a vote of any kind. It also refers to a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics such as ethnicity and political party.” He leads to saying “majority of voters or legislators could ignore the wishes of the minority.” The problem to this is that the majority is preventing the minority to use their rights. But Chenoweth uses Alexis de Tocqueville quote If it be admitted that a man possessing absolute power may misuse that power by wronging his adversaries, why should not a majority be liable to the same reproach? Men do not change their characters by uniting with one another; nor does their patience in the presence of obstacles increase with their strength. For my own part, I cannot believe it; the power to do everything, which I should refuse to one of my equals, I will never grant to any number of them." as a way to prove that the majority group abuses their power the same way a king does during absolute monarchy. This shows that Alex saw that the majority's tyranny over political and social minorities as "a constant threat" to American democracy. Dalton says that “ the views of the minorities could be ignored and their goals threatened only if the majorities will were limited.” This shows that the minority groups rights should be all protected as stated in the constitution. But the effect of this is that the minority is being looked at as unpopular and the majority as popular as a way to prove his argument.

5)In supporting the minority, the majority takes place into abusing and violating their rights. Chenoweth on his article says that America's experience is unique in scope, but all democracies have witnessed "the tyranny of the majority" applied against different social groups" This is a sign of unequal power and public power. So in Dalton point of view he states that the nation judges by how it treats it's minorities. This shows that the minority group has unequal rights than the majority. That is a symbol of tyranny in a democracy.

  22. http://www.nyclu.org/files/publications/NYCLU_2011_Stop-and-Frisk_Report.pdf

The Stop and frisk report by the New York Civil Liberty Union local advocacy organization explains and provides lots of data over the past year on the claimed reports on stopping and frisking people. Majority blacks and latinos.

Chapter 39 “ What does returning to fundamental principles mean?” of We the People, relates to the Stop and Frisk report from The New York Civil Liberty Union, in the sense that both articles are covering the conflicts that are being raised in regards to the principles that were once considered important to society.

Stop and Frisk report from The New York Civil Liberty Union has various amounts of evidence that makes their report credible, for instance, they provide numerous amounts of statistics and data on the amounts of stop and frisks that occurred over the year, innocent stops made by race, demographics, total stops by precinct ranking, frisks and force rank by precinct, and so forth.

The Local Advocacy Organization-(NYCLU) presents sufficient evidence to support their argument. They present an argument in which they imply that the majority of the Black and Latino New Yorkers that have been stopped have been innocent. The report provides a large amount of data, and statistics, for instance “In 2011 as compared to 2003 (the earliest year a gun is recovered)...NYPD conducted 524,873 more stops but recovered 176 more guns”.

Society has created standards in order to balance order. These principles have now been contrasted with our current contemporary issues.

  23. 1.The article that I have found was from New York Times. Article is called, “First Round of Voting Spurs Dispute in Egypt”. This article explains how Egypt is started to have some kind of rules that would have everyone on there side. But the main reason was for Egypt to have control over the people but not total dictator. Just to start off with new set of rules that would set up more equality and no more inequality.

2.This text connects to this week’s topic because it includes the idea of fundamental principles. It also mentions some of the ideas from the article of We the People: Chapter 39. Like most the main idea used inn the article was the idea of liberty and order. It also relates to this week’s topic because the article starts building up and shows how Egypt is also using some ideas form other times and where they’re coming from.

3.Some evidence found from the article is that the author is reliable. The author is known Kareem Fahim and he is one of the main author’s for a really popular newspaper company, New York Times. If you are an author for a well-known company that gives the best-detailed stories in the city or even the world, then they can’t let able to lie to the readers because if that occurs then the company loses publicity and money. The author also uses quotes from the Egypt’s candidates and their opinions on their positions and their views. Also, some other representatives from different countries having an opinion of Egypt’s actions.

4.The author doesn’t show the strongest evidence that you would ever read. It contains mostly quotes from the people in Egypt and their opinion of Egypt’s actions. The author could also have included some quotes from opinions of the citizens that are really concern with the decisions. It would show the evidence actually being eligible for it to be strong evidence. Also could have mentioned some background information of the fundamental principles. In the beginning of the article there was some statistical information but just briefly mentioning the number of the ballots casted.

