The weekly assignment consists of five parts:
1) Read excerpts from Dalton's The Good Citizen, including all of the graphs at the end of the reading.
2) Take Cornell Notes on the reading. I will collect these notes on Friday in class.
3) Find another credible source on the internet that connects to the reading above. You should try to find a source on your policy issue so that it can work for this blog post and contribute to your research.
4) After you read the source that you find, answer the following questions as a blog entry below:
- Write a summary sentence for the text you found.
- How does the text connect to that week’s topic or to the other text you have read?
- What evidence do you have that the text you found is credible?
- Does the author present strong evidence to support his/her argument? Provide an example.
- Create a short synthesis paragraph on the one of the texts and your text.
Keep in mind that everyone else will see what you write below, so please keep it professional. This post is due Thursday, 12/6, by 5:00pm.
5) Come to class on Friday ready to discuss the reading and the text you found!
If you need support or have questions, my office hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 3:15-4:15 in Room 229.
The article that I have read this week was called "Grassroots Groups Have Taken Over Sandy Relief." This article was about the community of people that live in Gerttisen Beach, Brooklyn and how they were affected by the aftermath of Super-Storm Sandy. Gerttisen Beach was declared as a Zone B location. This declaration led many residents to remain at home during the storm. The effects of the storm had left the residents swimming in the flooded waters of Sandy to escape the monstrosity. After the flooding, FEMA was contacted, but did nothing to help. Left out to dry, the people of Gettisen Beach team up together "...acting as [their] own little city" to help each other with the supplies they had. Soon after, volunteers from outside Gerttisen Beach came to help as well. The article that I chose for this week connects to The Good Citizen because the way that Gerttisen Beach came together at a time of need and shared the little that they had with eachother shows the good citizens they are, as well as the volunteers from outside Gerttisen Beach. The article that I found this week is credible because the writter, Neil deMause, has been working as a Manhattan/Brooklyn based writer, covering stories on social policy issues. deMause also contribuites to other media outlets such as CNNMoney.com, Extra!, and others. deMause was also honored with the Project Censored Award. "The Good Citizen" stated "...they are willing to contribute their time and effort to make a difference." "Greenroots Group Take Over Sandy Relief" stated "Gerritsen residents began the process of sifting through their possessions...the effort was led less by government agencies than by members of the community themselves to find what was salvageable, the relief effort got underway." Together these two articles share the same idea; becoming a good citizen means becoming active in your community.
ReplyDeleteThe article I found which was relevant to the reading of Dalton’s “The Good Citizen” is “Five Ways to Fight Police Brutality” by Casey Gane-McCalla. McCalla’s writing is about ways citizens can speak up and fight against acts of police brutality. In the article McCalla includes the different ways citizens can participate in ways to stop and prevent police brutality, ways which include protesting, voting for politicians which oppose police brutality, even legal action against the police. Casey Gane-McCalla article connects to Dalton’s “The Good Citizen” in numerous ways such as explaining the importance of citizens having the right to stand up and fight for something they believe in or against. Both “The Good Citizen” and “Five Ways to Fight Police Brutality” include ways normal citizens can participate with helping promote certain organizations which would eventually contribute influentially into society. The article “Five Ways to Fight Police Brutality” by Casey Gane-McCalla is credible because it was published by News One Affluent. News One Affluent is a small news published branched off WordPress.com. In her article Casey Gane-McCalla supports and argues that the difference between a criminal suspect and a police officer is a great one. A person of color in a community may not represent each individual living in that area. but since a police officer wears a uniform and serves to protect under the law they represent the government, or more specifically the city in which their department is located. This is why McCalla believes that citizens should do more in order to spread the word about police brutality and share her ideas as to how they should do so. McCalla writes in her article, “Here are my 5 ways to stop police brutality; Protests, Record the Police, Vote Out Politicians Who Condone Police Brutality, Engage in Dialogue With the Cops, Take Legal Action Against the Police.” McCalla’s suggestions are actually good ways which civilians can get involved with actions regarding the awareness that police brutality is an issue and one that has to be detained.
ReplyDeleteBullying affects many people. The source I found this week focuses on bullying between siblings within their households. This trend has continued over time because parents are oblivious to what is happening. Many times, apologies are in store, but never happen. That is because many believe that forceful apologies are a violation of their freedom; an apology should be sincere and thoughtful. How do we fix wrong doings if apologizing should be voluntary?
ReplyDeleteIn chapter nine of “Justice” by Michael J Sandel, Sandel focuses on moral individualism. Individuals are born free and therefore have no obligations to apologies. According to Sandel, an apology means “honor[ing]… those who have suffered injustice… and to atone for those wrongs committed by those who inflicted the injustice or failed to prevent it,” (211). But, moral individualism makes the principles of apologies diminish as it is believed that no person should be obligated to apologize or to even honor others. If one does apologize, then it is because they did so with their free will. Enforcing those obligations onto people will deprive them of their freedom to choose for themselves. In one of the examples provided by Sandel, a scenario is shown: an individual protected his own brother by not telling the FBI where his brother was while they were searching to detain him. This is because that brother chose to honor family boundaries with his brother. He felt that his relationship with his brother was stronger than an arrest. This is very controversial; others feel like he should’ve turned his brother in because he was on the FBI’s most wanted list. The person did not apologize for not turning in his brother. That was his choice made by the freedom he was given. That is why Sandel argues that “the conception of freedom is flawed,” (241). But, what happens when this same scenario is applied to bullying amongst siblings?
The source I found this week is credible because it is a specialized web source that provides the latest news in psychological disorders (bullying being one of them). The site also provides research on this topic and provides statistics on how bullying emerges, the causes, the effects, and the goals we are no reaching for. Through submitting false information, the site will consequently ruin all of the research they have done because they will no longer be viewed as a credible and informative source.
In, “Bullying between Siblings”, Erika Krull concludes that the origin of sibling bullying revolves around moral purposes; the eldest thinking that it is their job to toughen up the youngest and the parents turning a blind eye because they secretly want the same outcome for their youngest. The effects of this are dire. That is why people believe that bullying should cease to exist and all transgressions be overturned through apologies. However, it is argued whether or not victimizers should apologize to their victims. Krull writes “Parents like these may truly believe they aren’t doing anything wrong… In fact, they may believe that if they interfere they will deprive their youngest the chance to learn about fighting back.” This mentality has to change. Because parents are neglecting this issue, the eldest child does not feel honor towards their family or that they are in any way, obligated to apologize to their sibling. Maybe the eldest sibling does not feel that it is their obligation to apologize anyways, but morally, they are not doing the right thing.
This is where Sandel will argue that the ideology of freedom is flawed. Individuals are given the freedom to choose who and when to apologize to. But with situations such as the one Krull presents, apologies are called for. Now there is the struggle between doing what is right and doing what you please as your freedom has allowed you to do. There is no way to completely change this, but there is a way where people can begin to recognize situations where they should feel obligated to apologize.
In the article of Dalton’s “ The Good Citizen” , Dalton shows various examples on what makes someone a good American citizen. In the article Dalton main question for the reader to think about is “ what makes someone a good American Citizen?” The article I found “ Storm charity :15% of what ” by Gina Bellafante shows the charity going around to help the people in need of help from hurricane sandy. The article shows there goal money they want to raise which is $1.7 million , they trying to do this by having concerts and doing other charities that would contribute to the amount of money they want to raise. Gina’s article connects to Dalton’s Good Citizen article because helping out people in need is an example of engage citizenship according to the Good Citizen “ Engage citizenship emphasizes a more assertive role for the citizen and a broader definition of the elements of citizenship to include social concerns and the welfare of others”. Based on that statement Gina article connects to it because of the charities being created and all of the volunteers helping other people that need help by bringing them to shelters. This article is credible because its from The New York Times newspaper which is a worldwide newspaper that has high reputation in bringing relevant news throughout the world especially in New York. This article is also credible because there charity are being promoted in famous sites such as Madison Square Garden arena as an ad tourist or anybody in general would hopefully sees this and contribute to the charity. Gina shows strong evidence in her article when she stated all the money collected from past storms that caused devastation. “ According to data from Indiana University's center on philanthropy , three weeks after the storm , $1.3 billion had raised , at the same point after the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 , $610 million , the figure for the 2010 earthquake in Haiti was $752 million.” This data shows how America shown an example of engaging citizenship by helping others in need. In the “ Good Citizen ” article it shows an example of engage citizenship in which volunteers of hurricane katrina show contribution and show fully engaged in society even though they didn’t vote they still made decision that brought America together in times of devastation and impacted the reputation of America in a positive way. This example is also shown in Gina’s article were they helping other in need as we speak showing that voting is not a major factor in being an American citizen bringing people together in difficult time shows that America is a whole , united as one at the end of the day.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/05/nyregion/volunteers-and-donations-flock-to-areas-affected-by-hurricane-sandy.html?_r=0
ReplyDeleteThis article talks about how many people were getting together in order to donate things for the people that were affected by hurricane Sandy in New York City. Especially for people that were affected like for example Staten Island where some people even needed comfort. Citizens united aware that there were many people in need so they wanted to help their city out. The Organizations that were helping out had many volunteers. This text connects to “Citizenship And the Transformation of American Society” because both have to do with engaged citizenship and involvement in the city which is increasing. This source is credible because its from a well known news organization called The New York Times which has been around since the 1800’s and is a very popular American newspaper website. The writer, Catherine Rampell has served as the founding editor of Economix, honored with an award from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, and graduated from Princeton University. Catherine Rampell presents strong evidence in her article about the engaged citizenship that was done during hurricane Sandy. “I really don’t think it’s the government’s job to take care of all this,” Mr. Niederhoffer said. “I wanted to see if it was possible for individuals to rally the way they used to. You know, in the 19th century when we had natural disasters there was no FEMA, but people still sent money and food to help.” Its up to the citizens to help each other in the time of need because we can't be depending on the government too much because we’ll never know how much we’re going to need and they will probably limit the amount of help they’ll give while citizens will help more, while on the other hand citizens just like us are willing to give up a lot in order to help those in need. “Volunteers Flock to Disaster Areas, Overwhelming City Relief Centers” and “Citizenship And the Transformation of American Society” both have the idea of American society sticking together and helping eachother out. For example in “Citizenship And the Transformation of American Society” the author states “There was a tremendous increase in the average standard of living as the American economy expanded”. Because of this increase in the economy people have been able to afford more things and also give to those in need. Both readings discuss the duty of citizens helping each other out whenever necessary.

ReplyDeleteThe article i chosed this week is called Child Obesity Risks Death at Early Age, Study Finds. I chosed this article because it gave me interesting facts such as that children with obesity die at a younger age and don’t get to reach the age of 55 years old. The reason why kids that are obese don’t get to live past 55 years old is because “Youngsters with a condition called pre-diabetes were at almost double the risk of dying before 55, and those with high blood pressure were at some increased risk.” I think kids that are overweight can’t last longer than 55 years old because as they start getting older the symptoms are going to get more stronger and then the medicine isn’t going to be as effective as when the user started taking it.That article is similar to another article I found in the New York Times called Method of Delivery May Affect Obesity Risk I chosed this article because the way a child is born will determine whether the kid will be obese. For example “By age 3, 15.7 percent of those children were obese. I found this interesting because obesity start at a every young age. I chosed these article because it connect to the next paper i am going to write about which is about health/obesity and this weeks reading which is talking about people transforming the american society. These sources are credible because is coming from the New York Times and the New York Times won’t lie because it will ruin their reputation and is also coming from Roni Caryn Rabin and Nicholas Bakalar. Roni Caryn Rabin was a reporter at Hunter college high school 2009-2011 and went to Oberlin college has a bachelor in english creative writing 1977-1981.Nicholas Bakalar worked for almost 20 years as an editor for Doubleday, HarperCollins, and other houses, acquiring both fiction and nonfiction books. The author does agree that obesity is bad because obesity can lead to multiple effects that can make the life span of a kid much shorter than a regular kid. And the author agrees with their argument because she says that the kids should go to the doctors and get checked and if they get the okay then there alright. These sources is similar to this weeks reading because in order to keep kids health they must make laws in which citizens agree to and make change.
The excerpt “The Good Citizen “by Russell J. Dalton is a book in which it introduce the real means of being a good citizens. The story within the excerpt illustrates the ways us New York citizens are changing our community. And throughout the article you would notice that Dalton list many ways that the citizens are changing the community.
ReplyDeleteBoth the book “ The good Citizen” By Russell J. Dalton and the article I found in RT.com named “ Lawmakers look to bring change to NYPD’s stop and frisk program”, both emphasizes the idea of wanting change and actually doing something about it. Also in which they the citizens are going to fix the issue at hand. The text “Lawmakers look to bring change to NYPD’s stop and frisk program” demonstrates how the people want to change the fact that the Stop and frisk situation because of the wrongful Stops and frisk that the NYPD has committed in the past years.
The source “Lawmakers look to bring change to NYPD’s stop and frisk program” is a credible source because because I encounter in the TV Network website RT.com, I believe that the source is credible mainly because when I did some research about the TV Network I found out that RT stands for Russia TV and RT.com is an international multilingual television network in which is founded by the Russian Federal Budget. And if the case ever presents its self in which the Network ever published any wrongful or inaccurate information, all the federal budget that the network receives would be shut down and this leading to the end of the Russian TV Network.
The article “Lawmakers look to bring change to NYPD’s stop and frisk program” helps promote the factual reasoning about the NYPD’S controversial stop and frisk process. The article implies many actions in which if enacted upon them we can get change the actions of the New York Police Department. For Example the article states that “lawmakers have already begun drafting a copy of the Community Safety Act … hearings will be held in order to encourage debate that would hopefully bring change.” This is one of the things that lawmakers are doing in order to create change in the NYPD. The community Safety Act is a legislation or law that its purpose is to fight the racial and discriminatory acts that the NYPD are held accountable for. This Act is beneficial to New York citizens because this Act is protecting New Yorkers against racial profiling. The article “Lawmakers look to bring change to NYPD’s stop and frisk program” also states that the same year that Michael Bloomberg took office “the number of citizens stopped and frisk by the police [rose] … a record of 684,330 encounters “ between the years 2002 and 2012. This quote is interesting because this puts a strange thought into your mind in which you’ll suspect that Bloomberg might be the cause of this outburst of racial profiling.
The article “Lawmakers look to bring change to NYPD’s stop and frisk program” introduces ways I which the court justice is willing to help change the NYPD controversial Stop and frisk procedure. This article connects to this week article on Dalton’s “The Good Citizen’ mainly because it talks about what it takes to be a good citizen and this text helps me question whether the New York Police Department falls into the Good Citizen Category.