5.The article mentions that Egypt is trying to adjust to the new system since they have never practiced it before the revolution. The author says, “One member was quoted in state news media saying a two-thirds majority in favor was needed for legitimacy” because of this, is proving that the people aren’t caring much of the changes that are going to occur soon but if they don’t vote they won’t be able to be heard. Like one of the ideas of the fundamental principles of majority vs. minority mentions that without the rest of the people there won’t be agreements. Like it’s said, “When great changes occur in history, when great principles are involved, as a rule the majority are wrong. The minorities are right” (Eugene Debs). If the minority are also involved it could show a better run from the candidates of a clear winner. Now Egypt has more rights and is capable to have more changes.

  24. This week I found a article from NYCLU.org talking about what racial group get stop the most in New York City in 2011 ,This article connects with this weeks blogpost on how the Government & NYPD have be violating the right of the citizens of New york by Stop and Frisk . This article is credible because it from NYCLU which is powerful news site that only talks about the things in New York city . In this Article it shows about how many people have been stopped in New York city and want locations are most people have been stop in 2011 and what racial group there in and if that person has a weapon on them , it is shown in the article that most people that have been stopped ib 2011 were blacks Latinos are second and white are third and other are last , but the people with the highest that have been stopped and had a weapon in 2011 were white second were Latinos a last were black which is a big surprise because whites are one of the races that are stopped . In this article there is a map of New york city were it shows we're most blacks and latinos are and the were most whites are in new York city , in this article there bar graphs of when the NYPD stopped people by race and again blacks are first to be stopped in 2011 . NYCLU may agree with chapter 39 of we the people because it shows how the NYPD have been abusing there power to stop people of a different race more the others which is a abuse of power of the government giving the police to have the right to stop any person they want in the new york city area. www.nyclu.org/files/publications/NYCLU_2011_Stop-and-Frisk_Report.pdf

  26. The reading I found this week is called “ What Kids Worry About (It Might Surprise You)” by Ondine Brooks Kuraoka, MSW. It is about, kids and what they worry about before high school as young as 8 years old and during high school the article discusses concerns that kids have such as, Grades, terrorism, war, pimples, divorce, school shootings, bullying, and fitting in, and connects them to how students worry about them.
This text connects to this weeks reading called, “ This is Water” by David Foster Wallace, because both reading's talk about how one is in one mindset or set's a goal and get's side-tracked by the little things that occur in one socials life. The text is credible because, it is written by Ondine Brooks Kuraoka a freelance writer in The San Diego Family Magazine who as a lot of experience in writing about different genres . This magazine is a free daily magazine that gives it's buyer readings on topics that have to do with social problems that affect people in there everyday life's.
Kuraoka present's strong evidence to support her main argument on how she thinks students concentrate in education get distracted with other matters which are not related. Kuraoka uses first hand expert testimony from Virginia Lopez, a licensed clinical social worker and therapist at a high school. She quotes what some of the students issues are, she says, “They worry most about family problems, parents arguing. They’re very aware of the finances and worry about the rent money and that there might not be enough to buy the clothes they want”. Which is beneficial because this is information coming from the actual students. This is a non-biased source that illustrate several positions from the authors argument.
Overall the reading I found and the reading from this week support each others argument on distractions that are seen as self centered issues, but are really issues that affect everyone and these issues should be seen through different lenses. In “ This is Water” Wallace, gives a scenario on a man waiting in the supermarket annoyed by everyone and their actions. Whilst in “ What Kids Worry About (It Might Surprise You)” quotes, “ real-life troubles take on new, distressing proportions.” They express how people get distracted easily by self centered issues when really they should look at issues from different perspectives.

  27. The article I read this week is called " A Rotting Apple -Education Redlining in New York City". This article talks about the unequal distribution of opportunity by face and neighborhood. The article " The Water" by David Foster Wallace talks about certain situation in which we are self-centered ( in our default setting ) . Default setting is when a person is a self centered that they don't know what's actually going on around them . This article I picked out for this week has to do with the research I'm doing in civics. The reasoning behind this project is to find solutions toward increasing the graduation rate in low in old neighborhoods like manhattan. Doing this project shows how I've gone out of my default setting to help people in my surroundings that need help . The author from my article presents the argument that the opportunity to learn and to attend a high performing school is largely determined by the neighborhood in which a child lives in. The author shows a graph in which shows the relationship between the community school's district and the % opportunity each kid has to learn. In the Bronx it shows that the kid has 5% versus in queens where kids have 30%. The author of this article used strong evidences because he used statistics to support his claim " the opportunity to learn and to attend a high performing school is largely determined by the neighborhood in which the child lives in " . Dr.Pedro Nogurera believes that manhattan has a low % of opportunities to learn, compared to to queens. He shows Manhattan has a 5% and queens a 30%. Dr. Pedro is a me to validate his argument because of the statistical exemplification he used . Both article shows how the individual are going out of their default setting and are trying to make a change . In my article they says a couple of solution that might increase the graduation rate for children in low income families. One of those solution is to get better experienced teachers. In the article " The Water" he states his thought process in a situation where he can control.