The article I found was “Changes in men’s and women’s labor force participation rates “by Mitra Toossi. Mitra Toossi talks about how the population of working mean is decreasing and the women population of working is increasing. She also talks about how this trend will continue throughout the years up to 2050. She touches up on the Social Security Act which was amended in 1960 to make individuals less than 50 years of age eligible for disability payments.
ReplyDeleteThe article connects to this week’s topic because it discusses on citizenship and on American society. Both articles talk about how women labor force has increased from women being housewife’s to actually doing jobs outside the house and having their own political identities.
This source is credible because it comes from the United States of Labor which we all know the United States won’t give false statements. Mitra Toossi is a very know author, she earned Certified Scrum Master; she was also the manager in projects and knowledge. She went to school in the university of southern California and in university of Florida.
The author does present strong evidence to support her argument on the increase of women in labor force. As Mitra Toossi stated” Women’s labor force participation, which was at a rate of 33.9 percent in 1950, increased significantly during the 1970s and 1980s, climbing to 57.5 percent in 1990. In 1999, the women’s participation rate reached a peak of 60 percent”. Here she is stating the statics of how the women labor force has raised during the past years. This is important because this was due to the baby boomers reaching the age of working now increasing the participation of women in the force. He also states “The impact of the baby-boom generation on the composition and growth of the labor force will continue to be a key factor. As this large cohort ages, the increase in the share of the older labor force and, eventually, the exit of the baby-boom cohort from the workforce will be the main factor in lowering the growth of the labor force”. Here she is stating that if the labor force keeps on increasing they are going to find a way in lowering it. In my point of view they might be unemploying people like the government is doing right now because there’s too many people and not enough jobs.
The increase of women labor force has been a major issue for many years even when women gain independence. The Good Citizen stated” the change in social status of women also affects their citizenship traits. For instance, the educational levels of women have raise even more rapidly than men. Mitra Toossi will agree with this because the women labor force is increasing due to the women stepping their game up to show men women can do things men can do. This is shown right now in our society now you see women as officers, fire fighters and mechanics. Mitra Toossi reads, “The decline in the men’s labor force participation rate is expected to continue; it is projected to be 70 percent in 2020 and 66 percent in 2050”. Here she shows how the women will be doing more jobs just as the men are doing, making the percentage of men labor force decrease and increasing the women labor force.
The text that I found was about The Dream Act not being passed. Many immigrant families were hoping that their children can go to college. Christine Quinn believes that The Dream Act should be passed. Everyone should have the opportunity to get an education. This text connects to the text we read because it also talks about education and how people with different races might not get the same equal education as others. It said that “race, class, and education are also closely intertwined within the American public.” Immigrants would be a part of that group because they don't have equal opportunities to a higher education like College.Immigrants are not provided with financial aid from the government and they are forced to work instead of studying. This text is credible because it is from NYC.gov which is a local official website. It was written by Christine Quinn who is a City Council Speaker. The author presents strong evidence to support her argument because she talks about The Dream Act decreasing the deficit. She stated that “It would have provided a rational, sensible and humane approach to how we deal with immigration reform and would have reduced the federal deficit by $2.2 billion over the next 10 years.” The text I found supports The Dream Act and as engaged citizens people should support these immigrants that need help to be able to get an education. Christine said that “the U.S. Senate failed to move this legislation forward and provide thousands of young students across the nation a path to improve their lives as well as contribute to our nation.” These engaged citizens should stand up for those who need it.In the class article it says that “Engaged Citizenship emphasizes a more assertive role for the citizenship to include social concerns and the welfare of others. As it was said before, many people are not getting a higher education because of their race. These immigrants should not have to worry about their education because they are undocumented. Everyone has the right to an education and The Dream Act is a social problem that needs to be fixed. The American public is not willing to help those that want an education because they are undocumented. They need to think about how these immigrants are helping the nation’s economy and consider helping them.

The article that I found is call “Protesters of Police Stop-and-Frisk Practice Are Arrested” from the New York Times. Noah Rosenberg wrote about 30 people and the Civil Rights campaigner were arrested in Harlem while they they were protesting against stop and frisk. The connection between this text and the class text is that they both have to do with engaged citizens going against something that they don't find good for their community. Also just like the engaged citizens from the class text are losing faith in the government which they are the body of law, so are the engaged citizens from the New York Times text losing faith on the police which are the ones who enforce the laws. The article if from the New York Times which is a well known newspaper that if it doesn't give credible news, it will lose supporters. The author Noah Rosenberg uses quotes from New York’s Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Princeton professor Cornel West to support his argument. Both of the authors from the class text, the article that I found would agree that the engaged citizens are losing their faith on the government and on the police. “ … young Americans are dropping out of politics, losing faith in government,” (3). The engaged citizens don't believe that their representatives are doing the task that they have to better the community of the people and feel that they have to take action for themselves. Also some of the engaged citizens feel like they are being left out or discriminated against by laws or law enforcement. “ voiced anger about the policy, which they said was racist, intimidating and unjust...” (Rosenberg 1). With the engaged citizens losing their faith on government and police, this two groups of laws are going to have to fix their actions in order to win back the faith of the engaged citizens.
ReplyDeleteThe New York Times article that I found “Volunteers Flock to Disaster Areas , Overwhelming City Relief Centers” by Catherine Rampell is based on the reactions and contributions on highly affected areas of Hurricane Sandy after it struck the city of New York.Volunteers and businesses did things like donate and help out in these areas that were most damaged by the disastrous Hurricane that terrorized most of the eastern part of the country.Chapter number one of the book “The Good Citizen” by Russell J. Dalton is about describing the good citizen and the contribution of the public to their society with things like statistics to back up what is being described in the chapter. One example is when a graph is shown in figure 1.4 that demonstrates the change in occupation of the men in our society , its showed that since 1952 to the 2000 the percentage of male that are employed decreased. The overall feel of chapter one of “The Good Citizen” by Russell J. Dalton is how the people contribute to our society and help build the community. Both Volunteers Flock to Disaster Areas , Overwhelming City Relief Centers” by Catherine Rampell and Chapter number one of the book “The Good Citizen” by Russell J. Dalton both talk about the contribution of the public to our society and in the article I research it specifically talked about the contribution of the citizen during a natural disaster. The article I found in New York Times is credible not only because it is a New York Times article but also because the author Catherine Rampell is a writer that focuses on economics and also she had been honored with an award by the American Business Editors and Writers which clearly means that she knows what she is talking about . In the article i researched Catherine Rampell quotes the words of a person considered a “good citizen” and it she quoted “It feels like we all had the same impulse: This is my city and I want to do something to help it,” and connects both the article i researched and the chapter of the week in class .Catherine Rampell supports the evidence in her article by bringing up this like evidence from news reports from mayor Michael Bloomberg which indicate that she just didn't come up with random information on her own. Overall both writing pieces describe actions of the “good citizen” and also use statistics to defend their position.

The Text I found is College and Career Readiness Measures Remain Low publish by The State [Of New York] Education Department (NYSED). This Article is about the graduation rate of 2007 cohorts (students who entered 9th grade during 2007) who graduated in 2012 has resin compare to previous years and also how the graduation rate for New York State 19.9%, the second biggest state jump out of the 50 states in just a . Although graduation rate has increased,25% of those graduating students aren`t not college or careers ready. This article also touches on subject of the gap economically between color and white students, how white students are usually more successful in school then color students.
ReplyDeleteThis article College and Career Readiness Measures Remain Low relates to my groups research on NYC Graduation rate and how it is lower compare to other states because this text reinforces/demonstrates the fact that NYC students aren't where they are supposed to be in order to graduate from high school. Both these text are also similar in the that White Students really do better than color Students because of the financial difference.
College and Career Readiness Measures Remain Low is a credible source because it was published by NYSED (State Education Department). The New York State Education Department is part of the University of the State of New York (USNY), one of the most complete, interconnected systems of educational services in the United States. Their mission is to raise the knowledge, skill, and opportunity of all the people in New York. This department's vision is to provide leadership for a system that yields the best educated people in New york State.
The NYSED provide strong evidence to back up the fact that Students in New york aren't college ready or Career ready. This is evident when the publisher Quotes John B. King, Jr. “Our students are competing globally...[competing globally] demands that we close the achievement gap and make sure students who do graduate are ready for college and careers”. While we are closing that gap our New york Passing stander is a 65%, that is good enough for New Yorker but not good enough for the rest of world who passing standard is higher than a 65%, even some schools standards are higher than 65%. 65% being the limit on passing sets a mind set on students that they ONLY have to get a 65%.
Both The Good Citizens and College And Career Readiness Measures Remains Low demonstrate the importance of the need of getting a good education in order to e a good citizen. Because being educated allows individuals to be more aware of their surrounding, and eventually as proven in The Good Citizens Figure 3.7 it shows that Engaged Citizenship are often more Educated/have higher level education. And on the College And Career Readiness Measures Remain Low show the improvement in the Graduation rate in the state of New York and if this keeps on this will eventually lead to more Engaged Citizen.
My issue for this upcoming paper is Law Enforcement. The main thing that I am concentrated on this general topic is Stop and Frisk . This situation is turning into a problem since the ones that are being targeted the most are the Blacks and Latinos. The article “The human Impact Impact” written by Sarah Hogarth is the voice of the people that have been stopped and frisked. The main point of this article is for people to protest and stand up for their rights. This article also explains how most citizen of new york city are afraid of speaking to the police because they are the one’s that are taking them out on the streets with no reason at all and how they should protest. This source is found credible because is a website from the government and includes laws and places where press conferences are being held about this issue.Sarah Hogarth uses strong evidence because she quotes victims of that have been stopped and frisked and they speak about their situation. This connects “The Good Citizens” because it speaking about how different citizens represent a community. How even protesting for something you believe isn’t right makes you a good citizen because you're questioning authority and helping out the community for law to be improved or enforced.
ReplyDeleteThe article I found is called “Young Americans less interested in the environment than previous generations.” It talks about how the younger generation has become less involved in the environment. The article focused a lot on the huge change in younger generation, because when the older generations was young they were really environmentally involved in things, like keeping the community clean. This article provides statistics of the younger generation who aren't involved Environmentally.
ReplyDeleteThis reading connects to this weeks topic in the reading of “Citizenship and the Transformation Of American Society”. This reading talks about how the American Democracy is at risk, because Americans are getting less and less involved in Politics.
This article is credible because it comes from a good news organization that focuses problems happening nationwide. The organization also focuses on leadership programs for the youth like YDJP program which is a development program that offers training and education to young students want to be journalists in the future.
The author provides evidence by focusing on the three types of young generations which are baby boomers, Generation X and Millennials. According to the article decades ago “ about a third of young baby boomers said it was important to become personally involved in programs to clean up the environment. In comparison, only about a quarter of young Generation X members — and 21 percent of Millennials — said the same”. But when you compare it to the statistics of modern generations we find that “15 percent of Millennials said they had made no effort to help the environment, compared with 8 percent of young Generation X members and 5 percent of young baby boomers. Millennials also were the least likely to say they had made an effort to conserve electricity and fuel used to heat their homes.”
The author also notes that these statistics were taken before the Country’s most recent recession hit.
These two articles compare to each other because the both talk about how the younger generation has become less involved in the real important stuff like the environment and the politics it is very important that we focus on getting the younger generation involved in it, because soon they become the older generation who are giving examples to the new generation, leading to the new generation not getting involved in the politics or environment and other community issues either.
The article I choose is called "Police Arrest Suspects in Tel Aviv Bus Blast, Including Israeli Citizen." Written by Isabel Keshner. This article has to do with bombing which injured 21 people, was regarded as a terrorist act and was the first such attack to strike the Mediterranean city in more than six years. This article connects to the reading we read on chapter 1"Citizenship and the Transformation of American Society." They connect because the first article talks about how people in Israeli are being terrorist and are being a bad citizenship because they are bombing their own place/community. Meaning they are no helping each other. Its quoted "Arab village in northern Israel, who was originally from Beit Laqiya but who had become and Israeli citizen through a family unification program." This article expresses thoughts and opinions on how the author views Israeli citizenship. While the second article talks about how "good citizen" society is today and how americans has helped others in many bad situations that has happened in the past within the U.S. For example it states that "Indeed, the gist of the article was that volunteering in 2005 was at its highest percentage in the 25 years of the college survey." The article I found online is credible because it is branched from the New York Times, a universal newspaper that is strongly trusted. The article however comes from the Middle East informer another newspaper online that is always tide to the New York Times making it credible as well. Both of these article is one giving negative thoughts on citizenship. My article I found is one that is giving negativity because its showing how terrorism is happening within their own community and its also showing how other citizens are trying to bomb places in their country messing up their citizenship among each other. In the other hand the chapter 1 I read from the novel it stating that americans do care about citizenship. And that americans have been a source of help for many places that has been damage. We have had many volunteers go out their way to help others that need it and for example on the hurricane Katrina americans help people that had no more homes or food to eat. These article have different argument about citizenship and different opinion on how its been useful and disappointing.
ReplyDeleteThe article I read was called The Scars of Stop-and-Frisk by Julie Dressner and Edwin Martinez. This article discusses how Law enforcement police take advantage of their authority and sometimes pass the line. They stop and check random men which isn't bad but its been noticed its a certain group of young men. Black and Latinos are targeted by police and stopped very frequently to be checked and questioned. Dressner stated "Last year, police officers in New York City stopped and frisked people 685,724 times. Eighty-seven percent of those searches involved blacks or Latinos," As seen in this source of evidence whites are not targeted as much as Blacks and Latinos they are obviously stopping by race and not by actual fault or criminality. This connects to this weeks topic of problems in our city neighborhoods such as Washington Height , Brooklyn and other racial locations always have more cops than places where white Americans live. We are often abused because of our nationality and because of where we come from. Action isn't always taken because people don't expect to get much out of it. Stop and Frisk is a huge controversial problem in many places it not only should be vanished but it should only be done when its needed. This is very sick and it negatively affects the group of young men enduring this abuse. They are emotionally impacted and this contributes to why they think of themselves in a negative way. The article is Credible because it was from the New York times and it is a well trusted organization. It also has many quotes and hyperlinks. The source also makes sure to use valid proof by mentioning the young victims impacted by these hate crimes. This article has a very strong argument because its tone of seriousness provides a clear view to the readers. Stop and frisk is impacting our society in many childish negative ways
ReplyDeleteThe article i am reading is called “Women Organize Online Hurricane Relief Hub” which is about how a group a women decided to start a facebook page which was design to help out victims of hurricane Sandy. It all started a week after Hurricane Sandy which the main goal of this site is to get supplies such as food warm clothing and also shelters for lost pets which it also interesting that they are also helping animals. This article connects to “The Good Citizen” because the woman saw an opportunity to help out the community because they saw that people were in need of food shelter and warm clothing. They decided to do this just for the satisfaction of knowing that they are doing something right it relates to the article “The Good Citizen” because they volunteer on their own which i think this shows how people are developing throughout the years and are really becoming that person in a community that cares about the people in it. This text is credible because it has hyperlinks that support the article to find more information and also the author Elizabeth Hagen is author that has a varied number of articles writing for the New York Times. The author Elizabeth Hagen supports her article by providing the official Facebook page in the article and also by posting pictures of the help which includes clothing given away and also food being given to the people.