  28. This article I read this week is called “The Scars of Stop-and-Frisk”. It is about how the NYPD is trying to convince the general public that the Stop and Frisk program is an essential part of safety in NYC and is only helping the safety and moral of New Yorkers. In reality, there is little to no evidence of the stop and frisk program being beneficial. This connects to this weeks reading because it is about the ideals that the US was founded on how those ideals are being violated by the government.
The New York Times is a prestigious and well respected news organization in New York with a very positive reputation. It was founded in 1851 and has won many Pilitzer Prizes, more than any other news organization. They release a newspaper in New York everyday and its website receives over 30 million visitors per month. In order to protect their integrity they can't publish bias.
The article I read makes allot of good points about how the stop and frisk program should be terminated because it is not serving its purpose of keeping the streets safe. They whole program is contradicting because it is really contradictory. The police officers that are supposed to be keeping innocent citizens safe are actually terrorizing them. Many stops made under the stop and frisk program are unconstitutional. Many of the stops made are because of suspicion of weapons but infact guns are found in less than 0.2%. Police claim there is no racial profiling in making stops but of the stops made between 2003 and 2012, over 85% of the citizen stopped are of color. If the stop and frisk program was actually beneficial there would be more evidence of the effectiveness of the program. Over 70% of people stopped were completely innocent and a large percent of the people frisked were released because of little to no evidence of being guilty of a crime. That is after spending a night in jail of course.
This program can be beneficial for the city if major changes are implemented. The NYPD has to be clear on what constitutes “a suspicious bulge’’ or a “suspicious person’’. The biggest problem about the program is that its statistics show that the stopping is not random but and there is indeed racially profiling. The article talks about how american ideals are getting forgotten by the government and this program is a clear example. There is nothing about the stop and frisk program that helps the greater good.We as Americans have the right to walk down a street and not be scared about weather we are going to get stopped by the police for no reason and the NYPD should really change the program or completely abolish it and enlist a new program with statistics of success and no bias on what constitutes suspicious activity.

  29. The article I choose this week was “Stop and Frisk The Human Impact” by the Center for Constitutional Rights. This connects to my research project I have been doing this week on Stop and Frisk because its an inside view of what the individuals that get stopped and frisk face afterward ,especially with an on going criminal record. Also this article speaks on behalf of the individuals and contradicts the police department in saying it is a safe procedure. This article is credible because it was taken from the direct Stop and Frisk website which organizes events and programs about stop and frisk and informs people what to do if stopped and frisked. Stop and Frisk has been around for a while in New York city , its a way for the NYPD to enforce the law and make sure everyone is safe. This safety procedures usually are done to innocent people, base on racial profile and changes the life of most of the individuals that are Stopped and Frisked. The people that are mostly Stopped and Frisked are Latinos and African americans.According to “Stop and Frisk The Human Impact” the “NYPD they were inappropriately touched ,sexually harassed, and or/ sexually assaulted”. Some of the police officers of New York city take advantage of their authority and use it as they please causing emotional scars to new yorkers and cause them fear in trusting the police. “nine out of ten stops do not result in any arrest or summons, everyone subject to a stop and frisk must cope with the emotional, psychological, social, and economics impact on their lives”, police officers do not provide no psychological help after the abuse they caused. Most of them have to cope alone and when an emergency does happen they are afraid of calling the cops because they believe they are going to be taken advantage of when they do call. The government is trying to reduce the amount of arrest by making “...decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana in public view in order” because many individuals are getting arrested for small accounts that end up changing their whole life. Regardless if the individual gets caught with a small count they aren’t available to apply for “public housing or student loans and losing public benefits;potential immigration-related consequences can include the loss of legal residence status”.Therefore when having a criminal record do to stop and frisk it affects your life completely. In the government's eyes you are a criminal and you always will be thats why they take away all these benefits in order for the individual to not start a new life. The operation Stop and Frisk is a clear example of a poor managed operation.Stop and Frisk should be abolished from the New York City Police which will led to less unnecessary arrest. Most people in New York City are noticing this and are not making a change going in the streets and protesting for what they believe is right.