ReplyDeleteIn the article “The Good Citizen” it talk about how people are developing by helping their community without having to be forced they do it because they notice that people that get hurt are in need of more things than others which i think this makes a good citizen. In the article “Women Organize Online Hurricane Relief Hub” it talks about how a Facebook page is helping sandy victims. “The women said they are prepared to keep up their efforts until recovery is complete and will pay attention to changing needs”. (Elizabeth Hagen) This show that the women are not gonna give up until they start to see change and until people could carry on with their lifes.

An article that I found is named “5 Ways to Fight Police Brutality” by Casey Gane-McCalla from newsone.com. McCalla is telling us in some ways that we are are able to fight police brutality which is about how police official are overusing their power mainly on people of color and thats against the law makes that kind of racist without really breaking the law. This source relates to the blog reading in that because it talks about the citizenship and the rights that one has and promoting it. This is a credible site because it’s known for having credible news story that are up to date and information for African Americans.Casey Gane-McCalla is a credible author since he graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Political Science. An example of this from the text is “people today are better educated have more information available to them” this example from this week text just lets us know that people are getting much smarter because of the thing that they are listing to around them and watching for example people are learning how to fight against police brutality without really getting in trouble “Police stations, city hall and other government venues must be protested against and marched on after every incident of police brutality”. This quote relate to this week text because it’s talking about one of the rights that we have and a way in using it. The author use evidence that let us know what are things that we can do like talking to the state representative about police brutality. These sources connect because they both talk about how people can either become more engaged in politics or are to defend themselves and how that has open doors for them like education opportunity and job opportunity. A police officer would just say that they are doing thier job and just trying to stop and curious activity that they think might happen and that the person that they are beating was resisting. While the person that was being beaten says that he was actually not doing anything and just got beat for no apparent reason. Both of these text relate to this class discussion because they both make argument on how people are learnig to us their right in a good way
ReplyDelete1. The article I found is “Does the Internet make for more engaged citizens? For many youth, the answer is yes, according to a new study by civic learning scholars.” This article talks about how the young people who pursue their interests on the internet are more likely to be engaged in civic and political issues. Young people who use the internet are also more likely to be exposed to diverse political viewpoints. This is what a study shows by a group of civic learning scholars. Teaching new media literacies such as credibility assessment is essential for 21st century citizenship. The study is unique, tracking hundreds of students over time and asking about online practices and civic and political engagement. Overall, more than 2,500 youth were surveyed and more than 400 youth were followed for several years.
ReplyDelete2. This article connects to what we are learning in class this week because it talks about engaged citizens. Engaged Citizen may protest, advocated and also boycotting. The article “Does the Internet make for more engaged citizens? For many youth, the answer is yes, according to a new study by civic learning scholars.” talks about how young people can become engaged citizens just by using the internet. In class we need to pick a subject that we don't like the way its doing and find information about it so we can have an ideal to change it. The article I found talks about how young people need to be aware of what is going on in there area.
3. The article I found came from YPP(Youth & Participatory Politics). Youth and Participatory Politics explores the intersection of youth, new media, and political life. YPP’s research focuses on youth engagement with digital media and participatory politics because youth are central to this emerging political landscape. John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur are the funders of this website. MacArthur is one of the nation's largest independent foundations. Through the support it provides, the Foundation fosters the development of knowledge, nurtures individual creativity, strengthens institutions, helps improve public policy, and provides information to the public, primarily through support for public interest media.
4. The authors of this articles use strong evidence because they use a study to support what they are talking about in this article. “We followed the same youth for up to 3.5 years. We assessed whether particular kinds of online activities were associated with increased or decreased youth civic and political activity,” when this organization studies the person they followed that person from a certain time to check if they are more active in been an engaged citizen. The study results and launch further investigations into the ways in which the Internet and digital media are impacting democratic and political engagement, particularly among youth.
5. In class and in the article talks about how how we as young people need to be award of what is going on in our community. I do believe that this generation needs to be award of what is going on in the area that they living in. If they don't like what is happening than they have an ideal to change it and make it better. In class we need to find a lot of information to find the best solution. If a lot of young people know do something in their community than they are going to Inspiring a lot of more people to become leaders in their community.
The text that I found relating to Dalton’s The Good Citizen and my topic of education was “The Rankings” by the United States Health Rankings. On this website they show the High School graduation rate of every state from 1990 to 2011. This text connects to Dalton’s The Good Citizen because in both texts they talk about people not having the education that they should have. In “The Rankings” the graph shows that every state’s graduation rank has gone up since 2010. For example in 2010 New York’s rank was 40 at a value of 68.8%, in 2011 New York’s rank was 40 at an increased value of 70.9%. The percentage might not seem like much because it is only about 1% but when you think about New York state as a whole it means more. There is about 1,000,000 students in the New York City school system, that's not even half the amount of students in the whole state. So for New York's rank as a state going up means that most New York schools are having more kids graduate. This source is credible because it shows the graduation rank for the whole nation and it shows how the rank changes over time. Another reason why this source is credible is because it is a organization that is partnered with the United States government, The American Public Health Association and Partnership for Prevention. If this website posted any false information, controversy and distrust would occur against the United States government. The author does use good evidence to prove their point by using statistics. For example, “Almost 75% of incoming ninth graders in the U.S. graduate within four years from a high school with a regular degree.” By using this percentage the reader gets a better feeling of the text. In Dalton’s The Good Citizen” and “The Rankings” both talk about graduation rates and ranks in the United States. Both authors would agree that today's educated children are the most advanced in history, but in order to keep this the way it is the next generations will have to work to keep the graduation rank up and to also be the newest most educated generation.
ReplyDeleteIn “Stop-and-Frisk Campaign: About the Issue” by New York Civil Liberties Union explains how Stop and Frisk has raised a question about how this law is racially profiling people by race. The hundreds of stops made in a day are especially amongst Blacks and Latinos. This relates to “ Citizenship and the transformation of American Society” it is explained how the engaged citizen will fight for their natural rights. The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) shows that “In the first nine months of 2012, New Yorkers were stopped by the police 443,422 times, 392,897 were totally innocent (89 percent). 237,314 were black (55 percent). 139,230 were Latino (32 percent).” These statistics show that citizens are being subject to police stops and being frisked for unknown reasons. This text is credible because is written by the New York Civil Liberties Union which was founded in 1951 and it is the Civil Liberty Union of New York state. The NYCLU gets its data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports, this isn't bias because they FBI isn't directly arresting people in the community. When the NYPD says a Myth the actual FBI shows their statistics to the NYCLU to prove the NYPD wrong. As for the NYPD they will be bias since they will try and show that they had a reason to stop and Frisk these people.
ReplyDeleteThis is a discriminatory act by NYPD, and they are racially profiling blacks and Hispanics. Stated by the FBI in NYCLU “... black and Latino residents made up close to 90 percent of people stopped, and about 88 percent of stops – more than 3.8 million – were of innocent New Yorkers.” In “Citizenship and the transformation of American Society” Dalton will say that engaged citizens will boycott, protest and fight for their rights because they are being violated by the NYPD.
The article I have found talks about students donating cans of food for the homeless or the holiday season. There objective as a school is to collect has much of cans as they can. It’s a school trying to make a change. This school starts from preschool to high school and collected a total of 1700 cans.
ReplyDeleteThis text connects to this week’s topic because we have talked about duty vs. engaged citizenship. This article mentions mostly engaged citizens and what they are capable of doing. The article is short but still provides information about the students and their engagement. It’s mentioning the top points of being an engaged student.
This source is credible because it comes from a school website. The school is called Mount Vernon Presbyterian School and is from Atlanta Georgia. The school updates their activities and the student’s achievements. There’s no specific author but must be an employee from the school that would update their school information.
There’s no specific author but the writer uses some statistics of each grade level of what they have done. Also uses few quotes from few student s and their opinions of what they have done. An example of the writer using numbers is when mentions the grades numbers of cans. The grade level with the most cans donated is the lower school with a total of 686, which is the 40% of the total. The author also describes some pattern and differences between each grade level.
The author from this week’s text talk about how the duty-based citizens are criticizing the next generation. But the article from Mount Vernon Presbyterian School proves them wrong to what the duty-based citizens say. The duty citizens say, “young are the primary source of this decline” (The Good Citizen). They mean that the young ones or the new generation are lacking in their responsibilities on politics. But in the article would say there wrong because the next generation has a different view towards becoming a good citizen. The next generation is being active and helping others, “Students of all ages were engaged citizen leaders as they provided needed supplies for the hungry and the homeless in the upcoming holidays”. The next generation calls this the engaged citizenship, which means being more active and not only caring about themselves but as well the rest of the citizens living in the country.
ReplyDeleteThe text I found is called “ New York City high school graduation rate up, but 75% of students not prepared for college” and it was published on June 14, 2011. This article talks about how the city’ s graduation rate continues to improve, but only a few numbers of those students finishing high school are suitable for college. Some state officials will address this issue when figures are released. An engaged citizen is a person that protests, boycotts and researches a subject they are interested in. I’m an engaged citizen because I’m researching an issue I’m concerned about, education. As an engaged citizen I’ve taken ownership towards changing the graduation rates and preparing high school students for college, by organizing from NY city. This an example of an engaged citizen because these states officials are really concerned on how the government is focusing on the improvement towards increasing the graduation rates. Also this connects with one of the political consequences, trust in government. This means trust is decreasing in politics and government. Specifically, since the Department of Education isn’t doing it’s job in preparing high school students for college this means that the trust people had in the government will decrease. I consider this article to be credible because it’s from a new website, which was found in 1919 by Joseph Patterson. Over one million people visit this website everyday. The argument of the article I picked out was that the graduation rate needs to increase. One way it needs to be changed is by providing students with college level work to prepare them for college.
The less education you have the less engaged you are. This means you as an individual wouldn’t be receiving much, like extra help for your education. Your political powers are also weakened because you’re aren’t taking steps towards improving your education and setting up for a better future. One example of an engaged citizen is “The states is rolling out two new measurements of whether kids are prepared for higher education using the number of regents exams taken and their scores”. This shows how the government is engaging to the student’s education by looking and analyzing on how they can prepare high schoolers better for college and their future. Additionally another example of engaged citizen is “ The young man had organized a group of students volunteers, who then gave up their break to do hard labor in the devastated region far from their campus”. This man took ownership to set up a group in which was designed to change something they thought needed to be changed.

ReplyDeleteIn the article “Local Citizens Are Social for Hurricane Sandy Relief” by Michael Shashoua writes how the social media was used by local citizens to help others who were affected by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Shashoua gives an example of a group of young Girl Scout troops wanting to help Nishuane Elementary School in Montclair, New Jersey. The New Jersey school was damaged by Hurricane Sandy and looted of Mac computers. One of the girls, Giovanna Mullen, used the social media for help to collect donations using twitter and facebook. Shashoua also writes that the donations was a success and the girls decided to help other schools as well.
This article connects to Dalton’s The Good Citizen because in the book, Dalton question whether being a good citizen is to be involved with politics, or involved with their community and helping others.
In the article, Shashoua explains that the Girl Scout caught the attention of NBC and Chelsea Clinton, proving his argument on how the social media is used to reach others for a cause.
In Dalton’s The Good Citizen and Shashoua’s article both confirm that there are citizens who are more engaged to help others. Everyone has a choice on whether or not to be engaged on politics or others. However, “One perspective says American democracy is ‘at risk’ in large part because of the changing values and participation patterns of the young”(Dalton). This explains the view on what is more important to this generation, leading to believe that the value of American democracy leisurely decrease.
Michael Shashoua has written for Clickz, a website that publishes marketing news and expert advice about politics, advocacy, and more.
The article, "Lessons Learned from Launching a Proven Educational Model in a City That Needs It," written by Bryce Bowman, informs the reader that Bowman himself took his time to teach at nearby public schools. Not only does he help with their academic performance, but he communicates with students by having a close relationship with them. This reiterates the idea that being a good citizen does not only mean being involved in political practices, but also helping out your community for the positive impact that comes from the morality of the choice.
ReplyDeleteBoth “Lessons Learned from Launching a Proven Educational Model in a City That Needs It” and The Good Citizen written by Russell Dalton discuss the concept of how Citizens should actually participate in their community for the benefit of the community. For example, Russell Dalton discusses the fact of those individuals having more education are more aware of the problems in their community and often have the greater possibility to participate to fix or improve the community problems. In “Lessons Learned from Launching a Proven Educational Model in a City That Needs It”, Bow is an example of a role model of an actual dedicated citizen instead of only being a duty based citizen who only takes part in elections.
The publisher of this article is credible because The Huffington Post is an American website that was founded in 2005 which covers politics and has a high reputation, being #1 on the 15 Most Popular Political Sites over the internet for local news. Adding on, Bryan Bowman is essential to the source’s credibility because Bowman is responsible for being the Executive Director of Citizen Schools Illinois, a nonprofit organization narrowing the achievement gap for Chicago Public School students by expanding their learning day, which exemplifies how engaged citizens differ from duty citizens.
The author of “Lessons Learned from Launching a Proven Educational Model in a City That Needs It” reiterates the fact that Bowman saw the problems that affected his community by stating, “Then I read an article which described how only six in 100 Chicago Public Schools students will graduate from college by the age of 25” (Bowman). This itself is enough for the author to realize how much of a problem the education system is around the Chicago area is because only a small percentage of the student population graduates from college. He soon provokes his own reformation of this problem by moving towards a Citizen School, which is a non-profit organization that collects volunteers to help low income students. This proves that Bowman’s commitment to help those low income individuals, which emphasizes the differences between being an engaged citizen and a duty based citizen.
Both “Lessons Learned from Launching a Proven Educational Model in a City That Needs It” and The Good Citizen validate the importance of being a citizen because both value the importance of being a dedicated citizen to the community by stating out the problems and taking actions to reform. This indicates how individuals who are more aware over time can benefit the country because they are aware of problems and are influences for change, drawing more people to benefit the community. The Good Citizen highlights how this generation is far more different than previous generations, stating, “the steady march of generations across time has important implications for norms of citizenships. Anyone born before 1926 grew up and became socialized in a much different political context, where citizens were expected to be dutiful” (The Good Citizen). While in "Lessons Learned from Launching a Proven Educational Model in a City That Needs It" highlight Bowman himself by stating his accomplishments, stating, “Happily, there was no one else providing the combination of extended learning time, academic support, 21st century skill-building, and hands-on learning opportunities offered by Citizen Schools” (Dowman).

ReplyDeleteThe article “A Young Immigrant Struggles for a College Education” by Mimi Schiffman is describing how an immigrant passes through many difficult stages in order to be enrolled in college so he can have an opportunity to improve his education for his future. This article connects to the following text of this week, which is a chapter from the piece of literature called The Good Citizen by Russell J. Dalton, because this article demonstrates that it’s against citizenship. Immigrants may be considered a lower class than citizens, but that doesn’t mean that immigrants don’t deserve the same respect and rights as citizens. Everyone was born equal; no one was born with more power than another individual. Therefore, everyone should be treated equally. The chosen article is credible because it’s from New York Times which is a popular organization. If the New York Times would post false information, the amount of their viewers would drastically decrease. Mimi Schiffman presents strong evidence to support her argument in various ways. For example, Schiffman mentions that, “More than four millions illegal immigrants under the age of 25 are thought to be living in the United States according to 2009 census figures, yet statistics indicate that only around 65,000 graduate from high school each year”. This shows that Schiffman has proof that the education based on immigrants is not doing so well and because of that, it has been affecting the amount of graduates at the end of each year. Schiffman also provides examples from immigrants that are involves in similar situations like this. By using various examples of other individuals, it is a great way to prove the point you are trying to make. Therefore, citizenship is not spread equally throughout the United States, especially when it comes to education. Education should be provided for every individual, regardless of their status living in the United States. Every individual has the right to be provided with many things to learn so they can all create a path in order to make themselves a better person throughout the future. In other words, citizenship is not being used correctly in the United States and there should a solution as soon as possible because it is horribly affecting the innocent immigrants and that is not a right thing to do.
1. The article I found is called “Transforming Immigrants into Engaged Citizens” This article talk about the steps taken by PICO affiliate North Valley Sponsoring Committee in 2001 to help immigrants become citizens in Northern California. Following their success, their program was emulated in Los Angeles. It is now being adapted again in five Bay Area counties in California where seven PICO affiliates are joining forces to train 350 volunteers, mobilize 45,000 people, help 5,000 legal permanent residents apply for citizenship, and provide advanced leadership training to 500. What all three campaigns have in common is this one overarching goal to help immigrants integrate and be effective in addressing local policy issues.
ReplyDelete2. The article “Transforming Immigrants into Engaged Citizens” connects to what we are reading in class this week because they both talk about Engaged Citizen, when people are advocating to help their area. An Engaged Citizen is when people advocated, contacted, boycotted, and protest. PICO is an engaged organization because they are trying to help immigrants become citizens. This organization believes that immigrants are more aware of what's going on in the world they will be more engaged/involved.
3. PICO affiliate LA Voice adopted the NVSC model. The organization partnered with Univision’s ¨Ya Es Hora ¡CiudanÃa!¨ (“It’s About Time! Citizenship!”) campaign for messaging to reach as wide a Hispanic audience as possible to become engaged citizen. Other partners included Los Angeles City College, Santa Monica City College, and many more. This article came from GCIR, “a growing network of foundations working on a wide range of immigration and immigrant integration issues including education, health, employment, civic participation, race and intergroup relations, and other concerns affecting immigrant children, youth, and families.”
4. Frances Caballo states "At least they start to hear about organizing and realize that they have to become involved in their communities," this is strong evidence because the author is defining the meaning of Engaged Citizen. A second strong example is when the authors says “they start to see this country as their own and they become more active in the community.” the author is saying that people need to see what is going on their community so they can help improve their
area.
5. What we learned in class and the article “Transforming Immigrants into Engaged Citizens” both are talk about how people can become engage in their community to improve it. If more people know what is going on in their area than they are going to be interested in improving their community. I believe that community need to be inspiring others to help their homes to improve it.
This week I choose a website instead of a specific article because the website has to do with education and connects to Dalton’s chapter on “The Good Citizen”. Basically what Timeforcitizenship.org does is give examples of qualities that make up a good citizen, by children from around the country. This website connects to this week’s reading because it expresses the new ideas the new generation has on the meaning of being a “good citizen”. This source is credible because it is used as reference for other teachers and students to view. It is filled with different views on different topics, and projects, and brings out brilliant ideas from both students and teachers which others are able to learn from, and have access to at any time. Liam McGurrin the creator of the website doesn’t really show an argument. However he does do a good job of making a statement and connecting it to what other kids or teachers around the country have to say about it. McGurrin’s website has great connections to points Dalton makes in his chapter. Dalton expresses the change in the new generations view on “good citizenship” going from “duty –based citizenship”, which does the basics in the community which is support a of a political party, voting for it and paying taxes. To “engaged citizenship” which “emphasizes a more assertive role for the citizen and broader definition of elements of citizenship to include social concerns and the welfare of others”. All while McGurrin’s website reflects on the new ideas of the youth. As quoted by some kids a good citizen has to be “Someone who respects people, someone who has 'empathy' for other people, we need good citizens to help people who cannot help themselves” (Wimbledon Park 1).” Dalton supports the changes the youth is making in order to be a “good citizenship” and McGurrin gives examples of how the youth plans on making it happen. Both authors give examples of how the definition of “good citizenship” has evolved over time. Bother authors would agree with each other on these points because everything changes over time especially how the public views different ideas, or thoughts and when the idea of “good citizenship” comes up, there are disagreements between the older generation and the newer one.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/28/nyregion/civilian-complaint-review-board-gets-new-powers-to-prosecute-new-york-police.html?partner=rss&emc=rss&_r=0
ReplyDeleteIn the article I found called "Independent Agency Gets New Powers to Prosecute New York Police Officers " by Al Baker, talks about how the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) "... independent agency [CCRB] that investigates allegations of police abuse in New York have been given wide new powers to prosecute officers in misconduct cases under an agreement city officials ". The CCRB is a committee that led by civilians that review complaints made against Police officers and take necessary actions if needed . It is a great step for putting those who abuse our trust behind bars that was prosecuted by their own departments prosecutors which can seem a little bias.
This agreement is a great example of Russell Dalton’s idea of an engaged citizen in his book “The Good Citizen”. In class we have been reading Dalton’s book and this draws the attention to what every citizen should be doing what the CCRB have been doing, Making their voices heard about problems in their community/city and making a solution to it. Dalton talks about how raising awareness to a problem in the community and making a stand, will ultimately make a change that will benefit the community.
This article can be proven credible because it is published by the New York Times. The New York Times is a well respected newspaper that have been around since 1851 and has won 108 Pulitzer prizes. The writer of this article has been writing for the New York Times since 2000 and a graduate of State University of New York at Albany, has also worked at two tabloid newspapers: The Daily News and Newsday, where he was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1997 for coverage of the crash of TWA Flight 800 off East Moriches. He wrestled in college and wrote sports stories for the student newspaper.
Mr.Baker adds quotes from both the supporters and non supporters like Dick Dadey, the executive director of Citizens Union, an advocacy group that supports the recent change and add some details with numbers of officers that couldn't be charge before the change and not being able to receive any punishment.
In this article we learn on how speaking up for a change can not only benefit us but also our future generation by keeping the officers in check and also inspire other communities and citizens to become more of an engage citizen and take a role in their local communities.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/05/nyregion/volunteers-and-donations-flock-to-areas-affected-by-hurricane-sandy.html?_r=0
The article I read is” Volunteers Flock to Disaster Areas, Overwhelming City Relief Centers” by Catherine Rampell. This article revolves around Hurricane Sandy and how worried new yorkers who were not affected but “ found it difficult to sit still as images of homeless and desolate city residents filled their television screen”. Hundreds of people showing up eager to volunteer and help those afflicted by the superstorm. This article is relevant to the class reading“Citizenship And the Transformation of American Society” because both talk about what it means to be good citizen, which the text says this generation believes it to be as “ living with engaged citizenship and involvement in the city. This article proves this as many people are proving they are good citizens by giving their time and money to those afflicted by Sandy. This article is credible because it is from the New York Times. The new York Times is an american newspaper founded in 1851 and is considered america’s most popular news site , receiving more than 30 million viewers a month. This article is also credible because it is from Catherine Rampell, a graduate from Princeton University and is the founding editor of the Economix blog.because Rampell uses specific evidence to prove that this generation of people believe that it is their responsibility to help those if they can. Rampell uses a quote by a volunteer that shows dedication and selflessness that this generation believes to count as being a good citizen. “This is my city and I want to do something to help it,” said Esther Pan Sloane, of Roosevelt Island, who drove a carload of supplies from Jackson Heights to a post office on Rockaway Beach where food and clothing were being handed out.” Another example of evidence that exemplify that this generation of people help is through corporations like Pepsi. PepsiCo donated five trailer truck loads of beverages and three trailer truck loads of snacks, and has committed to providing about 22 more over the next week. The article “Volunteers Flock to Disaster Areas, Overwhelming City Relief Centers” and the class reading “Citizenship And the Transformation of American Society” revolve around the theme of unity and helping each other. The article revolves around new york city uniting as a people and coming together to help those affected by the super storm sunday. The class reading revolves around current generations and what they believe it is to be a good citizen, “living with engaged citizenship and involvement in the city.”
The article I found is called “Young Americans less interested in the environment than previous generations” by Martha Irvine. It talks about how the younger generation has become less involved in the environment. The article focused a lot on the difference betweens todays generation of youth and the older generations from the past.
ReplyDeleteThis reading connects to this weeks topic in the reading of “Citizenship and the Transformation Of American Society”. This reading talks about how the American Democracy is at risk, because Americans are getting less and less involved in Politics. This is shown when Irvine says ”...today’s young Americans are less interested in the environment and in conserving resources — and often less civic-minded overall — than their elders were when they were young.” This shows that the newer generation is less interested and therefore less involved in the environment than the older generation. Dalton agrees with the theory of Americans giving up on civic life when he says, “Americans have turned away from Politics and the public sphere in large numbers.” These two articles are similar because they both talk about how the younger generations are getting less involved in the important stuff like politics and environment. The younger generation is really important because they if they become less involved in the important issues of our community then it leads the example to new generation to become even less involved which will lead to community to be in a crisis.
This article is credible because it comes from The Washington Post. The Washington Post has received 47 Pulitzer, 18 Nieman Fellowship awards, and 368 White House News Photographers Association Awards. The author, Martha Irvine is a Chicago based writer who closely works with young adults and teens. Irvine provides evidence by focusing on the three types of young generations which are baby boomers, Generation X and Millennials. Millennials also were the least likely to say they had made an effort to conserve electricity and fuel used to heat their homes.”The author also notes that these statistics were taken before the Country’s most recent recession hit.
The article that I have read was called "Grassroots Groups Have Taken Over Sandy Relief." This article was about the community of people that live in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn and how they were affected by the aftermath of Super-Storm Sandy. Gerritsen Beach was declared as a Zone B location. This declaration led many residents to remain at home during the storm. The effects of the storm had left the residents swimming in the flooded waters of Sandy to escape the monstrosity. After the flooding, FEMA was contacted, but did nothing to help. Left out to dry, the people of Gerritsen Beach teamed up together "...acting as [their] own little city" to help each other with the supplies they had. Soon after, volunteers from outside Gerritsen Beach came to help as well. The article that I chose for this week connects to The Good Citizen because the way that Gerritsen Beach came together at a time of need and shared the little that they had with each other shows the good citizens they are, as well as the volunteers from outside Gerritsen Beach. The article that I found this week is credible because the website, bkbureau.org is a non-profit news organization that was first launched in 2012. This news organization publishes investigative journalism on issues going currently going on in Brooklyn and encourages civic engagement. The author, Neil deMause, has been working as a Manhattan/Brooklyn based writer, covering stories on social policy issues. deMause also contributes to other media outlets such as CNNMoney.com, Extra!, Village Voice and is owner of his own website.. deMause was also honored with the Project Censored Award. Together these two articles share the same idea; becoming a good citizen means engaging in your community."The Good Citizen" stated "...[Good citizens] are willing to contribute their time and effort to make a difference." "Greenroots Group Take Over Sandy Relief" stated "Gerritsen residents began the process of sifting through their possessions to find what was salvageable, the relief effort got underway." The people of Gerritsen Beach united together to help one another when most in need.
ReplyDeleteThe article I read was "Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities" by the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Service. This article is the rules and regulation a new comer to America must follow or respect. It talks about the right a citizen has in America like expressing one self and freedom to pursue “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” It also talks about the responsibility a U.S citizen must take on like obeying federal, state, and local laws and supporting and defending the Constitution.
ReplyDeleteThis text relates to " Good Citizen" by Russell J. Dalton because they both talk about what it takes to be a good citizen. They differentiate because the article "Citizenship Rights and Responsibility" is more of a technical way of being a "good" citizen and the text "Good Citizen" talks about the morality and social consciousness of being a "good citizen". But the main idea is how to be a conscious and reliable citizen.
The text I found is credible because it the U.S Citizenship and Immigration Service. It is an actual place where people receive their citizenship and are allow to enter the United States of America. It is a component of the United States Department of Homeland Security. It performs many administrative functions formerly carried out by the former United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), which was part of the Department of Justice. The stated priorities of the USCIS are to promote national security, to eliminate immigration case backlogs, and to improve customer services.
Being a conscious citizen mean being involve in anything that affect you or anything around you. For example in the "Good Citizen" text it talks about a young man who is very socially aware but doesn't vote saying " Like many of his fellow students, he had not voted in the last election (which was his first opportunity to vote)." Those college students mentioned in the beginning of the text are socially conscious but not political conscious which makes them not conscious overall. In order to be conscious you must part take in everything that affects you. A political vote is one of those things. A political vote is a way to make your voice be heard and not voting is making them metaphorically silent in the world of politic. You help all you want but If you don't say what you want and need the true help is not going to be present and the problem is not going to truly get resolved.
